Tennessee Family Builds Levees to Save House From Flooding

Tennessee Family Builds Levees to Save House From Flooding

A family in western Tennessee was highly prepared for the recent flooding that hit parts of the state in early April as their home was protected by levees. Aerial footage filmed by Randy Moore shows the home surrounded by high floodwaters in Bogota and Ridgely, Tennessee, on Tuesday, April 8. The house, located in Ridgely, appears untouched by the flooding due to levees constructed in a rectangle around the property. A photo of the house was posted on Facebook, where people commented saying they knew the family. According to some commenters, the family who built the levees had done so before in times of flooding. Aside from the one house, Moore’s other footage shows flooding in Bogota, where more than 100 people were rescued from floodwaters, according to a local news report. In the hills of Tennessee, a developer hopes to offer blue state Christians a refuge

Whitleyville, Tenn. (RNS) — On a sunny morning in mid-February, Josh Abbotoy, who describes himself as a “conservative Christian who does land deals,” drove a 20-year-old Lexus LX470 around a former farm, crossing a creek, squeezing by a run-down barn and driving along one of the farm’s roads in hopes of showing off the view from one of the ridgetops. But there had been too much rain and the road was muddy, so he parked and hopped out for a 10-minute walk up to the ridgetop, admiring the red cedars and Bois d’Arc trees that line the hillsides. At the top of the ridge, Abbotoy surveyed the view of the green fields and rolling hills while painting a picture of a community filled with lovely homes and families, looking down over wide fields and a stately church. A month earlier, RidgeRunner, a real estate company Abbotoy runs, announced it had bought the 448-acre farm, with hopes of developing it into an “agrihood” — with about 30 estate-style homes dotting the farm’s hillsides. “The fields will …

Former Corrections Officer Sentenced to 4 Years for Using Excessive Force

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A former Tennessee Department of Corrections officer has been sentenced to four years in prison for using excessive force on an inmate and trying to cover it up, the Justice Department said. Javian Griffin, 38, received the sentence Monday, the agency said in a statement. The former tactical officer at Northwest Correctional Complex pleaded guilty in October to punching the inmate in the head without justification and breaking his jaw. The inmate did not resist or pose a threat and Griffin wrote a false report about it, court documents said. “No correctional officer is above the law,” U.S. Attorney Kevin G. Ritz said. “This office’s National Security and Civil Rights Unit will continue to prioritize the prosecution of public employees who violate the civil rights of others.” A co-defendant was sentenced in February to 15 months in prison for assisting with the cover-up by writing a false report, the agency said. Pope Francis Appoints New Bishop in Tennessee After Former Bishop’s Resignation Under Pressure

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Pope Francis has appointed Reverend James Mark Beckman as Bishop of Knoxville, Tennessee, almost a year after the previous bishop resigned under pressure following claims he mishandled sex abuse allegations. The Vatican announced the appointment in its Tuesday noon bulletin. As is usual, the announcement made no mention of his predecessor or the circumstances under which he left the post. Bishop-elect Beckman is a priest of the Diocese of Nashville where he has served as pastor of Saint Henry parish since 2015, according to the announcement. He earned his master’s degree in religious studies from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium in 1989 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1990 for the Diocese of Nashville. Pope Francis accepted Bishop Richard Stika’s resignation last June, closing a turbulent chapter for the southern U.S. diocese that was marked by a remarkable revolt by some of its priests. They accused Stika of abusing his authority during his 14 years as bishop of Knoxville and protecting a seminarian accused of sexual misconduct. They …

This involves a recent outpouring at the University of Tennessee on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, CBN reports. Over 8,000 students gathered at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, TN, which saw hundreds of students respond, and 150 get water baptized. This was the last event of the year for the semester, and it was obvious many students were impacted. “We have been waiting for a move like this all school year,” a student told FOX & Friends. “At the finale of the event we were singing ‘Speak the Name of Jesus’ and students just rushed to the front.
