Farmers used trash to grow crops in barren sand 1000 years ago

One thousand years ago, people along Israel’s Mediterranean coast dug deeply enclosed plots in the sand, filled them with 80,000 tonnes of trash and used the fertile soil that formed for farming, allowing them to produce crops that would otherwise fail on such harsh ground. This represents the oldest-known, large-scale plot-and-berm system that allows crop-growing in sand, putting it among multiple, less clearly dated sites across the globe. It might even be the origin of such oasis-like agricultural sites in deserts, some of which still exist today, says Joel Roskin at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Source link

North Korean balloon drops trash on South Korean president’s office

For the past few months, North Korea has been pestering its southern neighbor with seemingly sporadic swarms of balloons ferrying trash. The garbage has fallen on South Korean roads, buildings and cars — more of a nuisance than a major security threat incoming from a nuclear-armed rival. But on Wednesday, the rhetorical rubbish landed on the presidential compound in Seoul, delivering what was perhaps the most humiliating of the unwanted loads from the North so far and raising security concerns and questions about whether the situation would devolve. The trash that landed on the presidential office in central Seoul descended from a flock of hundreds of balloons sent from the North on Wednesday, South Korea’s semiofficial Yonhap News Agency reported, citing the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. The garbage was discovered on the grounds of the compound by the Presidential Security Service. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said as many as 300 balloons were detected by 4 p.m. local time. Wednesday’s tally was “expected to rise as additional balloons are floating in midair,” Yonhap reported. …

South Korean activists respond to North’s trash balloons with K-pop

SEOUL — After North Korea recently sent thousands of waste-filled balloons to South Korea, activists here responded with airborne deliveries that the regime up north might find even more despicable than garbage: K-pop and K-dramas. On Thursday, activists in South Korea set aloft 10 large balloons containing thousands of USB drives loaded with local music — including K-pop and trot songs, an old-school South Korean genre experiencing a modern revival — and “Winter Sonata,” a hugely popular romance TV series. Launched after midnight from Pocheon, a city about 30 miles northeast of Seoul, the balloons also carried 200,000 leaflets criticizing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as 2,000 U.S. $1 bills, according to a statement from the Fighters for Free North Korea (FFNK) group, which is led by North Korean defector Park Sang-hak. In a statement, FFNK accused North Korea of “indiscriminately dropping” 15 tons of waste on the South via balloons, calling it “a display of insult and embarrassment for our 50 million citizens.” The South Korean military said that the balloons …

Golden Bachelor’s Theresa Nist appears to mock tabloid photos of her taking out trash

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more The Golden Bachelor star Theresa Nist appeared to hilariously mock tabloid photos of her that have been circulating online. Nist – who recently announced her split from the show’s frontman, Gerry Turner – took to Instagram on Thursday to poke fun at the online coverage about her. She shared her post days after The US Sun captured photos of her taking out the trash at her home in New Jersey. Although Nist didn’t refer to the publication’s photos in the Instagram post, she did share multiple snaps of herself wearing a multi-coloured dress and holding a small white trash can. In the caption, she described the photographs in the way that a news publication would. “The Golden Bachelor star Theresa Nist was seen taking out her trash inside her office,” she wrote. “Theresa wore a short dress from Zara and a …

Let’s not trash recycling technologies that could end plastic waste

Let’s not trash recycling technologies that could end plastic waste

Andriy Onufriyenko/Getty Images In 1980, Disney World in Orlando, Florida, started work on a new way to generate power for the theme park, cutting its use of oil, the price of which had soared. The Solid Waste Energy Conversion Plant took trash, including plastic, and used a method called pyrolysis to turn it into combustible gases. It opened in 1982, but closed a year later, as the cost of running it mounted. Today, environmental campaigners are invoking the Disney story to trash the reputation of a suite of new technologies, collectively known as advanced recycling, which take plastic waste and convert it back into brand new plastic. Their argument is disingenuous. The failure of Disney’s plant had more to do with a subsequent fall in oil prices than technological or environmental problems. Pyrolysis has improved a lot since the 1980s. And in any case, Disney’s plant was designed to produce fuel, which isn’t classed as advanced recycling. As we report in our feature “The incredible new tech that can recycle all plastics, forever”, advanced recycling …

Woman found dead inside Sunland trash bin identified

Woman found dead inside Sunland trash bin identified

The Los Angeles County medical examiner on Friday identified a woman whose body was discovered inside a trash bin this week in Sunland. The woman was identified as 32-year-old Heather Hass. A cause of death has not been disclosed. Her body was discovered Tuesday morning in the 8500 block of Wentworth Street after officers responded to a call from a resident, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon arrival, the officers discovered the body inside the trash bin. Helicopter video from KTLA-TV at the time of the discovery showed police investigating near a closed black bin at a curb in the neighborhood. William Elliot, a Sunland resident, told KNBC-TV that someone dumped the trash bin onto his property. He said he moved the bin to the street without knowing what was inside it but called police when something seemed off. “It smells bad and it was zip-tied and very suspicious that the serial number was scratched off of it,” Elliot told the station. LeBron James says he’s the ‘G.O.A.T.’ after son calls him ‘trash’

LeBron James is not trash. He does not suck. The Lakers superstar proved those points, and then some, in a series of videos his youngest son, Bryce, posted to his Instagram stories on Thursday. The clips show James shooting hoops at night with both of his sons — Bronny, 19, who has declared for the NBA draft and entered the NCAA transfer portal but also could still return for his sophomore season at USC; and Bryce, 16, a high school junior who plays for Sierra Canyon — in the driveway at the family’s home in Brentwood. In the first two videos, James is shown attempting some long-range shots with Bryce calling out some good-natured trash talk from behind the camera. James was not rattled. “You trash!” Bryce yelled before one shot. Swish.
