Why Colorectal Doctors Would Never Use Wet Wipes

Why Colorectal Doctors Would Never Use Wet Wipes

We’ve all been told to wipe from front to back and use a squatty potty at some point in our lives. We’ve heard this advice for a good reason ― because it works. On the other hand, when it comes to what not to do in the bathroom, some colorectal and gastrointestinal doctors have one product they don’t always recommend: wet wipes. This is not to say that every doctor is totally against using them. However, there are some potential drawbacks (aside from future plumbing issues) you’ll want to consider before reaching for one on your next trip to the bathroom. Here’s what to know: Wet wipes can cause some irritation and other issues post-toilet Although wet wipes are marketed to provide a better clean down there, especially after going No. 2, you’re generally not supposed to wipe with wet wipes as they can actually be more harmful than helpful. “The use of wet wipes is a common cause of perianal dermatitis (a rash around your butthole),” said Dr. Alex Elias, a board-certified female colorectal …

UK announces ban on sale of wet wipes containing plastic to tackle pollution | Politics | News

The UK is set to ban the sale of wet wipes containing plastic to help protect the environment. Legislation will be introduced later this year to help prevent damaging plastic pollution and clean up waterways. Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said: “Wet wipes containing plastic are polluting our waterways and causing microplastics to enter the environment. “Defra will introduce legislation before the summer recess to crack down on this unnecessary source of pollution, following our successful single-use carrier bag charge and ban on microbeads in personal care products. “I have been clear that a step change is needed to protect our waterways from pollution. “The ban builds on a raft of actions already taken to protect our waterways and hold water companies accountable – including accelerating investment, putting water company fines back into the environment and quadrupling the number of inspections of water company sites.” Defra plans to bring forward the legislation for English before the summer, with Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales following by the autumn. Wet wipes containing plastic to be banned from sale in UK | UK News

Wet wipes containing plastic will be banned from being sold in the UK, with legislation expected to be announced by Environment Secretary Steve Barclay today. The government is planning to introduce the legislation before parliament’s summer recess begins in July. The new law will make it illegal to sell wet wipes containing plastic in England, before being rolled out to cover the rest of the UK in autumn. Discarded wet wipes frequently litter Britain’s beaches and eventually break down into microplastics, which contribute to water pollution and damage ecosystems. Numerous retailers – including Boots, Aldi and Tesco – have already moved to ban them from their shelves. Mr Barclay has said the ban “builds on a raft of actions already taken to protect our waterways and hold water companies accountable”. The other actions include “accelerating investment, putting water company fines back into the environment and quadrupling the number of inspections of water company sites”, he said. However, Labour has said the legislation does not go far enough and is calling for “a full ban on …

Bob Marley One Love Box Office Wipes Out Madame Web With Huge $51M

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love delivered a huge $50 million-plus domestic opening over the six-day Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day corridor, enough to crush Madame Web‘s $25.8 million start, a record worst for Sony’s superhero adventures. Estimates show One Love racking in an estimated $51.1 million for the six days domestically, including $33.2 million for the four-day Presidents Day weekend and a record $14 million on Valentine’s Day (rival studios say the decision to go out on sweetheart’s day day was a smart choice in building momentum). The movie’s weekend debut is on par with the starts of such musical biopics as Rocketman or Elvis, and did almost double the business it was tracking to do. (Grosses could shift once weekend actuals are issued Tuesday morning following the Monday holiday.) Overseas, One Love earned an impressive $29 million for a global launch of $80 million against a $70 million budget. The film opened at No. 1 in 13 markets and set new opening day records for a music biopic in the U.K., France and other territories. In …

No wet wipes should be flushed down the loo after all, water industry says | Climate News

Eco-friendly wet wipes should not be branded okay to flush down the toilet after all, Britain’s water industry has said. Water UK is dropping its “Fine to Flush” branding on hygiene wipes, admitting customers were confused about what should or should not go down the loo. The certification scheme assessed baby wipes, which contain plastic, to see how well they broke down in sewers, deeming those that met the test “Fine to Flush”. It only applied to baby wipes and other products used in lieu of toilet roll, but not to things like make-up or cleaning wipes. ‘Fatberg’ threat But between 2.1-2.9 billion wet wipes end up in Britain’s waterways each year, according to the environment department, clogging up sewers and creating “massive wet-wipe reefs” in waterways, found one study. The 2020 study found even “flushable” wipes were forming “fatbergs” – chunks of solids like wipes plus grease and fats that block pipes and can cause flooding in homes and streets. Last year, then Environment Secretary Therese Coffey told producers that labels saying “flushable” or …

Airstrike From Israeli Hostage Rescue Wipes Out Entire Palestinian Family in Gaza Border Town

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Ibrahim Hasouna trudged over the rubble of the destroyed house, pointing out where family moments had taken place — where his mother and sister-in-law used to sleep, where he played with his 5-year-old nieces, where he helped his 1-year-old nephew take his first steps. His entire family was now dead — his parents, his two brothers, and the wife and three children of one of those brothers. The house was reduced to rubble on top of them in the barrage of airstrikes that Israeli warplanes inflicted across Rafah before dawn Monday as cover for troops rescuing two hostages elsewhere in the city on the southern Gaza border. At least 74 Palestinians were killed in the bombardment, which flattened large swaths of buildings and tents sheltering families who had fled to Rafah from across Gaza. Among the dead were 27 children and 22 women, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, whose researchers compiled the list from Rafah hospitals. The Israeli offensive has taken a heavy toll on women and …

Use Wet Wipes? We’ve Got Grim Health News For You

You’ve probably heard that few things in life are certain except death and taxes, but we’d like to add something else to the list: cleaning up in the bathroom. So, since we have to do it, what’s the best technique? The preferred method of wiping “is not wiping,” nationally renowned anal surgeon Dr. Evan Goldstein told us — Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, co-hosts of HuffPost’s “Am I Doing It Wrong?” podcast — when we recently chatted with him. “When you’re looking at someone’s [anus], to the left and the right are these wrinkles ― it’s like an accordion. It opens. It closes,” said Goldstein, who is also the CEO and founder of Bespoke Surgical. “The front and the back ― towards the vagina, towards the penis and testicle area, or the tailbone, the skin there is not wrinkled. It’s very thin. When we wipe, where do we wipe? Usually front to back — thin skin! We all wipe so much, so what happens over time? People tear the skin. It gets irritated. It gets …
