9 unforgettable moments that made TV great in 2024

9 unforgettable moments that made TV great in 2024

You already have your own list of best TV shows, and who am I to disagree? Any show that makes your mood a little lighter or moves you in some extraordinary way fits that designation. But traditions must be attended to, including our annual “best of” round-ups.  Regardless of the TV industry’s contraction, there are still too many outstanding shows for one person to keep up with, let alone capture in a single list. That’s one reason every year-end list of best series has its omissions; nobody can watch everything.  There are all kinds of “Best TV Series of 2024” lists, though, led by certain award magnets. FX’s “Shogun” is an all-around masterpiece.  “Ripley” and “Baby Reindeer” are among Netflix’s top must-sees. Apple TV+ continues to draw audiences with shows like “Disclaimer” (a favorite of my colleague Coleman Spilde), “Slow Horses” and the delightful “Loot.”  HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” is the deftest revival of a dead franchise I’ve seen in a long time, and “Dune: Prophecy” is an elegant extension of a cinematic phenomenon. …

Bringing an “Unforgettable Movie Monster” to Life in ‘Grendel’

Bringing an “Unforgettable Movie Monster” to Life in ‘Grendel’

The word “epic” gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of Grendel, a live-action retelling of John Gardner’s 1971 novel of the same name, it’s not hyperbole. Writer-director Robert D. Krzykowski adapted the book, a modern classic that retells the old English epic poem Beowulf from the perspective of the monster Grendel, who terrorizes the kingdom of Hrothgar of the Danes for 12 years. The cast is epic, too, with Jeff Bridges as the titular monster, Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar, Dave Bautista as the warrior Beowulf and T Bone Burnett as the blind, harp-playing Shaper. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is doing the creature work and design. Filming is set to begin in Europe next year. Palisades Park Pictures is handling international sales; CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group co-rep rights for North America. The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with Krzykowski about Grendel’s deeply conflicted worldview and why his story never gets old. There are so many movies based in mythology and fantasy and comic-book-type worlds. It’s strange that the story of Grendel hasn’t been explored more in film.  Totally. …

11 unforgettable scenes from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards

11 unforgettable scenes from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards

On a frigid early morning during the Chinese New Year, a stealthy Pallas’s cat prepares for a breakfast of freshly caught bird. In that moment, Xingchao Zhu snapped a photograph. The wild cat’s piercing golden eyes connect with the camera, the light of the setting moon creating a dramatic backdrop. “Moonlight Hunter”Xingchao Zhu comes face to face with a Pallas’s cat as the moon sets. Xingchao tracked a group of Pallas’s cats on the freezing plateau of Inner Mongolia for several days during the Chinese New Year in February 2023. Shortly before dawn, Xingchao managed to make eye contact with this cat, just as it had caught a small bird. The thick winter coats of Pallas’s cats help them survive at altitudes up to 5,000 metres (16,400 feet). They avoid larger predators by stealth, and it’s thought that their low, rounded ears allow them to peer over obstacles while remaining hidden. Demi Moore Makes an Unforgettable 2024 Met Gala Comeback

Demi Moore‘s return to the Met Gala was unforgettable. The actress walked the 2024 Met Gala steps in an unexpected structural gown by Harris Reed, marking the first time she has attended the event in five years. Her floor-length black column gown was made from archival vintage wallpaper.  Staying on the “Garden of Time” dress code, her getup featured a pink-and-white floral design and a protruding heart-shaped structural element with spiked arrows. Her sleek black hair and soft makeup allowed for her dramatic outfit to take center stage. 7 Unforgettable Indigenous Historical Fiction Books

7 Unforgettable Indigenous Historical Fiction Books

Historical fiction is a genre that balances entertainment and education. It can be a light-hearted romp that happens to be set in a different time period without getting too bogged down in specific historical details, or it can be a meticulously researched story that fills in the gaps of a historical figure’s life. Either way, historical fiction allows us to walk around in the shoes of someone living in very different circumstances, and at its best, it spotlights the people and stories that have been neglected in history books. That’s why task #10 of the 2024 Read Harder Challenge is “Read a historical fiction book by an Indigenous author.” Indigenous history is often suppressed or whitewashed: colonizers rarely want to own up to the violence and cruelty of taking land by force. Historical fiction can be a more accessible way to experience these stories, as opposed to nonfiction. The Indigenous historical fiction books listed below are mostly from North America. Book Riot is based in North America, and I think it’s important for us to …

‘Gissa job!’ How Bernard Hill created one of TV’s most tragic and unforgettable characters | Television

‘Gissa job!’ How Bernard Hill created one of TV’s most tragic and unforgettable characters | Television

Some time in 1980, on the first sheet of a script that would eventually run to 221 pages, Alan Bleasdale typed the line: We see Yosser with his three children. He is leaning forward. When the jobcentre clerk explains he is “afraid” he can’t do anything, the pale-faced, dark-moustached man snaps: “Afraid? Y’ll be terrified in a minute. [Leans in.] Now sort me soddin’ Giro check out before I knock y’into the disability department.” Anyone who has watched Boys from the Blackstuff immediately hears the mellifluously menacing voice of Bernard Hill and sees the tall broad frame that was often angled forward. Bleasdale’s frequent specification that Yosser was “leaning in” warned that the unemployed road layer was about to head-butt a person, wall or church, as he indelibly did in scenes from the series. That Hill, who died yesterday aged 79, was able to turn this dialogue and action into one of the most memorable characters in British TV history was due to his strong face and acting brain, but also the two layers of …

King Charles’ coronation anniversary: monarch’s year in 10 unforgettable photos

King Charles’ coronation anniversary: monarch’s year in 10 unforgettable photos

It has been a whole year since the nation celebrated the King and Queen’s historic coronation, with Charles crowned during an ancient ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023. The service took place almost eight months after Charles succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, to the throne. The coronation kickstarted a summer of royal firsts for the new monarch as well as several ceremonial milestones, including his inaugural King’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament. Charles launched The Coronation Food Project to coincide with his 75th birthday last November and hosted the royal family for his second-ever Christmas as King at Sandringham. This year, the royals have been rocked by the King and the Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnoses, with Charles’ cancer discovered after undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate. The monarch’s large-scale engagements were paused as he began treatment, but on 30 April, the King made a significant return to public-facing duties as he visited the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre. As the royals mark the one-year anniversary since the coronation, …

Nico: The Marble Index/Desertshore review – an unforgettable trip to a very dark place | Nico

Nico: The Marble Index/Desertshore review – an unforgettable trip to a very dark place | Nico

To say Nico is an artist more talked about than listened to is putting it mildly. In recent years, her life has been the subject of two plays, two autobiographies, a biopic and at least four songs, Low’s Those Girls (Song for Nico) and Beach House’s Last Ride among them. But Spotify’s list of her 10 most popular tracks contains two of her three contributions to the first Velvet Underground album – These Days and The Fairest of the Seasons – the two Jackson Browne covers from her debut solo album that were featured in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums, and … five Velvet Underground songs that don’t actually feature Nico: she does appear on the No 1, Sunday Morning, but only as a spectral presence, her few backing vocals buried deep in the mix. It’s hard to think of another artist so tangentially attached to their most-streamed song – Milli Vanilli, perhaps. Nico: The Marble Index album art. Perhaps this is rooted in the fact that Nico’s slender solo oeuvre is preceded by its …
