Matthew Vaughn, Apple’s ‘Argylle’ Bombs in Box Office Opening

Matthew Vaughn, Apple’s ‘Argylle’ Bombs in Box Office Opening

[ad_1] Spurned by many critics and consumers alike, Matthew Vaughn‘s pricey spy-comedy Argylle is bombing at the North American box office in the biggest miss to date for Apple’s theatrical ambitions. The movie — costing a reported $200 million to make before marketing — grossed $5.6 million on Friday for an estimated opening of $16.5 million. The results aren’t much better overseas, where Argylle is estimating a weekend opening of $16.9 million. Numbers will be updated Sunday morning. Because Apple is first and foremost one of the world’s richest tech companies whose priority on the content side is streaming, its theatrical efforts are judged differently. If legacy Hollywood studios released a $200 million movie with results like these, they would be skewered Universal is distributing Argylle on behalf of Apple Original Films in exchange for a distribution fee. Argylle, directed from a script by Wonder Woman‘s Jason Fuchs, tells the tale of a best-selling spy novelist and cat-loving recluse whose tranquil life is upended when the plots of her books begin coming to life. Vaughn’s …

Director Matthew Vaughn responds to rumours Taylor Swift was secret author behind Argylle | Ents & Arts News

[ad_1] British director Matthew Vaughn has dispelled online rumours that Taylor Swift was behind the pseudonym Elly Conway – the author of the novel connected to his new film Argylle. The film sees its protagonist Elly Conway, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, thrown into the world of espionage when she meets real spy Aiden, played by Sam Rockwell, on a train. Argylle also stars Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose and Catherine O’Hara. On Friday – the day of Argylle’s release in cinemas – The Telegraph revealed the real writers behind the novel – Terry Hayes and Tammy Cohen. Before filming for the production got under way, Vaughn asked Hayes to write a companion novel for the film – and soon Cohen was also brought on board. “What was crazy is my daughter wouldn’t believe me,” Vaughn says about the Taylor Swift rumours. The Kick-Ass director tells Sky News he spoke out at the first opportunity he got to quash the rumours, explaining he “didn’t want a bunch of Swifties or …

Argylle Reviews: Matthew Vaughn Film Branded ‘Shoddy’ And ‘Abysmal’

Argylle Reviews: Matthew Vaughn Film Branded ‘Shoddy’ And ‘Abysmal’

[ad_1] Ever since we saw the first star-studded trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s mysterious spy movie Argylle last year, we’ve had a lot of questions about it. Questions like, “what exactly is going on here?”, “is this for real?” and “no, seriously, is this for real?”. Well, after months of teasing, critics have now shared their first reviews for Argylle, which boasts an all-star cast including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose and Bryan Cranston. And, folks, they’re not good. So “not good”, in fact, that words like “lazy”, “unbearable”, “abysmal” and “insulting” are being flung around in early reviews. Here’s a selection of what critics have said about Argylle so far… “A new low… the Kingsman franchise film-maker indulges his fatally enervating penchant for empty CGI spectacle, underwhelming B-list performers and plots so lazy, derivative and nonsensical that they seem to exist only as snarking meta-gags about the fun of being deliberately terrible, and how trying is for wimps.” “The rectangle of the screen itself seems to bend and twist …

Where Have All the Original Action Movies Gone?

Where Have All the Original Action Movies Gone?

[ad_1] Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle borrows from a lot of very recent spy-thriller history. Apple TV+ January 31, 2024, 2:35 PM ET I have to give some credit to Matthew Vaughn’s new film, Argylle, for one thing: It is not—repeat, not—based on anything. An action movie with a reported near–$200 million budget and no connection to any preexisting intellectual property should be thrilling, a glorious throwback to the days when big films could just be about people punching and shooting each other without referencing some other storytelling universe. But it’s been curious to watch the public perception of Argylle, which is being marketed as a mystery film, in the lead-up to its release. Surely this movie couldn’t be just another guns-blazing spy thriller? What is the twist at the heart of Argylle? Did Taylor Swift secretly write it? I will leave many of the movie’s largest plot swerves to be discovered by viewers, though I can at least say that Swift seemingly has no involvement. But the meta-narratives around Argylle are quite telling, indicating how unusual …

Argylle review – unbearably self-satisfied smirk of a spy caper from Matthew Vaughn | Film

Argylle review – unbearably self-satisfied smirk of a spy caper from Matthew Vaughn | Film

[ad_1] The rectangle of the screen itself seems to bend and twist into a giant self-satisfied smirk for this unbearably smug caper from director Matthew Vaughn. It has all the interest of a men’s magazine cover-shoot: thin, flimsy, lumbered with a dull meta-narrative and dodgy acting, and boasting a blank parade of phoned-in cameos from the supporting cast. Argylle is a high-concept elevator pitch stuck between floors, a piece of colourful would-be franchise content that Vaughn is tiresomely trying to fold into the extended universe of his other work. I have in the past enjoyed this director’s raucous bad taste, and it’s not true to say that he can only direct macho guys because he got such great stuff from Chloë Grace Moretz in his superhero comedy Kick-Ass. But through some terrible directing anti-alchemy, he has elicited an awful lead performance here from Bryce Dallas Howard as spy novelist Elly Conway, whose creations uncannily mirror real life. She looks waxy, inert and uncomfortable; it’s as if she is wearing cut-glass contact lenses, with a torpid, …

Matthew Vaughn Reveals The Truth About Taylor Swift Argylle Rumours

Matthew Vaughn Reveals The Truth About Taylor Swift Argylle Rumours

[ad_1] Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn has spoken out about rumours Taylor Swift is behind his new film Argylle. Speculation has been rife about Argylle for months now, after Swifties began piecing together clues that suggested Taylor could secretly have penned the still-unreleased novel on which the spy movie is based, written by the enigmatic debut author Elly Conway. Now, we appreciate that sometimes Taylor-related conspiracy theories need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but this one genuinely sounded like it had some credibility to it, with key names and dates pointing to the I Knew You Were Trouble singer. However, Matthew has now insisted that there is no truth to the rumour at all. “I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me — this is the power of celebrity and the internet — and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!’” the filmmaker told Rolling Stone. “And I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She …

Walt Disney Imagineering snags Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn back from Airbnb

[ad_1] Walt Disney Imagineering, the workshop that makes all of the cool things you experience at the Disney Parks, is bringing back a veteran to co-lead the division. Bruce Vaughn was previously at WDI for 22 years, leaving for VR experience company Dreamscape before landing at Airbnb. Vaughn will take the role of Chief Creative Officer and co-lead of WDI. This news is likely to be shockwave-level (in a good way) among Imagineers present and past and those of us who follow the Parks and the people that create them.  Vaughn has been at Airbnb for a year and a half leading its Experiential Creative Product team. He was hired to develop more ‘immersive’ experiences at Airbnb, who had also hired former Disney Parks exec Catherine Powell to help them build out packages of excursions for Airbnb guests in an effort to go beyond lodging bookings.  Vaughn previously co-lead WDI as Chief Creative Executive for 9 years where he worked on projects across the company — including the renovation of EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth early on …
