11 Best Tents (2024): Backpacking, Family, and Ultralight

11 Best Tents (2024): Backpacking, Family, and Ultralight

There are hundreds of tents out there. If none of our top picks quite works for you, here are a few things to consider while doing your own research. Know how you plan to use your tent. Are you a car camper? Backpacker? Bike packer? All of the above? If you’re primarily headed to established campgrounds there’s no need for an expensive ultralight tent. By the same token, if you’re not happy until the trail head is 20 miles behind you, it might be worth sacrificing living space to save weight. The unfortunate truth is that there are very few tents that work well in the backcountry and the campground. It’s often worth buying a good backcountry tent and something cheap for campgrounds to spare your expensive tent the added wear and tear. Keep the weather in mind. “Three-season” or “four-season” usually refers to how much ventilation (that is, mesh) the tent has. A three-season tent will offer better ventilation but will have a harder time retaining heat. For most people, a three-season tent is …

In Rafah, we sit in flimsy tents as the bombs fall. There is no escape: we can only wait for the worst | Bahzad Al-Akhras

In Rafah, we sit in flimsy tents as the bombs fall. There is no escape: we can only wait for the worst | Bahzad Al-Akhras

Bahzad Al-Akhras I’m a doctor and psychiatrist, and before the war in Gaza, my days followed a reliable routine. I would go to work in the clinic, visit my friends and spend time with my family. I lived a normal life. Now, my family and I are refugees in Rafah, after the Israeli army ordered us to leave our home in Khan Younis. We are living in the worst conditions imaginable. We spend our days waiting. We wait in queues for two or three gallons of drinkable water, or for food or plain flour to make bread over a fire, after months without electricity. In the last few days, as we heard that Israel was preparing for a ground invasion in Rafah, we knew that there was nowhere else for us to go. Israel claims it will evacuate civilians, but how can we believe that when there seems to be no plan and we have repeatedly seen what they have done before? All we can do – all 1.4 million of us – is wait …

Solar Tents and Windows, Battery on Wheels: Energy Tech From CES 2024

Solar Tents and Windows, Battery on Wheels: Energy Tech From CES 2024

The world convened at CES 2024 this past week to get its first look at the tech that could be coming to your home in the near future. Most, if not all, of the tech on display — from the best of show to the wacky to the cutting edge — had one thing in common: electricity. While electricity keeps all your tech running, it’s also more of a focus itself this year. There were more than enough solar-powered gadgets, portable power stations and visions for the future of energy to go around. If 2024 is the year you take control of your home’s electricity, here’s the tech we saw at CES that might help you do it. A whole home backup battery you can take with you EcoFlow had the Delta Pro Ultra loaded up on a cart at CES so you could wheel it around. It’s surprisingly easy to move a battery that weighs nearly 200 pounds. Jon Reed/CNET The variety of backup batteries has exploded over the last few years. Other companies have introduced …

Home Office buys tents to house asylum seekers | Immigration and asylum

Tents could be used to house up to 2,000 migrants on disused military sites next month, under plans drawn up by the home secretary, Suella Braverman, in an effort to avoid accommodating asylum seekers in hotels. The Home Office bought the marquees in recent days ahead of an expected rise in small boat crossings in August, despite warnings by some in government that housing asylum seekers in tents could trigger legal challenges based on inhumane treatment. More than 14,000 people have made unauthorised crossings already this year, despite Rishi Sunak’s vow to “stop the boats”, and the summer is expected to be the busiest time for crossings. Last year, a record 47,755 people arrived in the UK by small boats, with 51% of the arrivals taking place in August, September and October. Last autumn, the Home Office erected a number of temporary marquees at the Manston processing centre, in the grounds of a former army barracks, with Home Office employees later reporting people slept on mats on the floor in overcrowded conditions and were shut …
