Common European Data Spaces and Robust AI for Transparent Public Governance

Common European Data Spaces and Robust AI for Transparent Public Governance

CEDAR’s mission is to create high-value datasets to enhance and combine the existing CEDS and develop solutions for a more transparent public governance in Europe. CEDAR is a 36-month Horizon Europe-funded project, started in January 2024, that involves 31 partners with interdisciplinary knowledge and whose key goal is to promote transparent and accountable public governance in Europe. By sharing high-quality datasets, developing secure connectors for European data repositories, and employing innovative technologies for efficient big data management and analysis, CEDAR aims to promote better, evidence-based decision-making, combat corruption, and reduce fraud in public administration. What the CEDAR project will do CEDAR will identify, collect, fuse, harmonise, protect, and share new high-quality datasets. This will involve digitising data from public administration archives and generating synthetic data to improve real-world data quality. The project also aims to harmonise and standardise different public and private data sources into new unified datasets. Furthermore, it seeks to enable fair and secure data access to these datasets and integrate them with Common European Data Spaces available in Europe. CEDAR will develop …

These transparent earbuds by Nothing made my AirPods look and sound boring

These transparent earbuds by Nothing made my AirPods look and sound boring

Nina Raemont/ZDNET ZDNET’s key takeaways  For $99, the new Nothing Ear (a) earbuds offer clear sound and a thoughtful design.  Their affordability, comfort, and long battery life make them a great option for budget-conscious shoppers. Unfortunately, its middling noise-canceling tech doesn’t protect you from external noises.  Most of the audio tech on the market right now errs on the side of aesthetic caution. I’ve tested plenty of earbuds this year, and something I’ve noticed is that many manufacturers sacrifice style for functionality, opting for blacks, grays, and enough matte finishes to fit inside a therapist’s office — much to my chagrin. In the words of the late, great Andre Leon Talley, “it’s a famine of beauty” over here.   Also: Why I ditched my AirPods Pro for Nothing’s new transparent earbuds (and don’t regret it) So when Nothing sent me its new earbuds, I was excited to finally see a cool, fresh, and exciting design, and they’re worthy of a callout. I’ve been testing the new Nothing Ear (a) earbuds since launch, taking them on a ten-mile …

Poorer nations must be transparent over climate spending, says Cop29 leader | Cop29

Poorer nations must be transparent over climate spending, says Cop29 leader | Cop29

Poor countries must demonstrate clearer accounting and transparency to back up their calls for trillions of dollars of climate finance, the president of global climate negotiations has said. Mukhtar Babayev, the ecology minister of Azerbaijan, who will lead the Cop29 UN climate summit in November, urged governments in developing countries to draw up reports showing their progress on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and their spending on the climate crisis. “It’s very important to build this correct, good and honest trust between the parties,” he said in an interview in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. “It’s a very, very important step, the creation of a transparency mechanism between the countries.” At Cop29 in Baku, countries will be expected to come up with a new global goal on supplying climate finance to poorer countries, to help them cut their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of extreme weather. Some governments from the global south are calling for the sums to reach more than $1tn a year. These pledges are expected to be subject to bitter …

The New Hot Handset Is a Cute and Transparent Dumb Phone You Can’t Buy

The New Hot Handset Is a Cute and Transparent Dumb Phone You Can’t Buy

We’re only spending more and more time staring at our smartphones, and over the last few years, tech companies have tried to offer salves to this very problem they created. Apple and Google launched tools within their respective mobile operating systems to curb screen time. Devices like the Light Phone, designed to act as a secondary phone with limited features so you’re not staring at Instagram when you’re at a social gathering, are enjoying some popularity. This kind of digital detox mentality is also what’s behind a wave of AI-powered gadgets like the Humane Ai Pin, which promises to offload some smartphone-native tasks to voice controls on a screenless interface. The latest to hop on the trend is “The Boring Phone,” announced today ahead of Milan Design Week. The company manufacturing it is Human Mobile Devices (HMD), better known as the company making Nokia-branded phones since 2017 thanks to a licensing partnership. The Boring Phone is cute, transparent, and retrolicious. But it is not a phone you can buy. The Boring Phone is all retro …

Best gadgets I saw at MWC 2024: Smart rings, concept phones, transparent laptops

Kerry Wan/ZDNET We’re at the final stretch of this year’s Mobile World Congress, with just about every briefing scheduled, keynote presented, and live demo delivered. (Obligatorily, tapas eaten.) Also: The best MWC products coming to the US this year Whether you’ve been keeping up with the week-long event or just catching up, see below my curtain call of the very best gadgets and gizmos at this year’s Barcelona trade show, from wearables to laptops to smartphones, and, of course, plenty of concepts. I’ve also listed my honorable mentions (and a showstopper award) because the sheer volume of quality products from brands across the world this year was that astounding. Best phone: Honor Magic 6 Pro Kerry Wan/ZDNET Of all the phones I laid my hands on this week, no device left a bigger impression than Honor’s Magic 6 Pro. Beyond the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 12GB RAM/512GB storage configuration, 5,600mAh battery, and Dynamic Island-like “Magic Capsule” interface that morphs background applications (timer, music player, voice recorder, etc.) into the hole-punch camera, Honor has integrated some …

Lenovo transparent screen and AI devices unveiled at MWC 2024

Lenovo transparent screen and AI devices unveiled at MWC 2024

At the latest Mobile World Congress, Lenovo made headlines with its unveiling of a series of cutting-edge devices that are powered by artificial intelligence. The event, which is a hotspot for tech enthusiasts and industry professionals, was the perfect stage for Lenovo to demonstrate how they are pushing the boundaries of technology. Yuanqing Yang, the company’s Chairman and CEO, took the opportunity to highlight Lenovo’s dedication to integrating AI into their products while also focusing on sustainability. The products they introduced are set to change the way we interact with our devices, making our digital experiences more intuitive and efficient. One of the most talked-about reveals was the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept. This device is unlike anything currently on the market, featuring a 17.3-inch Micro-LED screen that is transparent. This innovative design allows users to merge their digital workspace with their physical environment, opening up new possibilities for collaboration and creative work. The transparent screen is a bold step forward and could redefine how we use laptops in the future. Lenovo AI MWC …

Lenovo’s Project Crystal Is a Concept Laptop With a Transparent Display

Lenovo’s Project Crystal Is a Concept Laptop With a Transparent Display

Transparent TVs were all the rage at CES 2024, and a little more than a month later, we’re getting our first glimpse at a transparent laptop. At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Lenovo showed off Project Crystal, a complete proof-of-concept laptop that will never see the light of day as a real product, but demonstrates what the see-through technology will look like on a portable PC. This hefty Windows 11 machine has a 17.3-inch Micro-LED transparent display, the same technology Samsung used to show off its transparent TV concept earlier this year. However, Lenovo did not share who the manufacturer of the display was on Project Crystal. The screen on the concept is borderless, protected by Gorilla Glass on the front and back, and the glass edges are a bit sharp, but the vision for the tech is at least realized. For this concept, Lenovo also decided to show off what a transparent, digital keyboard would look like. Unfortunately, you can’t see the inner components of the laptop or anything like that. It’s just a …

I went hands-on with Lenovo’s transparent laptop at MWC, and its surprisingly functional

Max Buondonno/ZDNET On a snowy day in New York City, I saw the future of laptops. Well, at least what science fiction and, oddly enough, Nickelodeon have suggested are the future of laptops. Also: Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold is the most bizarre, fun, and expensive laptop I’ve ever tested At MWC 2024, Lenovo is showcasing a concept ThinkBook at its booth with one very neat trick. We saw transparent displays hit the mainstream back at CES in January when LG and Samsung both unveiled TVs using the technology. Now, Lenovo has incorporated it into a laptop, making it one of the coolest ones I’ve ever seen (even outpacing Lenovo’s own ThinkPad X1 Fold) and one of the first laptops to have a display of this caliber. I spent some time with the concept device a couple of weeks before MWC in New York, and let me tell you, my jaw dropped several times. Max Buondonno/ZDNET The 17.3-inch Micro-LED display looks like a piece of clear glass with Windows icons floating in it. Moving the cursor feels …
