BMA strikes cause over one hundred thousand appointments and procedures to be postponed | UK | News

Patients continue to “bear the brunt of industrial action”, health experts have said. More than 113,000 operations, procedures and appointments were postponed due to the longest walkout in the history of the NHS, according to figures. Junior doctors in England staged a six-day walkout from January 3 to January 9. And NHS England data shows it led to 113,779 inpatient and outpatient appointments being rescheduled. Some 1.33 million have now been cancelled since December 2022. During the latest walkout in England some 25,446 staff were absent at the peak of the action on January 3, NHS England said. They are calling for a 35% pay rise. Service leaders have warned the impact of the strikes could last for months. NHS England’s national medical director Professor Sir Stephen Powis said: “The longest strike in NHS history has led to unprecedented disruption for patients and their families.” Louise Ansari, chief executive at Healthwatch England, said: “These figures are a stark reminder it is patients bearing the brunt of the industrial action”. Serbian police fire teargas as thousand protest over ‘unfair’ elections | Serbia

Police fired teargas as thousands gathered in Belgrade to demand the annulment of parliamentary and local elections a week ago that international observers said were unfair. The populist ruling Serbian Progressive party (SNS) won 46.72% of the votes in snap parliamentary elections last weekend, according to state election commission preliminary results. An international monitoring mission on Monday said the SNS gained an unfair advantage through media bias, the improper influence of President Aleksandar Vučić and voting irregularities such as vote buying. Vučić said on Sunday that the claims were lies promoted by the political opposition. He also suggested the unrest was instigated from abroad. Addressing the nation during the protest outside Belgrade town hall, he called the demonstrators “thugs” who would not succeed in destabilising the state and said: “This is not a revolution.” Associated Press reported that on Sunday night shielded riot police barricaded themselves inside Belgrade’s town hall, firing teargas as protesters broke windows on the entrance of the downtown building. There were no immediate reports of injuries. An opposition supporter tries to …

The mugshot that launched a thousand memes

The mugshot that launched a thousand memes

Memes can happen in the blink of an eye, like a Jeopardy! contestant who accidentally makes a sexual innuendo under the pressure of stage lights, or a kid who randomly gets interviewed on a playground and professes his undying love for America’s most plentiful crop, corn. But as soon as we knew former President Donald Trump would be processed at Fulton County Jail for his fourth indictment, we knew that the resulting mugshot would be all over the place for years to come, from novelty t-shirt stands to our hypothetical future childrens’ history textbooks. We waited for it, knowing that as soon as the image was released to the public, it would become unavoidable. “This will break Etsy,” Jesse Case wrote in a now-viral tweet (or X post, whatever). And sure enough, less than twenty four hours after Trump’s mugshot was released, Etsy already turns up 5,290 results to the search “trump mugshot.” Even the former president himself has already set up an extensive merch store with t-shirts, posters, mugs and stickers featuring the photo, …

Every Rising Sun by Jamila Ahmed review – a feminist take on One Thousand and One Nights | Fiction

Every creative artist knows what it is to work under a deadline, and the harshest deadline of all is presented by one’s own mortality. The quick-witted storyteller of Arabian Nights – or One Thousand and One Nights, which is preferred because several stories originated from beyond the Arab world – responded with creative ingenuity to just that predicament. It has probably inspired more translations, retellings and adaptations across cultures, generations and genres than any other text. It has influenced the works of Leo Tolstoy and Jorge Luis Borges, Marcel Proust and Salman Rushdie, Angela Carter and AS Byatt, and many more beyond the western canon. Each new version seeks to do something different for its readership in terms of outright entertainment, literary craft, aesthetic pleasure and historical revisionism. Some succeed on some of those levels, but it is rare to find a rendition that, quite breathtakingly, comes close to doing it all. The last such work was a translation by Yasmin Seale – the only female translator of this text – who finally gave us …
