EU seeks ‘fair and balanced’ trade ties with China, says bloc’s foreign policy chief Borrell

“The purpose of this conference is to bring as many people as possible to discuss how peace could look like,” said Mr Borrell, adding that the EU has a “strong moral commitment” to back Ukraine against Russian invaders. “This country wants to explain to the rest of the world what’s happening and which are their proposals to stop the war, and the more people (attend) at the highest possible level, the more the international community has to use their influence and their capacity to stop this war. It’s not a peace conference, it’s a conference about peace.” In 1994, three years after its independence, Ukraine gave up its arms and nuclear arsenal – the third largest in the world at the time – to Russia in exchange for security assurances that its territorial sovereignty would be respected. Ukraine was then a nuclear power, but it returned all the missiles “because the international community was not in favour of proliferation”, Mr Borrell pointed out.  “Russia signed a commitment ensuring the territorial integrity of Ukraine. So whoever …

Ukraine pulls back from three villages as eastern front worsens, top commander says

KYIV: Ukraine’s top commander said on Sunday (Apr 28) Kyiv’s outnumbered troops had fallen back to new positions west of three villages on the eastern front where Russia has concentrated significant forces in several locations. The statement by Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi reflected Ukraine’s deteriorating position in the east that Kyiv hopes it can stabilise once it takes delivery of US weapons under a US$61 billion aid package approved this week. “The situation at the front has worsened,” he wrote on the Telegram app, describing the “most difficult” areas as west of occupied Maryinka and northwest of Avdiivka, the town captured by Russian forces in February. Kyiv’s troops, he said, had taken up new positions west of the villages of Berdychi and Semenivka, both north of Avdiivka, and Novomykhailivka, further south near the town of Maryinka. “In general, the enemy achieved certain tactical successes in these areas, but could not gain operational advantages,” Syrskyi said, adding that Russia had committed four brigades to the assault. Freshly rested Ukrainian brigades were being rotated in those areas to replace units that had suffered losses, …

Ships smuggling Russian oil spotted in satellite images by AI

The vessel Merope anchored in the bay of Ceuta, Spain, after having carried out oil transfer operations in international waters, 14 March 2023 Antonio Sempere/Associated Press/Alamy Artificial intelligence can spot stealthy cargo transfers between “dark ships”, vessels that have switched off their identification transponders. This could make it much easier to track the shadow fleet secretly transferring crude oil in defiance of international sanctions. Such ship-to-ship transfers at sea have skyrocketed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine spurred the European Union to ban the import of Russian crude oil. Although the G7… Source link

US to take aim at Chinese banks aiding Russia war effort, WSJ reports

US to take aim at Chinese banks aiding Russia war effort, WSJ reports

Cutting banks off from access to the dollar – the denomination of most of global trade – is often reserved as a last resort, as such sanctions often force banks into failure, affecting their customer and client base. Such an action also represents a particular risk for China as the country grapples with sputtering economic recovery and growing debt. The People’s Bank of China and the National Financial Regulatory Administration, China’s top banking regulator, didn’t immediately reply to Reuters’ requests for comments. China and Russia have fostered more trade in yuan instead of dollar in the wake of the Ukraine war, an effort that could shield their economies from potential escalating US sanctions. The United States and other Western nations imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia’s financial system after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Several banks in China, the United Arab Emirates and Türkiye have boosted their sanctions compliance requirements, resulting in delays or even the rejection of money transfers to Moscow, Reuters reported in March. The delays show how US restrictions can have a …

Russia says deeper US hybrid war using Ukraine will end in Vietnam-style humiliation

Russia says deeper US hybrid war using Ukraine will end in Vietnam-style humiliation

MOSCOW: Russia said on Sunday (Apr 21) that US lawmakers’ approval of US$60.84 billion more in support for Ukraine showed that Washington was wading deeper into a hybrid war with Russia that would end in humiliation on a par with Vietnam or Afghanistan. President Vladimir Putin’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine has triggered the worst crisis in relations between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, according to Russian and US diplomats. The US House of Representatives on Saturday with broad bipartisan support passed a US$95 billion legislative package providing security assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, over bitter objections from some Republicans. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that it was clear that the United States wanted Ukraine “to fight to the last Ukrainian” including with attacks on Russian sovereign territory and civilians. “Washington’s deeper and deeper immersion in the hybrid war against Russia will turn into such a loud and humiliating fiasco for United States as Vietnam and Afghanistan,” Zakharova said. She said that ordinary Ukrainians were being “forcibly …

NATO turns 75 in shadow of Ukraine war – and Trump

NATO turns 75 in shadow of Ukraine war – and Trump

In a bid to stave off Trump’s criticisms, NATO has showcased increased spending by its European allies – with 20 members this year set to hit a target of two per cent of GDP for defence. “North America also needs Europe,” Stoltenberg said, after a Belgian military band played the NATO anthem. “Through NATO, the United States has more friends and more allies than any other major power.” UKRAINE WANTS AIR DEFENCE While Trump looms over the future of the alliance, NATO countries face the more pressing challenge of ensuring Ukraine does not lose its fight to push back Russia. Alliance members have thrown their weight behind Kyiv – which is bidding to join NATO – by sending Ukraine weapons worth tens of billions of dollars. But those supplies have now dwindled as crucial US support remains blocked by political wrangling. On the frontline, Ukraine’s outgunned forces have been pushed onto the back foot. In the face of surging Russian missile attacks on its infrastructure, Kyiv is pleading with its Western backers to send all …

Putin tipped to ‘invade Poland next’ in ultimate test for NATO unless Ukraine stops him | World | News

Russia poses ‘danger’ to The West warns Inna Sovsun Vladimir Putin will roll his tanks into Poland and the Baltic States if the West does not act now to give Volodymyr Zelensky the weapons he needs to stop him, a former Ukrainian government minister has warned. And Inna Sovsun compared her country’s stand with Britain’s against Adolf Hitler in 1939, as well as emphasising that without US military aid, the fight was hopeless. Speaking via videolink from Kyiv the day before the second anniversary of Putin’s invasion, Ms Sovsun told Express.co.uk the situation was much the same as it was two years ago. She explained: “I think what people should think about is to try and remember their own feelings on February 24, 2022 and how they felt in that moment. “And the general feeling among the absolute majority of the world was the general injustice that was being done to the Ukrainian people. ‘Don’t lose heart’: NATO chief tells Ukraine and allies

BRUSSELS, Belgium: NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Saturday (Feb 24) urged Ukraine and its allies not to “lose heart” as Russian President Vladimir Putin presses his bloody offensive two years into the war. “The situation on the battlefield remains extremely serious. President Putin’s aim to dominate Ukraine has not changed, and there are no indications that he is preparing for peace,” Stoltenberg said in a recorded message to mark the second anniversary of the invasion. “But we must not lose heart. Ukraine has demonstrated remarkable skill and fierce determination again and again.” The second anniversary of the invasion comes as Ukraine’s outgunned troops are struggling to hold the front line and doubts swirl over future support from the United States. Stoltenberg pointed to recent promises of military aid from NATO states “worth billions of dollars”. “These cover key capabilities like artillery ammunition, air defence, and combat boats. As well as F-16 equipment and spare parts, drones, and demining equipment. “More support is on the way.” Stoltenberg said Putin had started his war to close the door …

‘Ukraine is frozen in time, February 24 2022 forever imprinted in our memories’ | World | News

It has been two years since life changed for ever for the people of Ukraine. The world was shocked to see the images of destruction and chaos across my country. Nowhere was spared. But though two years may sound like a long time, for most of us, time has stood still. Ukraine is still feeling deeply the impacts of this conflict. People continue to live in fear of the next bombing, air raid sirens have become a part of our daily sounds. On top of this, it is bitterly cold. More than 3.7 million people are displaced within Ukraine. That means they are in temporary or makeshift shelters. Many people live in damaged homes. They struggle to stay warm. READ MORE: ‘Putin’s not worth talking about – victory for Ukraine over Russia will come’ But even when the buds of spring bloom and the warm weather comes again, millions of people across Ukraine, and the millions more who have been forced to flee their country, will continue to feel frozen in time. They have lost …
