Don’t Trust AI to Sketch Your Suspects

Don’t Trust AI to Sketch Your Suspects

A man broke into an old woman’s house recently, and after being described to the police in Kent, England, an AI image of the fellow was rendered. Usually, of course, an artist will sketch the profile of the criminal suspect based on details provided by the witness, but now AI is having its shot; only, the result was laughable. The profile looked like it could have come from the 2008 version of the Wii. It isn’t detailed, the neck and head aren’t ratioed like a real person’s would be, and it just simply came out cartoonish. Frank Landymore reported on the incident over at Futurism, writing, The suspect is described as being a white man around five feet, five inches tall of an average build with short dark hair and a missing front tooth. Based on the police image, he may possibly even be a living, breathing PS1 character in the pixelated flesh, walking among us. Or, as some have pointed out, it could even be the very much not a video game character Pete Buttigieg, …

Poland will send suspects in attack on Navalny ally back to Lithuania – POLITICO

Two men detained in Poland in early April on suspicion of assaulting Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov in Vilnius are expected to be transferred to Lithuania by mid-May, a spokesperson for Lithuania’s prosecution service announced Thursday. The Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, which is coordinating the transfer, has not disclosed whether it is also seeking the extradition of the detained Belarusian citizen suspected of ordering the attack, as mentioned by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Volkov — a key ally of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who died aged 47 in an Arctic prison in February — was violently assaulted in his vehicle outside his residence in Vilnius on March 12. The two Polish suspects were arrested in Warsaw on April 3 and are set to remain in custody until May 13, according to a spokesperson for the court. The regional court in Warsaw has agreed to extradite the suspects to Lithuania with the condition that, if convicted, they will serve their sentences in Poland. Source link

Far-right coup suspects go on trial in Germany’s ‘Reichsberger’ plot

Nine men go on trial in Germany on Monday charged with high treason, attempted murder and plotting a violent coup d’etat aimed at installing an aristocrat as national leader and imposing martial law. The hearing in a maximum security courtroom in Stuttgart marks the start of three marathon trials of 27 people in total accused of conspiring in a plot foiled by authorities at the end of 2022. Together they amount to one of the largest legal proceedings in German history. Monday’s trial focuses on nine suspects, members of the Reichsberger (Citizens of the Reich) group, who allegedly aimed to impose harsh military law on Germany after carrying out a coup. The country’s domestic intelligence service Verfassungsschutz put the Reichsbergers, who it says number some 21,000 people and who do not recognize modern-day Germany as a legitimate state, under observation in 2016. The political leadership of the group on trial, led by real estate investor Heinrich XIII Prinz Reuss — scion of a now throneless dynasty — appear in court in Frankfurt next month, while another …

Who Was Jack the Ripper? 6 Likely Suspects

Who Was Jack the Ripper? 6 Likely Suspects

In 1888, a brutal serial killer terrorized the Whitechapel district in the East End of London. The general consensus is that Jack the Ripper had five victims, though some historians attribute additional deaths to him. His crimes shocked the world and exposed the horrendous conditions in the underbelly of Victorian society. The murders, which are likely the most studied crimes in history, are still unsolved today. Law enforcement, historians, and armchair detectives alike have proposed several suspects over the centuries, but no one has been cemented as a definite culprit.   The Case  The Canonical Five. Source: the BBC   Between August 31 and November 9 of 1888 in the East End of London, five women were murdered by whom police suspected was the same offender. These five became known as the “canonical five,” and the suspect earned the name “Jack the Ripper.” Some historians and law enforcement officials attribute preceding and later cases to the serial killer as well. The victims were all killed in a similar, hauntingly brutal fashion and lived similar …

University of Idaho murder suspect’s alibi defense puts spotlight on cellphone data analyst

University of Idaho murder suspect’s alibi defense puts spotlight on cellphone data analyst

When Bryan Kohberger’s lawyers filed an updated alibi defense last week, suggesting cellphone tower data will show the man suspected in the slayings of four University of Idaho students was not in the area of the crime scene when they were killed, they said they planned to turn to an Arizona-based cell data analyst for key testimony. It wouldn’t be the first time that Sy Ray has been asked to be an expert witness in a high-profile murder trial, although he said Friday that, out of the more than 100 times he’s testified in state and federal cases, it has typically been for the prosecution. Now, Ray’s involvement in the case of the four college students fatally stabbed in their off-campus apartment house in November 2022, which continues to stir speculation over why someone would commit the gruesome act, is putting a spotlight on his expertise after past scrutiny over his credentials. A timeline of the Idaho stabbings Ray declined to address the Kohberger case, as a judge issued a gag order last year preventing …
