Global first: Scientists confirm the existence of quantum tornadoes

Physicists have uncovered a new quantum phenomenon, proving for the first time that electrons can form vortex-like structures in momentum space. This breakthrough, led by researchers at the Universities of Würzburg and Dresden, sheds light on how electrons behave in topological semimetals and may pave the way for energy-efficient quantum technologies. Mapping Quantum Tornadoes in Momentum Space Understanding how electrons move in materials is central to modern physics. Traditional research focuses on position space, where familiar vortex structures appear in fluids, superfluids, and superconductors. (CREDIT: Physical Review X) However, momentum space—which describes electron behavior in terms of energy and movement direction—has remained largely unexplored for such phenomena. Scientists have long theorized that electrons could form vortex-like patterns in momentum space, but until now, experimental confirmation was missing. Using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (SX-ARPES), researchers mapped the three-dimensional momentum space of tantalum arsenide (TaAs), a quantum semimetal known for hosting exotic electronic states. Their findings, published in the journal Physical …

1 dead, multiple injured as powerful storms, possible tornadoes barrel across the U.S.

One person was killed and others were injured after a suspected tornado struck the Columbia, Tennessee, area south of Nashville on Wednesday, authorities said. Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder said in a statement that one person died in the storms that hit near the community of around 41,000. “The city of Columbia did appear to avoid the worst of the storm in the city limits but very close by was a different story,” he wrote on social media. Maury Regional Health said it had received five patients, including the person who died. One of the injured was in serious condition and three suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, the hospital in Columbia said. “This is a developing situation with multiple agencies responding,” Maury Regional Health spokesperson Rita Thompson said. The possible tornado that touched down at around 5:55 p.m. tracked for approximately two miles, Maury County Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard Schatz told reporters Wednesday night. “Multiple houses have been completely destroyed,” he said. He said there was one death and multiple injuries, but did not …

‘Twisters’ trailer: Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones chase gnarly tornadoes

In 1996, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton brought storm-chasing to the big screen with Twister. Now, Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Glen Powell (Hit Man) take up their disaster flick mantle in sequel Twisters, directed by Minari‘s Lee Isaac Chung. SEE ALSO: Summer Movie Preview: Every film you oughta know The film centers on former storm chaser Kate (Edgar-Jones), who’s haunted by a traumatic tornado encounter from her past. Her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos, Hamilton) brings her back to the field to test a groundbreaking new tracking system, but these scientific powerhouses soon cross paths — and butt heads — with social media-famous storm chaser Tyler (Powell). Differences in ideologies will be the least of their worries as storm season gets underway. The latest Twisters trailer promises meteorological mayhem like you’ve never seen before: twin tornadoes, fire tornadoes, tornadoes with… fireworks inside them? Will our intrepid crew be able to ride out the storm? Twisters hits theaters July 19. Source link

Michigan tornadoes trap workers in building, wipe out mobile home park

Severe weather that has been uprooting Plains states for weeks turned its attention to Michigan on Tuesday, trapping workers and wiping out a mobile home park, officials said. Portage Mayor Patricia M. Randall said in a statement that her city was struck by two tornadoes Tuesday, with no reports of injuries or death so far. One of the vortexes ripped off the side of a massive FedEx facility, trapping about 50 workers as first responders hoped to clear live electrical wires blocking their safe exit, Kalamazoo County spokesperson Taylor Koopman said by email. “The FedEx building in Portage sustained significant damage and is still an active scene,” she said. At the Sulphur High School gym, where families took cover from the storm, Jackalyn Wright said she and her family heard what sounded like a helicopter as the tornado touched down over them. Chad Smith, 43, said people ran into the gym as the wind picked up. The rain started coming faster and the doors slammed shut. “Just give me a beer and a lawn chair and I will sit outside and watch it,” Mr Smith said. Instead, he took cover. Residents in other states were also digging out from storm damage. A tornado in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, demolished homes and businesses on Saturday as it moved for miles through farmland and into subdivisions, then slammed an Iowa town. The tornado damage began on Friday afternoon near Lincoln, Nebraska. An industrial building in Lancaster County was hit, causing it to collapse with 70 people inside. Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated, and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said. One or possibly two tornadoes then spent around an hour creeping toward Omaha, leaving behind damage consistent with an EF3 twister, …

Campus tensions rise over Gaza protests, tornadoes and storms devastate the Midwest: Weekend Rundown

Campus tensions rise over Gaza protests, tornadoes and storms devastate the Midwest: Weekend Rundown

Campus protests over Gaza grow Pro-Palestinian demonstrations continued at colleges across the U.S. this weekend, with tensions bubbling on some campuses. Northeastern University officials said about 100 people were detained at a protest Saturday morning, while Columbia University said it banned a protest leader after a video resurfaced that showed the student saying Zionists “don’t deserve to live.” There has also been a rise in antisemitic incidents on campuses since Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Some Jewish leaders, lawmakers and students are displeased that the Biden administration isn’t showing more resolve in stamping out the antisemitic harassment.
