Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom to be extradited to US after losing 12-year legal fight | Science & Tech News

Kim Dotcom, who founded the globally popular file-sharing site Megaupload, will be extradited to the US from New Zealand. German-born Dotcom, who has New Zealand residency, has been fighting extradition since 2012 following an FBI-ordered raid on his Auckland mansion. He is charged with copyright infringement, money laundering and racketeering. US authorities say Dotcom – born Kim Schmitz – and three other Megaupload executives cost film studios and record companies more than $500m (£388m) by encouraging paying users to store and share copyrighted material. This generated more than $175m (£136m) in revenue for the now-defunct website, according to authorities. In a post on social media website X, Dotcom said: “The obedient US colony in the South Pacific just decided to extradite me for what users uploaded to Megaupload.” He also shared a headline about the extradition, writing: “Oops, don’t worry, I have a plan.” New Zealand’s justice minister Paul Goldsmith signed the extradition order for Dotcom. Mark Zuckerberg reveals giant teal statue of wife Priscilla Chan in photo posted to Instagram | Science & Tech News

Meta founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has revealed a giant, teal statue of his wife. Posting a picture of the commissioned artwork on Instagram, the tech mogul said: “Bringing back the Roman tradition of making sculptures of your wife.” The statue shows a sculpted silver piece of material flowing behind the rendering of Ms Chan and appears to be in a garden. His wife, philanthropist Priscilla Chan, is seen in the photo sipping out of a mug. She commented on her husband’s Instagram post, saying, “The more of me the better?” with a heart emoji. Image: Pic: @zuck / Instagram The statue was created by Daniel Arsham, a New York artist whose work has appeared all over the world and can currently be seen in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield. The replies to Zuckerberg’s post were largely positive, with one user commenting: “Wife guy level: Advanced.” Read more tech news:Robotaxis frustrate sleepless residents with constant honkingGrieving parents tell Ofcom to ‘step up’Love Island star on the impact of trolling “Husbands everywhere are shaking,” …

Robotaxis frustrate sleepless residents with constant honking | Science & Tech News

The world’s only self-driving taxi company has been forced to fix a fleet of cars after residents complained about their constant honking. Waymo’s autonomous cars arrived in a car park in San Francisco, California, a few weeks ago, where they wait between jobs. However, the cars were installed with an update that made them beep their horns whenever another car reversed close to them. Social media platform Bluesky says it has seen a surge in signups in the United Kingdom in recent days. Weight-loss jab Wegovy may help people stop smoking, researchers suggest | Science & Tech News

The weight-loss jab Wegovy may help people quit smoking, researchers suggest. Smokers with type 2 diabetes who took semaglutide were less likely to need medical care linked to their smoking, a study found. Researchers said the findings indicate the drug, sold under the brand name Wegovy, should be investigated for its use in helping people stop smoking. Compared to seven other diabetes medications, using semaglutide was associated with a lower risk for medical care related to tobacco addiction (tobacco use disorder – TUD), the study found. Those who used the drug were less likely to be diagnosed with TUD, be prescribed medication to stop smoking or be given smoking cessation counselling. In the journal Annals of Internal Medicine the researchers said: “Semaglutide was associated with reduced smoking cessation medication prescriptions and counselling. “Similar findings were observed in patients with and without a diagnosis of obesity.” They added: “These findings suggest the need for clinical trials to evaluate semaglutide’s potential for TUD treatment.” Read more:Jab approved for use in preventing heart attacks and strokesWhat are weight …

Fusobacterium: Bacteria commonly found in mouth can make some cancer cells ‘melt’, say scientists | Science & Tech News

A common type of bacteria has been found to make some cancers “melt”, according to researchers. People who had fusobacterium in their head and neck cancers had “much better outcomes” – with scientists saying they were “brutally surprised” at the findings. The bacteria is commonly found in the mouth, and in lab studies led to a 70-99% reduction in viable cancer cells when left in petri dishes for a few days. Researchers also analysed 155 patients with head and neck cancer from the Cancer Genome Atlas database and found a 65% reduction in risk of death where fusobacterium was detected. The apparent benefit of fusobacterium was a surprise as previous research has linked it to the progression of bowel cancer. NHS shingles vaccine targeting herpes zoster virus could significantly delay onset of dementia, study suggests | Science & Tech News

A vaccine being used by the NHS to prevent shingles could also significantly delay the onset of dementia, according to new research that has left scientists baffled. The study on more than 200,000 older people shows those who were given the ‘recombinant’ vaccine Shingrix were diagnosed with dementia an average of 164 days later than those given an older-style jab. The effect was as pronounced as the first new drugs for Alzheimer’s disease, which are currently awaiting approval by UK medicines regulators. The scientists behind the study say they don’t know what the biological mechanism is for the effect, but it is highly statistically significant. “It is correlation, not causation,” said one. Previous studies have hinted the shingles vaccine may also have an effect on dementia, but this is by far the most significant research to date. The researchers seized on an opportunity for what they called a “natural experiment”. In 2017, the United States switched almost overnight from using a live vaccine called Zostavax to Shingrix, which is made using genetic techniques. Both target …

Wegovy: Weight-loss jab approved for use in preventing heart attacks and strokes in UK | Science & Tech News

A weight-loss jab has been approved by the UK’s medicines regulator for use in preventing heart attacks and strokes in overweight or obese adults. Wegovy, which is the brand name for the drug semaglutide, had already got the green light for weight management in those with obesity. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now allowed it to be used in helping overweight or obese people cut their risk of heart problems. Wegovy is the first weight-loss medication to be approved in the UK as a preventative method for “established cardiovascular disease”. It can be prescribed to people who have a body mass index (BMI) score of 27 or above and have already been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease – a term which describes conditions relating to the heart or blood vessels. Wegovy, made by Novo Nordisk, typically works by making people feel fuller and less hungry. It does so by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone which is used in regulating blood sugar levels and enhancing insulin secretion. This reduces the amount of glucose, or …

What Kamala Harris has said about AI, tech regulation, and more

With President Joe Biden dropping out of the race, Vice President Kamala Harris may become the Democrats’ new nominee. In announcing his plans, Biden offered his “full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” while Harris said her “intention is to win and earn this nomination.” That said, it’s not clear whether other Democratic politicians will challenge her for the nomination at an open convention, or through some other selection process. If Harris is selected, the Democrats will have a presidential nominee with roots in the Bay Area — she was born in Oakland — and a long relationship with the tech industry. (Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance is also deeply connected to Silicon Valley.) She was San Francisco’s district attorney, then California’s attorney general, before being elected to the Senate in 2016. VCs like John Doerr and Ron Conway were among her early supporters, and as a presidential candidate, she was quickly endorsed by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Other industry figures, including Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, …
