Documents submitted to the Infected Blood Inquiry reveal the blood service in the UK was taking donations from British prisons up until the late 1980s, despite warnings to end the practice. It is evidence of how unsafe, by today’s standards, the UK blood supply was until the early 1990s when testing for life-threatening viruses like hepatitis C and HIV became available. Much of the inquiry has focused on haemophiliacs, the group harmed most in the infection scandal due to blood products imported from the US made from contaminated blood from paying donors including those in jail. But the vast majority of people infected with hepatitis C in the UK acquired their infection via blood transfusions in the NHS for things like routine surgery, cancer treatment or following childbirth. Blood given to this silent majority in the infected blood scandal was sourced almost exclusively from donors in Britain. “I felt so guilty I passed it on,” says Daphne Whitehorn. Thunderstorm warnings have been issued for large parts of the country, lasting from lunchtime until Monday night. The Met Office says thunder and heavy downpours could cause flooding and travel problems. Southeast England – including Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and south London – could be affected from noon, says the forecaster. The Met Office has issued two weather warnings for thunderstorms later today. The yellow weather warnings cover London, much of England’s south, southwest and southeast, as well as Cardiff and southern Wales. Heavy rain is expected, with a chance of thunderstorms, according to the first of the warnings, which covers Wales and large parts of southwest England between 8pm tonight and 8am tomorrow. Thunderstorms are likely later this evening and overnight in London, Brighton, Oxford and other areas covered by the second warning, which comes into effect at 11pm tonight and lasts until 6am tomorrow. SEVERE HEATWAVES Global temperatures hit record highs last year and the UN’s World Meteorological Organization said Asia was warming at a particularly rapid pace, with the impact of heatwaves in the region becoming more severe. The WMO’s State of the Climate in Asia 2023 report found Asia was warming faster than the global average, with temperatures last year nearly 2 degrees Celsius above the 1961 to 1990 average. “Many countries in the region experienced their hottest year on record in 2023, along with a barrage of extreme conditions, from droughts and heatwaves to floods and storms,” said WMO chief Celeste Saulo, who described the report as “sobering”. Around this time just one week ago, iPhone users in 92 counties received a bizarre notification on their device. “Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID,” read the notification. “This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although it’s never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning — please take it seriously.” Apple posted an announcement on its website giving basic details for why the company would generally send out a notification warning like this. However, the company has been relatively mum on the situation since. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip —  The Israeli military renewed warnings on Monday for Palestinians in Gaza not to return to the embattled territory’s north, a day after Gaza hospital officials said five people were killed as throngs of displaced residents tried to reach their homes in the war-torn area. Northern Gaza was an early target of Israel’s war against Hamas, and vast parts of it have been flattened, forcing much of the area’s population to flee south.
