Time for moderation? | TechCrunch

Welcome to the TechCrunch Exchange, a weekly startups-and-markets newsletter. It’s inspired by the daily TechCrunch+ column where it gets its name. Want it in your inbox every Saturday? Sign up here. Does freight logistics need a one-stop shop? That’s Flexport’s take, and maybe that’s one of the reasons why Convoy didn’t work out; however, it might be too early for this approach in Latin America. On a different note, investors still seem willing to support startups that help people drink less alcohol, as long as there’s AI involved. By the way, this newsletter will be taking a break next week, but I’ll be back December 2.— Anna Lessons to learn? Entrepreneurs often write postmortems after shutting down or selling their companies, but it is less common for these lessons to be drawn by their acquirers as well. Yet, that’s what happened to Convoy, a failed digital freight unicorn whose tech backbone — including a few team members — is being acquired by Flexport. In a memo quoted by FreightWaves, Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen made it …

OpenAI hosts a dev day, TechCrunch reviews the M3 iMac and MacBook Pro, and Bumble gets a new CEO

Hey, folks, and welcome to Week in Review (WiR), TechCrunch’s newsletter covering the past week (or so) in tech industry happenings. This week marked OpenAI’s first-ever dev conference, where the Microsoft-backed AI startup announced a host of new products. But that was far from the only item of note. In this edition of WiR, we spotlight Brian’s review of the 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Air and M3 iMac 24-inch; Mozilla betting on a decentralized social networking future; Ford shuttering a company that was building an app for plumbers, electricians and other trades; and Tim Cook’s thoughts on generative AI. Also on the agenda is WeWork officially filing for bankruptcy, Bumble getting a new CEO, and the spectacular failure of EV startup Arrival. It’s a lot to get through, as always — so we won’t delay. But first, a reminder to sign up here to receive WiR in your inbox every Saturday if you haven’t already done so. So long, Twitter Circles | TechCrunch

If tic-tac-toe has taught us anything, it’s that Xs and circles cannot peacefully coexist. The app formerly known as Twitter, X, has shut down the Circles feature, which allowed users to post to a small, exclusive audience. Like an Instagram Close Friends story, Circles — née Twitter Circles — offered a more intimate social media experience. In other words, you could overshare about your life to an audience of friends only, rather than the whole internet. And isn’t one of the greatest joys of the internet to emotionally shitpost without worrying about the consequences? But, as the whims of the Circle reminded us, nothing we say on the internet is ever actually free from consequence. The feature worked almost all of the time. Almost. And anything less than 100% efficacy is not ideal for a feature that people used to share private thoughts with trusted friends. As early as February, some users reported that their Circle tweets were reaching a wider audience than they were supposed to. These glitches showed up again in April, and …

Max Q: Psyche(d) | TechCrunch

Hello and welcome back to Max Q! In this issue: SpaceX launches NASA asteroid mission News from Relativity Space and more Godspeed, Psyche. The large NASA spacecraft is officially en route to a metal-rich asteroid (also named Psyche) after taking off on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket last week. The mission marked the first time a NASA science mission has used SpaceX’s larger rocket for a launch. Psyche (the spacecraft) will now embark on a six-year, 2.2 billion-mile journey to Psyche (the asteroid), which sits in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Before the spacecraft reaches its target, it will conduct a technology demonstration of the Deep Space Optical Communications experiment. If successful, it would be the first time optical communications are demonstrated beyond the Earth-moon system. A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket with the Psyche spacecraft onboard is launched from Launch Complex 39A, Friday, October 13, 2023, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Founders, are events useful? | TechCrunch

Welcome to Startups Weekly. Sign up here to get it in your inbox every Friday. A few months ago, Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, tweeted that if he could go back in time and do one thing differently when he was building Reddit, he would have spent significantly less time attending events. Personally I have a different experience — I always regret getting on a plane (or in an Uber, for that matter) to go to an event. However, as I’m traveling back, I’ve never regretted it: There’s always something magical that comes out of going to an event, in my experience. Our TC+ team is not interested in anecdotes, however: neither mine nor Alexis’. So, like the data-driven journalists they are, they surveyed more than 50 founders, trying to figure out whether attending events still makes sense in 2023. Spoiler alert: There isn’t a real consensus, but there are some really good pros and cons. The article is well worth a read, to figure out in which circumstances you can expect a decent …

VidCon is still kickin’ | TechCrunch

VidCon is a weird event. Over the last 13 years, the event has transitioned from just a fan convention to an industry-forward gathering where you’ll mingle with venture capitalists and Hatsune Miku cosplayers alike. Now, after pulling off its first ever east coast event, VidCon will return to Anaheim, California on June 26-29, 2024. VidCon is the premiere event for online creators, founded by two legendary creators themselves, John and Hank Green. The brothers sold VidCon to Paramount in 2018, but the conference’s events were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic. Still, attendance is on the rise. The flagship event in Anaheim drew 55,000 attendees this year, up 10 percent from the previous year. When VidCon announced its first attempt at an east coast gathering in Baltimore, reception was mixed — it’s hard to imagine such a monstrously large event taking place in a satellite location, let alone one that isn’t known for its entertainment industries. As expected, VidCon Baltimore turned out to be significantly smaller than the Anaheim event. While …

TechCrunch+ Roundup: AI investor survey, calculating TAM, inside the FTX trial

Follow-on financing is harder to raise these days, which means founders must watch their spending like hawks while keeping the peace with their investors like sweet, cooing doves. TechCrunch+ Roundup: SBF’s trial opens, Series A tips, how to roll out AI features

Follow-on financing has become harder to raise, which leaves startups striving for a Series A in a real bind.
