Murphy, 63, who shot to fame on Saturday Night Live before establishing himself as a lead man with starring roles in The Golden Child and Harlem Nights, was steered away from the role by Poitier. In the new documentary Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, Murphy recalled the confusing career advice from the legendary In the Heat of the Night star. “They were talking about doing Malcolm X [and] Norman Jewison  (who directed Fiddler on the Roof and Moonstruck) was putting it together,” he recalled. “They were gonna use The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Hayley and they approached me about playing Alex Haley.” Murphy continued: “Around the same time, I bumped into Sidney Poitier at something and …

Keep Latin funding for six more months, Phillipson urged

Schools involved in the Latin Excellence Programme have written to the education secretary to ask for an extension Schools involved in the Latin Excellence Programme have written to the education secretary to ask for an extension More from this theme Recent articles School leaders have asked Bridget Phillipson to fund the government’s state school Latin scheme for six more months to help soften the blow of losing support. The £4m Latin Excellence Programme (LEP), designed to broaden access to the typically “elitist” subject, was supposed to run until 2026. But the DfE’s decision to stop funding from next month has left pupils facing disruption and sparked wider uproar. In a letter sent to the education secretary on Wednesday and seen by Schools Week, leaders of schools involved said that ending the scheme in February would place a “financial burden” on them. It would force them to divert funds from already stretched budgets to continue Latin provision for the academic year. MAT Future Academies – which spearheads the scheme, through its Centre for Latin Excellence – …

The Duke of York is at the centre of fresh controversy after Yang Tengbo, one of his former confidants, was barred from the UK for “covert and deceptive activity”. The Chinese businessman, named on Monday after a judge lifted a court order, is said to have leveraged his friendship with Andrew to gain access to Buckingham Palace. In the wake of the revelations, the duke had faced calls to withdraw from a Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Thursday and to avoid appearing with the royal family at Sandringham next week. It is understood that his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, convinced him to step away from the celebrations, giving up …

Labour Urged Not To Fall Into “Tory Trap” On Electric Vehicles

Labour Urged Not To Fall Into “Tory Trap” On Electric Vehicles

There are growing concerns from stakeholders the government is watering down its ZEV mandate. (Alamy) 4 min read03 December The director of a Labour Party environment campaign has urged the Government to not fall into the “Tory trap” of “chopping and changing policy” on green energy. Paul McNamee, Director of Labour Climate and Environment Forum, encouraged ministers to “stick to your guns” amid suggestions that they could relax rules around the phasing in of electrical vehicles.  Last week Stellantis, which owns car company Vauxhall, announced it was set to close its Luton van factory next year “within the context of the UK’s ZEV [zero-emission vehicle] mandate”, putting more than 1,000 jobs at risk. The firm had claimed that there was not enough consumer demand for electric vehicles. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds responded by saying he was “profoundly concerned” by how zero emissions policies were affecting businesses at a Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) dinner. Currently, car manufacturers are legally required to increase the number of ZEV vehicles to 100 per cent by 2035, the date at …

(Shutterstock) Sixty press freedom and journalist groups have signed an open letter urging the European Union to take action against Israel for violating media freedom. Every UK household urged to stockpile five items before Thursday

Every UK household urged to stockpile five items before Thursday

UK households are being advised to prepare for potential power cuts due to thunder and lightning storms by stockpiling five essential items before Thursday. The recent heatwave, which has seen much of England and Wales bask in hot sunny weather, is predicted to end abruptly with the arrival of these storms. Parts of northern England have already experienced such weather conditions, with other areas expected to follow suit in the coming days. According to the Met Office, Thursday will be the wettest and rainiest day overall in England. In light of this, British Gas has provided advice on how to deal with possible power cuts, suggesting that customers should have certain items at hand. These include torches, spare batteries (both AA and AAA), a backup charger for mobile phones, and potentially a battery-powered radio for local updates if mobile use becomes impossible. Of course, it’s wise to keep a cupboard filled with essential foods that can be prepared without electricity. If you have a gas hob, it’s simpler as you can still cook soups, tinned …

‘I cannot take it lightly’: young voters urged to take part in EU elections | European parliamentary elections 2024

The town has a farm, a university and a factory, but nobody agrees on where to put the police station. Around a large table in a stuffy room in a museum basement next to the Royal Palace of Brussels, a group of teenagers are haggling over the construction of a fictional town that has run out of budget. The group of 21 sixth formers from the south Belgian city of Mons have already divided into four political parties and fixed their priorities. Health, jobs and equality were high on everyone’s list. Now they have to find consensus on building a town, trading views over where to place brightly coloured blocks – standing for amenities – on the gleaming white table. “You are in the same town, there is no point having four hospitals,” suggests Elisabeth Goes d’Huart, the moderator of Democracity, a citizenship workshop at the Belvue, the Brussels history museum hosting the event. “You are 21 [people] and it’s already complicated to come to an agreement even in your own parties,” she says at …
