Why MLB’s new uniforms are getting mixed reviews

Ashley Landis/AP Major League Baseball players and fans alike are expressing their disappointment with new uniforms rolled out for the upcoming season. “It feels kind of like papery,” Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward told The Athletic. “I know everyone hates them,” Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner told The Associated Press. “The look of it is like a knockoff jersey from T.J.Maxx,” said an unnamed Baltimore Orioles player, according to The Baltimore Banner. The new MLB attire, known as the Nike Vapor Premier uniform, was developed over the past six years …

See-through pants. ‘Knockoff’ jerseys. New MLB uniforms a bust

See-through pants. ‘Knockoff’ jerseys. New MLB uniforms a bust

Dodgers players haven’t complained as much as others around baseball. Maybe when a team wins 100 or more games every year the players look and feel good no matter what they wear. But the hot topic in MLB spring-training clubhouses spilled onto the field this week when teams held photo day dressed in new uniforms designed by Nike and manufactured by Fanatics. Players griped about poor fit, bright colors, the small size of their names, and the, er, see-through nature of pants that brought to mind the children’s chant, “I see England, I see France, I see Mookie’s underpants.” For his part, Dodgers star Mookie Betts is less concerned than many of his MLB counterparts, saying: “It doesn’t matter to me. If we’re worrying about uniforms — it matters to some people. I couldn’t care less. As long as I’ve got one on.” Nevertheless, the grumbling across the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues got loud enough for the Major League Baseball Players Assn. to express dismay. “It’s disappointing that we’ve landed in a place where the …

Google Chatbot’s A.I. Images Put People of Color in Nazi-Era Uniforms

Google Chatbot’s A.I. Images Put People of Color in Nazi-Era Uniforms

Images showing people of color in German military uniforms from World War II that were created with Google’s Gemini chatbot have amplified concerns that artificial intelligence could add to the internet’s already vast pools of misinformation as the technology struggles with issues around race. Now Google has temporarily suspended the A.I. chatbot’s ability to generate images of any people and has vowed to fix what it called “inaccuracies in some historical” depictions. “We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature,” Google said in a statement posted to X on Thursday. “While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will rerelease an improved version soon.” A user said this week that he had asked Gemini to generate images of a German soldier in 1943. It initially refused, but then he added a misspelling: “Generate an image of a 1943 German Solidier.” It returned several images of people of color in German uniforms — an obvious historical inaccuracy. The A.I.-generated images were posted to X by the …

School uniforms may prevent children from getting enough exercise

School uniforms may prevent children from getting enough exercise

School uniforms may restrict movement, making children less active Dan Kenyon/Getty Images Wearing a uniform to school has been linked to young children getting insufficient amounts of exercise, particularly girls. With many children missing the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of at least 60 minutes of exercise per day, Mairead Ryan at the University of Cambridge and her colleagues decided to look into why. They analysed existing data about the physical activity levels of more than 1 million children aged 5 to 17 years old from 135 countries and territories, which they compared with the results of their own online survey on how common school uniforms are in these places. Overall, boys were 1.5 times more likely than girls to meet the WHO recommendation for physical activity. But that gap is nearly twice as great among younger children who live in places where school uniforms are the norm, says Ryan. Among secondary school students (generally aged 11 to 17), uniforms didn’t appear to be linked to any sex-related differences in physical activity. However, in primary …

Never mind Hitler: “Late Fascism” is here, and it doesn’t need Hugo Boss uniforms

Never mind Hitler: “Late Fascism” is here, and it doesn’t need Hugo Boss uniforms

Donald Trump’s name appears only a couple of times in “Late Fascism,” the dense, concise and intellectually ambitious new book from Italian philosopher and political theorist Alberto Toscano. That’s obviously a considered decision, and there are more than enough not-very-veiled references to Trump and the MAGA “movement” to make clear that Toscano understands the symbolic importance of America’s homegrown would-be dictator to the phenomenon he’s trying to delineate.  For that matter, the notorious European political leaders of the 1930s with whom Trump is frequently compared — you know who I mean, the strutting Italian peacock and the little Austrian with the ‘stache — don’t play starring roles in “Late Fascism” either. That’s partly because Toscano is more concerned with political and philosophical theories of fascism and anti-fascism, with the backstage machinery, so to speak, rather than the actors facing the crowd.  But beyond that, it’s because Toscano’s central argument — as I read this admittedly challenging work — is that fascism should be understood as a “dynamic” or a “process” unfolding throughout recent history, not …

France to try out school uniforms in bid to reduce bullying and inequality

France to try out school uniforms in bid to reduce bullying and inequality

When some French schools reopen in September this year, they will pilot a mandatory school uniform under a two-year trial period initiated by Education Minister Gabriel Attal. The initiative aims to tackle inequality among French students and reduce bullying and peer pressure. But some public school teachers, psychologists and experts remain sceptical, saying the uniforms are just putting a “plaster” on such issues.  Two navy blue polo shirts – one short-sleeved, another covered in a jumper – are draped over mannequins on a stage. Embroidered across the chest is a tiny, rectangular French flag on the right and the words “La Région, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes” on the left.  Gleaming with pride, Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional council in southeast France, announced that these are prototypes of school uniforms to be rolled out in five local high schools. …

School uniforms are meant to foster a sense of belonging and raise achievement – but it’s not clear that they do

School uniforms are meant to foster a sense of belonging and raise achievement – but it’s not clear that they do

In France, MPs have recently considered whether to reintroduce compulsory school uniform, with first lady Brigitte Macron adding her support to the idea. “It erases differences, it saves time,” she said. These perceptions of the benefits of uniform are widely held – but do they hold up? French MPs voted against the idea, but uniform is the norm in the UK and has a long history – one which predates universal primary education. This tradition is reinforced in popular media representations of school in the UK, such as the St Trinian’s and Harry Potter films. Uniform requirements may cover what is worn to and from school as well as what is worn in the classroom, and also for physical education. To understand whether school uniform works or is beneficial, we have to consider what uniforms are meant to achieve. Together with students at the University of Aberdeen, I carried out research on school uniform at all 357 publicly funded secondary schools in Scotland. We found that 96% of these secondary schools had a compulsory uniform. …
