Just over six months after Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Apple abandoned its plans to release an electric vehicle, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) canceled Apple’s autonomous vehicle testing permit, according to macReports. The report states that the DMV received confirmation from Apple to cancel the permit on September 25, and the permit became canceled as of September 27. While this decision is not surprising given Gurman’s reporting earlier this year, this is effectively the final nail in the coffin for Apple’s decade-long electric vehicle project. The permit allowed Apple to test a self-driving vehicle with a safety driver on any public road within California. Apple received the permit in 2017, and macReports said that it would have been active until April 30, 2025 had it not been canceled. Apple was using leased Lexus SUVs equipped with an array of sensors and cameras to test various autonomous driving technologies on California streets. Washington —  SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket can return to flight for a mission planned for Monday to launch the European Space Agency’s Hera spacecraft from Florida, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday. Elon Musk’s company, which has engaged in a public quarrel with the FAA in recent weeks, said Sunday it is planning the liftoff for 10:52 a.m. ET (1452 GMT) from Cape Canaveral. “The SpaceX Falcon 9 vehicle is authorized to return to flight only for the planned Hera mission scheduled to launch on Oct. 7 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida,” the FAA said Sunday. While governments push electric vehicles on their citizens, with some even setting end dates for the purchase of new gas vehicles, Americans who own EVs are having second thoughts about their purchase, Fox News reports. According to a survey conducted by McKinsey & Co., 46% of those who now own an electric vehicle in the US stated that they were ‘very likely’ to replace it with a gas-powered car on their next purchase. The three main reasons for abandoning EVS were: 35% cited a lack of charging stations, particularly on highways; 34% reported on the overall cost of owning an EV, including the cost of purchase, maintenance, repair, insurance, and electricity; and 32% complained about the inconvenience of driving an EV, particularly on longer journeys. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) today announced the debut of a new Matter 1.3 specification that’s available for device makers and platforms. Matter is a smart home protocol that allows smart devices to work across multiple platforms, including HomeKit. Matter 1.3 adds support for a range of new device types and features, including water management devices, electric vehicle chargers, kitchen and laundry appliances, and TVs. For smart plugs and other devices, the update includes energy management reporting, allowing users to see actual and estimated measurements of power, voltage, and current, both in-real time and over time. EV Charging manufacturers are able to include Matter-based features such as manually starting and stopping charging, adjusting charging rate, and optimizing charging times.
