Apple Preparing for Upcoming Siri Onscreen Awareness Feature With New iOS 18.2 API for Developers

Apple Preparing for Upcoming Siri Onscreen Awareness Feature With New iOS 18.2 API for Developers

Apple is working on more advanced Siri functionality as part of its Apple Intelligence feature set, and to prepare, it has been providing developers with App Intent APIs so apps will be ready for the new capabilities. With the latest wave of betas, Apple has a new API that lets developers make onscreen content in their apps available to ‌Siri‌ and ‌Apple Intelligence‌. From Apple’s documentation: When a user asks a question about onscreen content or wants to perform an action on it, Siri and Apple Intelligence can retrieve the content to respond to the question and perform the action. If the user explicitly requests it, Siri and Apple Intelligence can send content to supported third-party services. For example, someone could view a website and use Siri to provide a summary by saying or typing a phrase like “Hey Siri, what’s this document about?” In the iOS 18.2 beta, ChatGPT integration with ‌Siri‌ allows users to ask questions about photos and documents, such as PDFs and presentations, and get information about them. You can, for …

This potato salad — with secret ingredients — is the ideal side dish for your upcoming summer BBQs

This potato salad — with secret ingredients — is the ideal side dish for your upcoming summer BBQs

I am a potato aficionado and can live up to that brag any day of the week. First, I have an inordinate amount of love in my heart for all potatoes, yes all, and that has to be criteria number one for my self-appointed title. Secondly, neither my enthusiasm nor my appreciation for them has ever waned, never, not when they were overly revered in the 1980’s and 90’s, not when they were vilified by Adkins and his ilk in the early aughts, and certainly not now in the era of ‘expert’ recommendations differing so dramatically and shifting so frequently.  Sure, I pick a favorite now and again and go through spells where I get a little obsessed with a certain kind, like a child latching on to a favorite cereal, but I snap out of it. All it takes is a change of season or a shift in the weather, or to catch sight of those lovely multi-hued, darling little heirloom fingerlings at the market; and I am back to enjoying all the seemingly …

Elon Musk outlines upcoming Tesla Full Self-Driving updates

Elon Musk outlines upcoming Tesla Full Self-Driving updates

Elon Musk has given an update with an outline for Tesla’s upcoming Full Self-Driving (FSD) software updates. With FSD v12 and the upcoming launch of Tesla’s dedicated Robotaxi, there’s a lot of excitement around Tesla’s self-driving effort. Musk is again in the too-familiar position of predicting that the automaker is close to releasing a true self-driving system, but the path to get there is still far from clear. Now the CEO is providing some new comments on the upcoming release schedule for FSD: “12.4 has almost completely retrained models. The final touches are for comfort, as it sometimes accelerates or brakes too fast for most people’s taste.” Tesla FSD drivers are currently on 12.3.6 and the .4 update is expected to be a bigger step change, which Musk appears to confirm by saying that Tesla “completely retrained” the models. The CEO recently said that Tesla is no longer constrained by training compute power after bringing more capacity online, giving the FSD team more opportunities to retrain neural nets with increasingly cleaner data. Musk then continued …

SpaceX reveals new sleek spacesuits ahead of upcoming historic mission

SpaceX reveals new sleek spacesuits ahead of upcoming historic mission

SpaceX has revealed its new Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suits that could make their low-Earth orbital debut by summer’s end. The new uniform is described as an evolution of the spacesuits currently worn by astronauts aboard Dragon missions, which are designed solely for remaining within pressurized environments. In contrast, the EVA suits will allow astronauts to work both within and outside their capsule as needed thanks to a number of advancements in materials fabrication, joint design, enhanced redundancy safeguards, as well as the integration of a helmet visor heads up display (HUD). Announced over the weekend, the SpaceX EVA suits will be worn by the four crewmembers scheduled to comprise the Polaris Program’s first mission, Polaris Dawn. First launched in 2022, the Polaris Program is a joint venture through SpaceX intended to “rapidly advance human spaceflight capabilities,” according to its website. Targeted for no earlier than summer 2024, Polaris Dawn will mark the first commercial spacewalk, as well as the first spacewalk to simultaneously include four astronauts. While making history outside their Dragon capsule, the crew …

Upcoming life-sim inZOI ready to take on The Sims at its own game

Upcoming life-sim inZOI ready to take on The Sims at its own game

If they weren’t already, life simulators are about to hit the big time. For so long the only real game that was able to to gain any traction in the, pretty much, one game genre of its own was Electronic Arts and Maxis’s seminal The Sims. Having first launched in 2000, The Sims has gone on to span a lifetime of getting on for 30 years at the top. I think it was at E3 in Atlanta in 1990 where I was first shown it on the Maxis stand, and even then there had been nothing like it really since the 8-bit computer days and Little Computer People. The Sims has largely had a free run at the life-sim world for that long, it’s strange, but that dominance is set to be challenged by a number of other games fast heading for release. We have already looked at Life by You and now we have much more information about the unusually titled inZOI, from Korean-based Krafton to dissect via a new roadmap video highlighting what …
