Bugcrowd snaps up $102M for a ‘bug bounty’ security platform that taps 500K+ hackers

Bugcrowd — the startup that taps into a database of half a million hackers to help organizations like OpenAI and the U.S. government set up and run bug bounty programs, cash rewards to freelancers who can identify bugs and vulnerabilities in their code — has picked up a big cash award of its own to grow its business further: an equity round of $102 million. General Catalyst is leading the investment, with previous backers Rally Ventures and Costanoa Ventures also participating. Bugcrowd has raised over $180 million to date, and while valuation is not being disclosed, CEO Dave Gerry said in an interview it is “significantly up” on its last round back in 2020, a $30 million Series D. As a point of comparison, one of the startup’s bigger competitors, HackerOne, was last valued at $829 million in 2022, according to PitchBook data. The plan will be to use the funding to expand operations in the U.S. and beyond, including potentially M&A, and to build more functionality into its platform, which — in addition to …

Your Android Phone’s Browser Is Filled With Junk. Clean It With a Few Taps

Your Android phone‘s web browser picks up a lot of data from all of the websites that you visit, and a lot of that does not need to be on your phone. Michael Pay: Pressure to invest will turn on deal flow taps

Michael Pay: Pressure to invest will turn on deal flow taps

Mergers and acquisitions in the UK appears poised for opportunities. The reversal of 2023’s inflationary pressures, rising interest rates and falling consumer confidence, being replaced in 2024 by wage growth catching up with price increases, lowering of interest rates and increasing business, if not consumer, confidence, is expected to bring about a resurgence of deal making activity in 2024.To understand this resurgence, particularly from a sellers’ perspective, consider the impact that the macro-economic impacts had on deal activity during 2023.Deals were down by more than 30 per cent from 2022’s high of almost 8,000 for UK targets being acquired.According to Experian’s Market IQ, 2023 saw just over 5,500 deals completed in 2023. Comparing this to 2022 and the 10-year average of 7,500 deals being completed, it is clear that 2023’s slowdown will have built a backlog of sellers wanting to exit.Equally buyers, particularly Private Equity, need to deploy capital. For Private Equity, even though 2023 was shaping up to be a lower call on funds than in 2023, they still spent less than they have.PE funds are …

Meesho taps micro-entrepreneurs to plug gaps in India’s supply chain network

Meesho taps micro-entrepreneurs to plug gaps in India’s supply chain network

India is one of the fastest growing economies, yet its supply chain system remains antiquated, operating much as it did decades ago. The logistics sector is highly fragmented, with a majority of small, regional operators lacking scale and efficiency. Regional truckers still rely on brokers and word-of-mouth to secure cargo, while severe truck shortages in urban manufacturing hubs delay transport of goods. And that’s a problem for India’s rapidly expanding e-commerce sector — and the players involved.  Meesho – backed by Prosus Ventures, Fidelity, SoftBank and Peak XV – is having a go at plugging the gaps in the country’s supply chain. The Bengaluru-headquartered startup launched a network, called Valmo (short for value movement), on Wednesday that aims at bringing together logistics platforms, technology partners and small entrepreneurs operating sorting centers to optimize the delivery process. Meesho is betting on micro-entrepreneurs because they have strong understanding of local communities and have the latent capacity to take on additional work, the startup said. The network allows delivery partners to be located closer to users, thereby reducing …

A balancing act between innovation and job concerns, as Africa taps on AI to drive growth

A balancing act between innovation and job concerns, as Africa taps on AI to drive growth

FIGHTING PEST AND DISEASE Among the uses for AI in Africa is dealing with crop losses from pests and diseases in the agriculture sector. Ghana, for instance, is among Africa’s largest producers of cashew nuts, but at least 30 per cent of its crop yield is ravaged by insect pests every year. AI engineer Darlington Akogo, who founded the company KaraAgro AI, said his firm harnesses technology to provide solutions that boost productivity in sectors such as agriculture and health. He started using a drone to help detect diseases on a cashew farm in Ghana last year, after its owners contacted him for help. “We fly the drone across the field, capture images, and then we run those images through the AI system. It will analyse each of them, tell you which ones have diseases, which ones have pests, and where they are,” Mr Akogo told CNA. “So when the farmer gets that information, he can go back to the farm and then treat that disease and pest.” Source link

Loewe Taps American Artist Richard Hawkins for Paris Menswear Show

Loewe unveiled its Autumn/Winter 2024 menswear collection on Saturday during Paris Fashion Week with help from Los Angeles-based painter and University of California professor Richard Hawkins. For the show, Jonathan Anderson, Loewe’s creative director, tapped Hawkins to create digital collages meant to mimic arched stained glass windows, while clips faded in of young men seemingly posed for private videos or engaged in casual shirt-tugging. Seven of Hawkins’ paintings were hung strategically on the venue’s back wall, as if mimicking a low-budget New York group exhibition. Related Articles As Vogue Paris correspondent Laurie Guilbault wrote, luxury labels from Prada to Louis Vuitton appeared to be playing with “archetypes of masculinity” on the runway and beyond. Loewe, too, was experimenting with gendered visuals, according to Guilbault, which she described as “a new kind of masculinity — one that is playful and sexy.” Hawkins’ work, in that respect, may have been the ideal fit. In 2009, New York Times‘ Roberta Smith characterized Hawkins’ subject matter as a collection of “pretty young men cut out of magazines and clothing catalogs,” …
