An Introduction to The Garden of Earthly Delights & Hieronymus Bosch’s Wildly Creative Vision

Hieronymus Bosch’s masterpiece of grotesquerie, The Garden of Earthly Delights, contains a young God, Adam and Eve, oversized fruits and musical instruments, owls, tortured sinners, something called a “tree man” whose body contains an entire tavern, a defecating avian devil eating a human being, and “frolicking, oblivious figures engaged in all sorts of carnal pleasures,” as art historian Beth Harris puts it in the new Smarthistory video above. Throughout its fifteen minutes, she and her colleague Steven Zucker explain as much as possible of this jam-packed triptych — not that even a lifetime would be long enough to understand it fully. “Bosch confounds our ability to even talk about what we see,” says Harris. “His imagination has run wild. He’s just invented so many things here that we could never even have thought about in our wildest imaginations.” Zucker cites one art-history theory that this triptych represents Bosch’s attempt to “elevate the visual arts to the level of creativity that was permitted in literature.” Even in Bosch’s late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, writers had …

Earth will look wildly different in millions of years. Take a look.

Earth will look wildly different in millions of years. Take a look.

The ground is moving. It’s a creeping movement, but a momentous one. Some 200 million years ago, a single, extraordinary supercontinent called Pangea dominated Earth. Ultimately, landmasses ruptured and pulled apart, creating the world we see today. Yet the continents never ceased drifting. And in some 250 million years’ time, computer simulations suggest that a supercontinent may again prevail. “It might end up looking a lot like Pangea did when the dinosaurs were roaming around,” Hannah Davies, a geologist at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences who researches future continental change, told Mashable. SEE ALSO: What will happen when the next supervolcano erupts, according to NASA While it’s certain the continents have migrated and continue to migrate — owing to a preponderance of evidence from rocks, fossils, the fit and shape of our continents, and beyond — it’s still uncertain how, exactly, such massive geological change will play out in the distant future. Yet visualizations made possible with modern computing have given scientists an improved view of our planet’s geologic future. As we learn …

13 Tiny Hacks That Trick You Into Becoming Wildly Confident

13 Tiny Hacks That Trick You Into Becoming Wildly Confident

I struggled with understanding confidence for years, let alone having it. It took me many years of awkward interactions and self-doubt to eventually sprout a pair of … wings. I learned that confidence is unearthed. We all have it when we’re relaxed. But there are certain things we can do to hack our bodies and minds to trigger this feeling of confidence. Here are 14 tiny hacks that trick you into becoming wildly confident: 1. Walk and sit with a fraction more pride in your posture. Studies show that posture can affect our physical chemistry and sense of self. 2. Commit to rising above the masses. The masses are average for a reason. And they’re mostly miserable. Set a high target and then take steps to literally become the kind of person you need to be to live that goal. Your goals are for the here and now, not tomorrow. 3. Send a friend a funny audio message. Man, I can’t tell you how much my silly antics with audio lifts me. I’m just being …

Mick Jagger’s son Lucas has the most hilarious response to his dad wildly dancing in a bar

Mick Jagger’s son Lucas has the most hilarious response to his dad wildly dancing in a bar

Mick Jagger, the legendary Rolling Stones frontman, has proven that even rock stars aren’t immune to a bit of parental embarrassment.  At 80, he recently took to Instagram to share a video of himself letting loose, dancing energetically to a live band’s music.  The video showcases Mick’s playful side, complete with exaggerated, goofy facial expressions and lively dance moves that include a dramatic bend to the floor and an impish crotch grab, all while looking directly into the camera. Captioning the clip with a nod to Maroon 5’s hit Moves Like Jagger, Mick humorously wrote, “Moves like who!”  This prompted a playful reaction from his son, Lucas Maurice Morad-Jagger, 24, who commented, “Dadda WHO PUT U UP TO THis,” showcasing the light-hearted family dynamics.  Mick shares Lucas with Brazilian model Luciana Gimenez Morad, with whom he welcomed his son on May 17, 1999. Mick’s illustrious life extends beyond the stage; he is a father to eight children and a great-grandfather.  © GettyRolling Stones, circa 1960. ‘Wildly irresponsible’ Russia ‘jams signals’ on RAF plane carrying defence secretary | UK News

Russia is believed to have jammed the satellite signal on an RAF plane taking Defence Secretary Grant Shapps back to the UK from Poland. The GPS signal was interfered with for about 30 minutes while the jet flew near the Russian territory of Kaliningrad on Wednesday, according to a report in The Times. Mobile phones could not connect to the internet and the aircraft, a Dassault 900LX Falcon jet, had to use alternative methods to determine its location. Mr Shapps, who was travelling with his staff and several journalists, was returning from a military training site in Orzysz, Poland, where he had watched hundreds of troops participate in Steadfast Defender, the biggest NATO exercise since the Cold War. Experts told The Times it was not clear whether Mr Shapps was targeted but the plane’s flight path could be seen on aircraft tracking websites. 9 Tiny Energy Hacks To Steal From Wildly Productive People

9 Tiny Energy Hacks To Steal From Wildly Productive People

The tiniest things can create significant changes. The energy needed to be productive can come from a small shift or an opening up of energy channels, which can take seconds. Here are 9 tiny energy hacks to steal from wildly energetic people: 1. Laugh therapy Taking everything seriously and being all moody and heavy as you go through your day — I guarantee — is messing up your productivity. Why? Because ‘seriousness’ is a low-consciousness frequency. It is low energy. Humor and laughter lift us quickly. It’s like shocking our system into operating at a higher level. Laugh at some comedy on YouTube before you crack into some work, or cackle like a crazed witch, allow your belly to loosen and thank me later. RELATED: 15 Habits Of Highly Productive People 2. Scribble crap on paper While everyone else is sweating over how ‘unproductive’ they’re being, forcing themselves to do things they aren’t feeling, you’re a little different. You’re here with a pen, scribbling on paper. Not trying anything, having fun. In this loose, free-flowing state, ideas …

They were killed in the London Bridge terror attack, seconds apart. So why did their families get wildly different payouts? | London Bridge attack 2017

Sara Zelenak was brutally unlucky. Her parents, Mark and Julie, can reel off all the different reasons why she shouldn’t have been walking down the pavement at the junction of London Bridge and Borough High Street 19 seconds after 10.07pm on 3 June 2017. “She was never going to be in London,” Mark says, wide-eyed. “She was going to be an au pair in Milan.” Ten days before she was supposed to leave her home in Brisbane, the job got cancelled. “But she was able to pick up something in London, so that’s where she went.” Sara loved London: the fashion, the nightlife, even the cold. She was 21 and the world was her oyster. “She came completely out of her shell,” Julie tells me. “You could see her change in three months. She blossomed.” On that Saturday in June, Sara was meant to be at home in London’s Victoria, with the kids she au paired, Mark says. “But the grandma said, ‘I’m going to have the children tonight, so you can have the night …
