Turnover up 15 per cent as Oxfordshire’s Lucy Group posts record results

Lucy Group, an Oxfordshire business specialising in power distribution, smart lighting and real estate, has posted record results for the year ended 31 December 2023. Turnover at the firm grew by 15 per cent to £359 million, while profit before tax increased by 69 per cent to £59 million. The group’s electrical businesses saw growth thanks to an improved product mix and increased proportion of smart solutions within the portfolio – as well as the calming of raw material and logistics costs post-Covid. As for real estate, Lucy Properties benefited from a favourable market for rental units, though Lucy Developments was impacted by factors affecting both the affordability and delivery of new builds. Amazing Lofts expands to Kent after hitting £4m turnover in two years

Three friends who started a loft boarding and insulation business with a rented van, storage unit and £5,000 of their own money have expanded their operation into Kent this month. Kevin Baker, Richard Blane and Neal Thorne founded Amazing Lofts in Banbury, Oxfordshire after quitting their jobs at the height of the cost-of-living crisis. They’ve now turned over £4 million in their first two years of trading. The business currently employs more than 35 full-time staff and is set to create another six local jobs after cutting the ribbon on a new depot near Orpington. The depot will serve as the firm’s south-east headquarters with capability to cover all of Kent and stretch as far west as Portsmouth. Amazing Lofts’ growth into Kent follows a poll of 2,000 homeowners by EDF Energy which revealed 30 per cent had never entered their loft. Bristol’s top 200 private businesses hit £33 bn turnover last year

Bristol’s top 200 privately-owned businesses achieved a landmark amount of revenue last year, increasing overall turnover by 33 per cent to reach £15.5 billion, according to new data from Grant Thornton UK LLP.  The business and financial adviser’s inaugural Bristol Limited report analysed private companies in the region and highlighted the city’s top 200 companies as measured by both annual turnover and EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation).    Despite the recent economic conditions, its analysis found that alongside the notable revenue growth, overall profits had also increased. The combined EBITDA of the city’s 200 most profitable privately-owned businesses rose by 7.4 per cent compared to 2022, totalling £712 million.  The energy company Ovo Group Ltd ranked number one in the report out of all 200 businesses by turnover. By profit, the leading business was identified as legal advisors TLT LLP.   Bristol’s business support services sector contributed the highest proportion of overall revenue compared to any other single sector. More from this theme Recent articles Schools in the largest multi-academy trusts have higher levels of teacher turnover than other schools, new research has found.   The Education Policy Institute’s latest research into effective school groups, published this morning, follows the release of a study last month on pupil inclusion and attainment.  Today’s report found that large trusts have the highest turnover rates, particularly so in secondary academies.  Analysis also suggested that academy trust tend to be in a better financial position that others, as they post healthier in-year balances. However the data is from 2019. Bathroom, kitchen and heating business Beyond Retail is targeting £100 million turnover by 2026 after acquiring a new warehouse at Bournemouth Airport’s Aviation Business Park. The company began life in 2011 selling taps online before first moving into the park around eight years ago. It’s since been propelled by the boom in DIY during the pandemic, as well as its investment in augmented and virtual reality technology to offer virtual showroom experiences to customers. Up until recently, Beyond Retail had grown to occupy six office and warehouse units at the Rigby Real Estate-owned Aviation Business Park, with a total footprint of almost 100,000 sq ft.
