Warning: Spoilers for Gladiator II are below. The newly released trailer reveals that Mescal’s character is actually the son of Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the first film), and not Lucius Verus I, as he was made to believe since birth. In the scene, Lucius’s mother Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen) shares words of wisdom with him as he readies himself for battle, saying: “Take your father’s strength, his name was Maximus, and I see him in you.” In another shot, Mescal looks at a stone wall with “Maximus” carved into it. In 2000’s Gladiator, the identity of Lucius’s father was never explicitly revealed but the signs were there, since Lucilla and Maximus were former lovers. There was also a clue they …

‘It doesn’t make any sense’: new twist in mystery of Mount Everest and the British explorers’ missing bodies | Mount Everest

“It will be a great adventure,” George Mallory wrote to his mother before leaving for the summit of Everest a century ago this week. His disappearance, along with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine, has become one of the most alluring mysteries in the history of exploration. A final, tantalising glimpse of the pair through mist not far from the summit has inspired successive generations of historians, authors and film-makers with competing theories on a single question: did they reach the top? Now there is a new mystery to solve about the fate of Mallory and Irvine: what has happened to their bodies? Mallory’s was discovered in 1999 by American climber Conrad Anker who left it where it lay; researchers had also zeroed in on the location of Irvine’s resting place. But Jamie McGuinness, who has reached the summit five times from the Tibetan side, said that following an extensive search of the area during an expedition in 2019, he has concluded the bodies of both British climbers were removed at some point in the 2000s. …

‘Sugar’s wild twist, explained | Mashable

You’d be forgiven for thinking Sugar is your run-of-the-mill type crime show, because up until the end of episode 6 that’s exactly what it is. John Sugar (Colin Farrell) has spent the season so far on the trail of missing influencer Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), the granddaughter of powerful Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell). There’s mystery, there’s red herrings, and there’s the LA criminal underbelly. There’s Farrell’s gravelly-voiced narration. All pretty standard ingredients for a neo-noir missing person thriller. But then, right at the end of episode 6, things appear to go completely off the rails. So what exactly happened, and what does it all mean? Let’s dive in. SEE ALSO: The 20 best TV shows of 2023 What’s Sugar about? The eponymous Sugar is a kind of James Bond-type character, a private investigator who specialises in tracking down the missing. Driven by memories of his own sister, Sugar has been hell-bent this season on finding Olivia, whose brother David (Nate Corddry) is caught up in some shady business with human traffickers. Sugar is …

Randall Emmett continues to produce films with a new twist

Randall Emmett continues to produce films with a new twist

On Friday, John Travolta debuts his latest film — “Cash Out,” an action thriller about a bank heist gone wrong. The trailer credits it as “a film by Ives.” “Cash Out” is the first and only project Ives has ever worked on, according to IMDb. But over his quarter-century in the entertainment business, “Ives” has in fact directed five films, produced dozens more and appeared on the reality TV show “Vanderpump Rules.” He was also the subject of a 2022 Los Angeles Times investigation and subsequent Hulu documentary that delved into allegations of abuse against women and assistants as well as mistreatment of business partners, which he has denied. It was after those headlines that Randall Emmett began using Ives, which is his middle name, as his professional name. The shift began on “Cash Out” and continued with its sequel, which was shot last spring at a Mississippi casino. On the set of “Armored,” a film made during the actors’ strike last fall, star Sylvester Stallone arrived on set unaware that Emmett was the project’s …

Revealed: the next Sherlock Holmes author, with a twist in the tale | Arthur Conan Doyle

Revealed: the next Sherlock Holmes author, with a twist in the tale | Arthur Conan Doyle

The biggest thorn in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s side was the world’s obstinate obsession with just one of his creations: Sherlock Holmes. And now, 94 years after the author’s death, the story is much the same: the deerstalker hat and pipe remain the internationally recognised emblems of the greatest detective who never lived. The boxing gloves of Rodney Stone, his other adventuring hero? Or the bushy beard of The Lost World explorer Professor George Challenger? Not so much. But Conan Doyle’s descendants have a longterm plan to correct this imbalance, and the Observer can reveal their latest weapon. Thriller writer Gareth Rubin is bringing out a new, officially approved Holmes story that will give equal billing to arch-villain Professor James Moriarty. The new novel unites the detecting skills of the talented sleuth with those of his greatest adversary, a criminal mastermind who runs an unseen network of thieves, murderers and blackmailers and yet never leaves a trace to link him to the scene. Putin has a ‘factchecking’ operation, and so do other dictators – but they use them to twist the truth | Maxim Alyukov

Asked by sociologists about his views on the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a Russian in his early 70s shifted the conversation to the massacre in Bucha – one of the worst atrocities committed by the Russian military in Ukraine. Evidence of Russian war crimes was fake, he said: “Take Busha or Bucha or wherever it may be. The way they filmed it, the way the bodies were arranged: it was clearly a fake!” Two things stand out from this. He parroted, word for word, statements of Russian propaganda about bodies being actors “arranged on the ground”, echoing the claims of War on Fakes, the Kremlin’s imitation of a factchecking organisation. Yet despite his certainty, he did not know anything about the town, to the extent that he could not pronounce its name correctly. Relying on an “anti-fake” outlet modelled on western factchecking, he was not interested in facts but rather in shielding Russia from accusations. This reaction is illustrative of a wider tendency. Once a new democratic initiative, factchecking is being creatively adopted by …
