Trump Woos the Moms for Liberty

Trump Woos the Moms for Liberty

Updated at 5:55 p.m. ET on August 31, 2024 Donald Trump’s appearance last night at Moms for Liberty’s annual gathering was intended as a classic campaign stop—a chance for the candidate to preen in front of a friendly audience. And this audience certainly was friendly. At this week’s “Joyful Warriors” summit in Washington, D.C., members of the three-year-old conservative organization attended a seminar on the history of Marxism and a session on abolishing the Department of Education—led by a contributor to the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025. They packed their tote bags full of pamphlets about “wokecraft” and the “toxic culture” in public schools. They wore bejeweled TRUMP hats and glittering American-flag pins. They stood in awe of a painting depicting Kamala Harris devouring the bloody corpse of a bald eagle. But right now, both Trump and Moms for Liberty are struggling to be relevant and relatable to American women. “The more popular you get, the devil will work harder on you,” Jessica Caiazzo, a member from Oahu, Hawaii, told me yesterday with a shrug, when …

After success of BTS and Parasite, South Korea woos digital nomads | Technology

Seoul, South Korea – Riding the wave of enthusiasm for all things Korean, South Korea has in recent years become one of Asia’s most popular tourist destinations. Now, the cultural juggernaut known for the K-pop band BTS, the movie Parasite and Korean BBQ and kimchi is setting its sights on cornering the market for a new kind of traveller: the digital nomad. In January, the South Korean government launched its “workation” visa, joining the global trend of countries seeking an economic boost by tapping into the growing pool of transient remote workers. Marco, a software engineer from Switzerland who has been working remotely in South Korea for more than a year, is among those planning to apply for the visa after falling in love with the country’s culture and food. “For a lot of things, I have to rely on friends to help me out, which constantly makes you feel left out,” Marco, who asked to use only his first name, told Al Jazeera. Without longer-term residency, Marco must make regular visa runs and cannot …

Kari Lake woos D.C. lobbyists as Arizona Senate race heats up

Kari Lake woos D.C. lobbyists as Arizona Senate race heats up

Arizona Republican Senate Candidate Kari Lake speaks with reporters after leaving the office of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Capitol Hill on March, 6 2024 in Washington, DC.  Kent Nishimura | Getty Images Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake has been quietly meeting with lobbyists and raising money in Washington in recent weeks, according to people familiar with the matter. Lake has built her political brand around her willingness to buck the D.C. establishment wing of the GOP. On Tuesday, Lake met with about a dozen lobbyists in the nation’s capital, and the following day she attended a campaign fundraiser that was heavy with D.C. hired guns. Lake also met separately with a top GOP lobbyist recently to strategize how to get her in front of even more industry players, according to sources familiar with the meeting. Like others in this story, they were granted anonymity to describe private events. The Arizona Senate race is poised to be one of the most competitive and high profile contests in the nation this fall. President …

‘Big bullies’: Maldives turns away from India as calculating China woos it with aid | Maldives

Since Mohamed Muizzu was elected president of the Maldives in September, a wave of anti-India sentiment has swept the country. This week, it was made clear to New Delhi exactly where his government’s allegiances now lie. “There will be no Indian troops in the country come 10 May. Not in uniform and not in civilian clothing. The Indian military will not be residing in this country in any form of clothing. I state this with confidence,” Muizzu said in a public address on Tuesday. A few days earlier, the two neighbouring countries had got into a spat after Muizzu made a thinly veiled reference to India as a “bully” of smaller countries in the region. In response, India’s minister of external affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, said that “big bullies don’t provide $4.5bn aid”, in apparent reference to the large sums the Maldives still accepts from India. In notable contrast, Muizzu’s government this week announced an agreement with China to receive free “military assistance” from Beijing, and China also gave the country 12 ambulances. Though the Maldives …

Trump woos voters in Virginia as Super Tuesday inches closer: Watch live

Former President Trump, the current GOP front-runner in the race for the White House, is slated to make a campaign stop in Richmond, Va., Saturday, to bring in support from the state ahead of its Super Tuesday primary. Trump leads his only remaining primary challenger, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, in Virginia by more than 60 points — 77.5 percent to 17.2 percent — according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s polling index. The former president, who also spoke at a “Get Out the Vote” rally in Greensboro, N.C., earlier Saturday, is likely reeling from wins in the Missouri caucuses and Michigan GOP convention. More than a dozen states, including Virginia and North Carolina, will hold presidential nominating contests on Super Tuesday — just a few days away on March 5 — a critical milestone in the 2024 race.  Trump is expected to speak in Virginia 6 p.m. EST. Farmer Rish! woos the NFU conference in full-on panic to secure rural vote | John Crace

Farmer Rish! woos the NFU conference in full-on panic to secure rural vote | John Crace

Enter Farmer Rish!. You might have thought Rishi Sunak was a typical member of the globalist metrosexual elite. Sharp suits and sharper elbows as he rode the Goldman Sachs gravy train to bet against sterling. A man whose main connection to the countryside was as a view to be enjoyed from the privacy of his own helicopter. But no. It turns out that the prime minister is a man hewn from the soil. A sheep whisperer whose own circadian rhythms are in tune with the natural world. A politician who likes nothing more than to escape the grime of Westminster infighting to gaze at the unusable flooded fields that surround his constituency home while relaxing in his heated swimming pool. On Tuesday, Sunak became the first prime minister to address the National Farmers’ Union conference since 2008. And only a cynic could possibly imagine it had anything to do with the Conservatives having realised their days of taking the rural vote for granted were long gone. Not to put too fine a point on it, …

The village has the most aged population in Japan, with two-thirds of residents over age 65. Anthony Kuhn/NPR NANMOKU, Japan — This village sits along a river running through the mountains, surrounded by forests of cedar and bamboo. The once-thriving hamlet was known for its silk, timber and a starchy root called konjac. Today, it is Japan’s most aged village, with two-thirds of residents over age 65. Many of the settlement’s buildings are dilapidated or abandoned, and there’s little new construction. Nanmoku’s population has fallen from 11,000 in 1955 to about 1,500 today, according to official town hall figures. At that rate of decline, nobody could be left in a little over a decade. The village is on the leading edge of Japan’s rural depopulation, a trend …

Haley Woos Independents in Final New Hampshire Push Against Trump

Haley Woos Independents in Final New Hampshire Push Against Trump

By Gram Slattery and James Oliphant PORTSMOUTH/KEENE, New Hampshire (Reuters) – Tom Mita, a 45-year-old non-profit worker in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is not registered with a political party. That makes him the perfect target for Nikki Haley, who needs independent voters for a chance to prevail in this pivotal primary state. Mita is thinking about voting for Haley, he told a pair of door knockers who were canvassing on behalf of the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations outside his suburban home on Saturday, but he isn’t completely sold on her candidacy. He wants Haley, who has so far spared Donald Trump from some lines of attack, to go after him more aggressively. He considers Trump a threat to democracy for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democratic President Joe Biden. If Haley pulls her punches, he may vote in the Democratic primary instead. “It’s really about stopping Trump,” said Mita, standing outside his door, hands stuffed in his pockets, on a 19-degree Fahrenheit day. “Best scenario would be if she comes …

Scotland’s ruling SNP woos tycoon who shunned Nicola Sturgeon – POLITICO

Scotland’s ruling SNP woos tycoon who shunned Nicola Sturgeon – POLITICO

LONDON — The Scottish government asked a controversial business chief who shunned Nicola Sturgeon to help arrange a glitzy industry dinner at a five-star hotel. Brian Souter, a socially conservative entrepreneur who has challenged LGBTQ+ equalities law in Scotland, broke away from the Scottish National Party during Sturgeon’s time at the top of the country’s ruling party. But documents released to POLITICO under freedom of information law show Souter has been extensively courted by aides to Sturgeon’s successor Humza Yousaf, who enlisted Souter to help organize the dinner meant to repair ties between government and business. The newly disclosed emails show the Scottish first minister’s senior advisers liaised with Souter when arranging the gathering in Edinburgh last summer. Souter agreed to help “nudge” other business figures to attend. It’s the latest twist in a storied history for the SNP and Souter. Formerly the party’s largest donor, Souter stopped donating altogether when Sturgeon replaced Alex Salmond at the helm of the party in 2014. He never gave a public reason for his lack of financial support …

Musk woos ad giants in Paris to fix Twitter’s woes

Musk woos ad giants in Paris to fix Twitter’s woes

In a steaming-hot, packed, VivaTech hall in Paris today, Twitter owner Elon Musk waxed lyrical on his various accomplishments, but demured over some of the bigger questions hanging over his various companies. After walking on stage and joking that he might be a “hologram or an android”, Musk also quipped that Twitter was “expensive” and “if I’m so smart, why did I pay so much for Twitter?!” Image Credits: Mike Butcher The light-hearted but also soft-soaping interview that started as a fireside with Publicis chairman Maurice Levy saw Musk switch from jokes about himself to hypothetical questions about the future of humanity to defensive comments about how his various companies are doing. Some of it was just classic Elon facetiousness. “I’m definitely not evil,” he said, with a questioning wrinkle of his eyebrows. Speaking about Tesla, he said the company still had a lot to do for its “core” mission: “The Tesla mission, we’ve made a lot of progress, but it’s a lot more ahead than it was. SpaceX has a big goal to make …
