The latest advice is to behave like a toddler. Is this the secret to happiness? | Emma Beddington

The latest advice is to behave like a toddler. Is this the secret to happiness? | Emma Beddington

What would really make you happy? More money, more fulfilling work, more time to spend with your loved ones? All good, but have you considered a box of raisins, a few episodes of Bluey and a nap? That’s what Dr Hasan Merali is suggesting (well, sort of). He’s the author of Sleep Well, Take Risks, Squish the Peas: Secrets from the Science of Toddlers for a Happier, More Successful Way of Life and man, am I torn by his thesis that the toddler life philosophy offers valuable adult wellbeing lessons. There is plenty to admire in the toddler Weltanschauung. In a New York Times article on his book, Merali highlights their talent for positive self-talk and insatiably asking questions. So many questions (up to 107 an hour, according to a study he quotes), from “Why?” until your brain liquefies to frank curiosity about a stranger’s nasal hair. But it’s true, there is value in a candid lack of embarrassment: a high-powered scientist I talked to recently said that her seniority let her shamelessly ask “basic” …

Toddler Helps Save Her Baby Brother While The Dad Was Distracted

After a toddler had to come to the rescue as her baby brother’s stroller careened toward a busy street, her dad, chatting with a neighbor nearby, was oblivious to it all.  A toddler helped save her baby brother while her dad distractedly chatted with the neighbors.  In the r/offmychest post, which was reposted to r/OhNoConsequences, a 25-year-old mom explained how her husband has always had trouble paying attention, as he deals with ADHD, but she was appalled by how much he was able to tune out on a day that almost cost his son’s life.  One day, her husband and kids were outside and she was inside folding clothes when she heard her daughter frightfully cry for help from outside. Photo: A’s Images / Canva Pro The mom rushed outside, immediately knowing something was wrong. “What I saw made my blood run cold — our newborn in his stroller, careening toward the busy street. I screamed and ran to him, barely stopping the stroller in time,” she said. “My baby girl’s hands and knees were scratched up …

Heavy Rains Kill 7 in Brazil; Toddler Rescued After 16 Hours Under Mud

PETROPOLIS, Brazil —  Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro state killed at least seven people, Brazilian authorities said Saturday, while a 4-year-old girl was rescued after more than 16 hours under mud. The girl was pulled out alive in the city of Petropolis, 69 kilometers (43 miles) north of Rio. Rescue teams had to stop their work Friday night due to the risks of new landslides in the region. The girl’s father died as a house was knocked to the ground. She survived because he protected her with his body, members of rescue teams said. Three more people died in the same place. Mayors and Governor Claudio Castro had warned residents of potential problems for the weekend since Thursday. Firefighters struggled to reach those hit by heavy rains, many of them residents of long endangered areas. Sniffing dogs were also part of the rescue efforts. How To Stop Your Toddler Hitting You

How To Stop Your Toddler Hitting You

The time has finally come where your infant has become a full-fledged toddler with their own opinions and little personality. But, although most of the time they’re extremely entertaining and hilarious, they’ve just discovered they can hit you. And you know what, I’m not ashamed to say it actually hurts when they hit! Those little hands can do some damage. So, what are you meant to do? Why have they suddenly started hitting? Why is my toddler hitting me? Well, we spoke to Rachel Melville-Thomas, Child Psychotherapist and spokesperson for the Association of Child Psychotherapists to understand what exactly is going on in their little brains. By the age of two, toddlers have better motor control than they once did. Rachel explains that toddler brains are gut driven, impulsive and too often put strong feelings straight into action. She says because of this, toddlers often communicate by “getting under your skin” which in turn can make us feel angry too. Helene Malyutina, CEO and co-founder of Fams, a parenting app, explained: “For toddlers it is …

South Yorkshire Police said the dog turned on the boy when he tried to climb on it. The little boy was taken to hospital where he required surgery after being bitten on the face. The police seized the dog and confirmed it will stay in kennels as they investigate what happened. Chief inspector, Emma Cheney, said the attack shows how dangerous this breed of dog can be. She warned parents to keep their children safe. “This family have acknowledged the change in legislation around the XL Bully and registered their dog, but this doesn’t remove the danger that these dogs pose and why the ban has come into place “All dogs can be aggressive; they are animals, but some dogs have greater capability to cause harm due to their size and strength. Children should never be unsupervised when with dogs, even …
