Man arrested over A61 crash that killed six – as police appeal for witnesses who saw Porsche | UK News

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving over a crash that killed six people, including two children. The crash between a Ford Focus carrying a family and a motorbike with a husband and wife riding it happened on the A61 between Wakefield and Barnsley just before 4pm on Sunday. Police have appealed for anyone who saw a grey coloured Porsche 911 in the area around the time of the collision to come forward. Shane Roller, 33, his 30-year-old partner Shannen Morgan and their daughters Rubie and Lillie Morgan-Roller, aged nine and four, were killed in the crash. A GoFundMe page set up for their surviving daughter, who is understood not to have been with them at the time, reached more than £340,000 by Wednesday afternoon. The page, set up by family friend Paul Hepple, said the 11-year-old had “lost her whole world in an instant” and that he had been looking after her since the tragedy. But Mr Hepple said she is going to be staying with her “amazing, …

Jurors ask to rehear testimony from key witnesses in Trump hush money trial

Jurors ask to rehear testimony from key witnesses in Trump hush money trial

The jury in Donald Trump’s hush money trial ended its first day of deliberations without a verdict Wednesday but asked to rehear testimony from key witnesses about the alleged hush money scheme at the heart of the history-making case. The 12-person jury was sent home around 4 p.m. after about 4 1/2 hours of deliberations. The process is to resume Thursday, when jurors are expected to rehear the requested testimony and at least part of the judge’s legal instructions meant to guide them on the law. The notes sent to the judge with the requests were the first burst of communication with the court after the panel of seven men and five women was sent to a private room just before 11:30 a.m. to begin weighing a verdict. “It is not my responsibility to judge the evidence here. It is yours,” Judge Juan M. Merchan told jurors before dispatching them to begin deliberations, reminding them of their vow during the selection process to judge the case fairly and impartially. It’s unclear how long the deliberations …

Close to being smoking guns”: Legal experts say new Trump trial documents are the “star witnesses

On the opening day of Donald Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan, the former president’s lead defense counsel asked jurors to use their common sense – to actually reflect on the prosecution’s argument that an infamous cheapskate would not only pay off an adult film star, spending $130,000 to buy her silence about a one-night stand that he says never happened, but dole out an additional $300,000 or so to compensate Michael Cohen, is former fixer, for making a wire transfer? “Think for a moment,” Todd Blanche instructed the 12 people who will decide if Trump, charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records, engaged in a conspiracy to hide the hush payment and break campaign finance laws. “Would a frugal businessman,” Blanche asked, “would a man who pinches pennies, repay a $130,000 debt to the tune of $420,000?” On Monday, day 12 of the trial, prosecutors introduced a document that appears to succinctly answer that question: yes. The testimony from current and former accountants at the Trump Organization may not have had the drama of …

“Shaking his head”: Trump “in disbelief” as lawyer admits he went out of his way to bash witnesses

A lawyer for former President Donald Trump insisted at a contempt hearing Thursday that his client’s comments on jurors and witnesses do not run afoul of a gag order, even as he conceded that the Republican candidate is not merely responding to attacks but actively seeking out opportunities to spout off on his trial. Prosecutors accuse Trump of violating the gag order in his Manhattan criminal case an additional four times, citing his praise of David Pecker, former publisher of the National Enquirer, as a “nice guy” and his attack on jurors as being “95 percent Democrats” rapidly picked from “a purely Democrat area.” Following a hearing last month, Trump also exited the courtroom, where he’s being tried on charges of falsifying business records to cover up hush payments, and approached reporters to share an attack on Michael Cohen, his former fixer. “When are they going to look at all the lies Cohen did in the last trial,” Trump said. Judge Juan Merchan, who fined the former president $9,000 earlier in the week for previous …

New witnesses and contact info for Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal

Two new witnesses took the stand Friday after four days of testimony from former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker in former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial. Trump’s longtime assistant, Rhona Graff, told the court that his contact list included information for Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, who have both claimed they had affairs with the former president in 2006. Trump has denied their claims. Graff’s testimony was followed by Gary Farro, a bank executive who said he helped former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen set up a bank account for the shell company he used to pay Daniels. Here’s what you missed on Day 8 of the trial: Pecker cross-examined For his fourth day on the stand, Pecker faced a rapid fire cross-examination by Trump attorney Emil Bove. The defense attempted to pierce Pecker’s credibility as a witness by countering the narrative woven by prosecutors earlier in the week about an alleged scheme by Trump to influence the 2016 presidential election. A rapt jury took notes and watched as Pecker answered questions about his recollection of …

20 dead after ferry sinks in Central African Republic, witnesses say

Bangui, Central African Republic —  At least 20 people have drowned in Central African Republic after a ferry sank while carrying passengers on a river, witnesses said Saturday. The wooden ferry was carrying more than 300 people to a funeral over the Mpoko River in the capital, Bangui, on Friday when it started to collapse, witnesses told The Associated Press on Saturday. Local boat pilots and fishermen were the first to react and rescued victims and collected bodies from the river before the emergency services arrived. One fisherman who was involved in the rescue, Adrien Mossamo, said that at least 20 bodies were found while waiting for the military to arrive. “It’s a horrible day,” he said. The death toll is rising as the military takes over the search, officials at Bangui University Hospital Center said. The exact number of deaths is currently unknown, and the government didn’t comment. Civil society groups and local political parties sent their condolences in social media posts and called for an inquest into the sinking. Source link

Who is Stormy Daniels, one of the key witnesses in Trump’s criminal trial?

Stormy Daniels in Cambridge, UK, June 2022. Her truth In the US, there is no longer any need to introduce Stormy Daniels, who is at the heart of the criminal trial that opened on Monday, April 15 in New York against former US president Donald Trump. The case dates back to 2018 when the Wall Street Journal revealed that the billionaire’s lawyer paid the pornographic film actress $130,000 (around €122,000) in the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign to buy her silence regarding a sexual relationship she claims to have had with Trump in 2006, which the latter denies. The Republican presidential candidate has pleaded not guilty. He is accused of having falsified Trump Organization accounting documents, specifically by misrepresenting the money spent to buy the actress’s silence as campaign expenses. “He’s attacked witnesses”: Prosecutors want to make Trump delete some of his Truth Social posts

Prosecutors in former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial are seeking to fine the Republican defendant $1,000 each for three Truth Social posts he fired off within the last week, arguing that they violate a gag order. Last month prosecutors successfully obtained an order that prohibits Trump from attacking potential witnesses, jurors, court staff, and relatives of Judge Juan Merchan and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. As PBS reported, prosecutors on Monday singled out Truth Social posts that called Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels — both key prosecution witnesses —“two sleaze bags who have, with their lies and misrepresentations, cost our Country dearly!” Prosecutors are asking Merchan to not only fine the former president but order him to take down the posts. “The defendant has demonstrated his willingness to flout the order. He’s attacked witnesses in the case,” said prosecutor Christopher Conroy, who filed the official motion. While he read the posts, reporters with CNN observed Trump leaning forward with his elbows on the table. Trump’s lawyers argued that the posts did not violate the …
