U.S. unveils $988 million aid package for Ukraine including rockets and drones

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin testifies before a U.S. House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee hearing on President Biden’s proposed budget request for the Department of Defense, on Capitol Hill in Washington, March 23, 2023. Michael A. McCoy | Reuters The United States unveiled a $988 million aid package of new arms and equipment to Ukraine for its ongoing fight against Russia’s invasion on Saturday. The package nearly halves the available $2.21 billion remaining in Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative as the Biden administration works to commit to buying weapons from industry, rather than pulling from U.S. weapons stocks. The USAI funds will be put toward buying ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) made by Lockheed Martin as well as drones and spare parts to maintain artillery equipment, according to the Pentagon. Announcement of the package came on Saturday as the defense industry and policy makers meet at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in California. The Biden administration has often used Presidential Drawdown Authority, which authorizes President Joe Biden to transfer excess articles and services …

Tesla unveils upgraded Optimus robot hand, but impressive demo is again teleoperated

Tesla unveils upgraded Optimus robot hand, but impressive demo is again teleoperated

Tesla has unveiled a new and upgraded hand for its Optimus humanoid robot and released an impressive albeit still teleoperated demonstration. The Optimus program is somewhat controversial for Tesla. This is partly because it is a significant departure from Tesla’s core products, but the company has also created doubts about things like not disclosing that its robots at its recent ‘We, Robot’ were remotely operated by humans. It wasn’t as much that they needed to be teleoperated, but the fact that Tesla didn’t disclose it until after the event. Now, Tesla has released a new video to demonstrate Optimus’ latest robot hand: The new hand is much more realistic, and it actually has tendons, much like a human hand. Tesla says that it has 22 degrees of freedom on the hand and another three on the wrist and forearm. This time, Tesla was quicker to confirm that this Optimus was also teleoperated in this demonstration. Milan Kovac, the head of the Optimus program, elaborated about what’s next in the short term for the robot: There’s …

Instagram unveils new feature as govt tightens online safety rules | Science, Climate & Tech News

Instagram is releasing a feature that will let users easily reset their algorithms, as the government strengthens its regulation of online safety. With the new reset feature, users can clear their recommended content from Explore, Reels and their feed, potentially reducing the amount of harmful content they are exposed to. It’s all part of Meta’s push to make the app safer for young people, after announcing more private Teen accounts in September. The feature, which will soon be rolled out globally, was announced as the government outlined its priorities for online safety. Peter Kyle, Labour’s technology secretary, said Ofcom should ensure the concept of “safety by design” is being followed by tech companies from the outset. That would ensure more harm is caught before it occurs. Image: Peter Kyle (L). Pic: Reuters He also pushed for more transparency from tech giants on what harms are occurring on their platforms. “From baking safety into social media sites from the outset, to increasing platform transparency, these priorities will allow us to monitor progress, collate evidence, innovate, and …

JiYue unveils ROBO X EV that goes 0-100 km/h in under 1.9 sec

JiYue unveils ROBO X EV that goes 0-100 km/h in under 1.9 sec

JiYue, a Chinese EV brand focused on delivering all-electric “robocars” to the masses, has unveiled its latest model, and it’s quite a deviation from its previous EVs—but in the best way. Earlier today, JiYue launched the ROBO X supercar, designed for high-speed racing. By high speed, we mean 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 1.9 seconds. My mouth is watering. JiYue has only existed since 2021, when parent tech company Baidu announced it was expanding from software development into physical EV production, joining forces with multinational automotive manufacturer Geely. The new “robotic EV” marque initially launched as JIDU with $300 million in startup capital before garnering an additional $400 million in Series A funding, led by Baidu, in January 2022. In August 2023, Geely took on a larger role in JIDU alongside a greater financial stake as the brand reimagined itself as JiYue, inheriting the JIDU logo and its flagship model, the 01 ROBOCAR. In December 2023, Baidu and Geely unveiled a second model called the JiYue 07. It was born from JIDU’s ROBO-02 concept, which debuted in 2023 and was designed …

As you move from one area to the Donkey Kong Country, Miyamoto pointed out that you move from blocks to rocks as you go through a tunnel. With a jungle theme, Miyamoto showed off the Donkey Kong Tree House and the Golden Temple. On the temple, there’s a face of a monkey with steam spewing out of its mouth. He played large conga drums that were connected to …

NASA unveils model of LISA, a satellite array for studying ripples in space-time

NASA has released new images of the full-scale prototypes of six telescopes slated to observe some of the universe’s tiniest fluctuations. On October 22, the agency showed off mock-ups of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a European Space Agency-led project slated to embark on its mission around 2035. While not the final working equipment meant to measure gravitational waves, the mock-up offers glimpses of a design that will likely resemble the machine array destined to help astronomers discover potentially groundbreaking insights into the universe and its origins. Meta unveils it’s newest AI tool, Movie Gen

Meta unveils it’s newest AI tool, Movie Gen

Meta just announced a new generative AI model to help users turn simple text into images, videos, and audio clips. Meta Movie Gen allows users to input text and automatically generate new videos, personalize videos, do video editing, and generate audio, all of which is trained on a “combination of licensed and publicly available datasets.” If that seems a lot like OpenAI’s Sora, that’s because it is quite similar. But Movie Gen builds upon Meta’s previous work with AI — you might remember, or even use, Llama Image, for instance. But Movie Gen is the third wave of its generative AI work, which Meta says combines all of its previous modalities. “Similar to previous generations,” Meta wrote in a blog post, “we anticipate these models enabling various new products that could accelerate creativity.” Meta notes that “generative AI isn’t a replacement for the work of artists and animators,” but says the company “believe[s] in the power of this technology to help people express themselves in new ways and to provide opportunities to people who might …
