Here in the UK talking about the weather is already a national pastime, but this month the water-cooler weather chat has ramped up a notch as rain, grey skies and biting temperatures have put summer firmly on hold. Incredible weather maps turn bright yellow as UK hit by ‘mini 21C heatwave’ | Weather | News

The UK is to be heit by a 21C “mini heatwave” this weekend, according to the latest weather maps. Forecasters at WXCharts say Brits should prepare for warm weather on Sunday, May 12, with the south of the country seeing the best of the weather. East Anglia, London and the Midlands are to see the best of the weather with a chance of temperatures higher than 20C, while almost all of the country will see temperatures in excess of 17C. In the north, the hottest places will be Liverpool, Glasgow and Newcastle which should all see the mercury rise to around 19C, the charts predict. While there will be warmer weather, the period will not officially be a heatwave. The Met Office says a heatwave is a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding 25C. For the same period the national forecaster predicted “fine and dry” weather for the majority of Britain. Its forecast for the period between Friday, May 10 and Sunday, May 19, read: “There is …

Heatstroke and sunstroke symptoms, treatments and how to prevent it

Heatstroke and sunstroke symptoms, treatments and how to prevent it

Occasionally, Britain is treated to prolonged hot temperatures or heatwaves, with many of us making an immediate beeline for the nearest sun-soaked beach or park. But high temperatures aren’t always rosy – they could bring a real danger of heatstroke. Heatstroke (also referred to as sunstroke) is a serious condition that is commonly caused by hot weather or exercise. In this state, the body is no longer able to cool itself down and the temperature reaches dangerously high levels.  The condition can affect anyone, but babies, young children, people over the age of 75 and those with underlying health conditions could be at greater risk, according to Public Health England. But fear not. We have investigated the heatstroke symptoms and treatments, as well as how long the condition lasts, so you can feel prepared should a heatwave strike. What are heatstroke symptoms? If you sit out in the sunshine for too long, you might experience “heat exhaustion”. This is where you may start excessively sweating, feel dizzy or nauseous, lose your appetite, experience cramps in your legs, …

Miserable Weather Is Finally Coming To An End As High Temperatures Hit The UK

Miserable Weather Is Finally Coming To An End As High Temperatures Hit The UK

This is the UK, so I don’t want to speak too soon, but it seems that the rain is actually… coming to an end?! For now at least. I’m not brave enough to look at my Instagram archive to see what the weather was like this time last year but I have to say, it feels like summer is reeeaaallly dragging its feet in coming to us. From waterlogged lawns to dramatic flooding, we’ve had a rough time of it these past six months and according to the Met Office, things are about to get much brighter for us in the UK. When will it get warmer in the UK? Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Met Office said: “High pressure will dominate for many this week, bringing more settled weather than of late. “Temperatures will also rise, and by Saturday we could see a high of around 26 °C in the southeast, with several places reaching around 21 degrees further north too.” Addtionally, a temperature map on the Met Office website shows …

UK weather maps show exact date 20c mini heatwave will hit with three areas hottest | Weather | News

The UK is to be hit by a mini heatwave next week with three areas getting a particularly generous sprinkling of sun. Forecasters at WXCharts say the mercury will soar above 20C next weekend with Bristol, West Sussex and Hampshire seeing the best of the weather on May 11. In those areas, temperatures could reach 21C with even the coolest parts of the country seeing 16C in the centre and north of Scotland. But despite glorious sunshine, some parts of the country may still see some drizzle, with light rain predicted in Manchester, Birmingham, Stoke and Liverpool. Its forecast for the period between Friday, May 10 and Sunday, May 19, read: “There is a strong signal for high pressure across the …

Weather expert issues brutal verdict on 19C bank holiday scorcher | Weather | News

Brits looking forward to a hot and sunny Bank Holiday weekend may be disappointed as a weather expert has shared a brutal verdict for the long weekend. While some weather maps suggest that some areas in the UK will experiencing warmer temperatures up to 18C, an expert has cast doubt on these predictions. Maps from WXCharts and Netweather.tv suggest areas around Scotland could see 18C over the weekend. In the southern regions, the Midlands will also experience mild temperatures of around 16C near the Pennines and the city of Newcastle. Meanwhile, cities in England and Wales can expect slightly cooler temperatures ranging from 13C to 15C. While London may see temperatures dropping as low as 12C, maps suggest. However, a top meterologist feels that “weather may dampen the mood” of Britons looking forward to the weekend. Jim Dale, founder of British Weather Services, told Express.co.uk: “For the most part on Saturday, it will be dry weather with temperatures hovering around 18-19C in areas like East Anglia, and Humberside. “Some areas might be cooler than that, …

Trains delayed as lightning storms disrupt public transport electricity lines

Trains delayed as lightning storms disrupt public transport electricity lines

Minor delays were also reported on South Western and Great Western railways while London Transport was reporting “good service” for all lines despite patches of heavy rain.  Social media users have been sharing videos and photos of spectacular lightning shows above their homes, with some residents reporting that the sky was so bright it lit up their homes as they were awoken by booming thunder.  The clouds will clear later in the morning before the temperature rises and delivers some of the warmest weather of the year, said Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna. This would come a day after Wednesday saw temperatures peak at their highest yet in 2024 at 22.1C. Mr Petagna told the PA news agency: “After a night of storms, the rain will ease in the south of England for a while tomorrow. We could see the skies brightening up in a few places and it will be another warm day. Parts of the South East could even get to 24 degrees and beat today’s temperatures. “But as the skies brighten and …

The 1 Grim Reason Crows Could Be Coming To Your Lawn

The 1 Grim Reason Crows Could Be Coming To Your Lawn

Ah, spring ― while it might have brought us pretty mixed weather so far, there’s no denying the season has led to bountiful gardens (and all the tasks that go with it). But if you’ve started to notice ominous yellow patches on your lawn, you might not need to use your hose or buy some fertiliser ― the issue could be chafer bugs. The larvae of chafer beetles, chafer grubs may also be bringing more crows, badgers, and even foxes to your backyard. But how can you spot them ― and what should you do if you think you have them? Chafer grubs aren’t all bad Though some chafer grubs feed on grass roots, leading to discolouration and even death of the blade, most of the 80-ish species in the UK are harmless to your garden. Those who live in your garden borders or hide out in your compost heap, for instance, are unlikely to cause many problems. But if you’ve got a harmful chafer bug, you may notice patches of your grass turning yellow …
