After London Fair Suffers Loss, CEO Departs and MCH Looks to Rebrand

Lucie Kitchener, the CEO of stalled design fair Masterpiece London, which shows works by antique dealers and designers, stepped down from the role in December, a representative for the fair’s parent company MCH Group told ARTnews recently. The departure was the latest shift for Masterpiece, which has not staged a fair since 2022; the MCH representative said that “future plans are under review” for the brand, though further details were not provided. In 2023, MCH, the Swiss events company that also owns Art Basel, announced in regulatory filings that it was cancelling that year’s edition of Masterpiece and that the fair would not run again in its current form, as it had been losing money since at least 2020. Related Articles Two years before that, in 2021, MCH’s directors reported in financial filings they expected Masterpiece London to “return to profitability” after recovering from the pandemic cancellation of the 2020 fair. That did not end up happening. In subsequent reports, MCH said that Masterpiece suffered a £2.2 million profit loss in 2022 and another £2 …

Sunak suffers poll blow as levelling-up cash-for-votes row erupts | Conservatives

The Tory general election campaign hit more trouble on Saturday as Rishi Sunak faced accusations of using levelling up funds to win votes and Labour opened its biggest poll lead since the disastrous premiership of Liz Truss. As Sunak tried to fire up his party’s campaign before the first crucial TV debate with Keir Starmer on Tuesday, it emerged that more than half of the 30 towns each promised £20m of regeneration funding on Saturday were in constituencies won by Tory MPs at the last election. Some 17 of the £20m pots went to towns in areas won by the Conservatives in 2019, although two of those were no longer held by Conservative MPs when the general election was called. Just eight awards were made to towns in Labour seats, although many of the party’s strongholds tend to be in more deprived areas in need of levelling up money. The funding pledge led to accusations from Sunak’s opponents of “pork barrel” politics, while those involved in regeneration of the north said the announcement was more …

God suffers with us

God suffers with us

(RNS) — I have spent the last 48 years of my life in an intensive journey through higher Jewish learning. I had thought that I had heard of every Jewish thinker and every Jewish philosopher. But I had never heard of Otto Weiss, and it was Weiss who would turn out to become one of my profound teachers — and almost no one knows about him. I remembered Weiss because I was recently going through my phone and found some photos from a trip to Theresienstadt, in the Czech Republic, not far from Prague, eight years ago. Theresienstadt (Terezin) was the so-called “model ghetto,” the internment place for not only the simple Jews, the regular Jews, but, notably, the intellectuals, the artists, the musicians, the composers. The art and the theater and the music that emerged from Theresienstadt was powerful and beautiful. Consider the collection of children’s poetry and art called “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” It typifies the power of art and the human spirit, even and especially in the midst of unspeakable degradation. …

Naoya Inoue suffers first knockdown of his career – then delivers knockout victory

Naoya Inoue, the undisputed world super-bantamweight champion, recovered from the first knockdown of his professional career to stop Luis Nery in devastating fashion. The 31-year-old Japanese, who has held world titles at four different weights and two undisputed, went down in the first round, but picked himself up to secure a sixth-round victory after putting his Mexican opponent down for the third time with a brutal right hand. Nery stunned both the champion and a 55,000 sell-out crowd at the Tokyo Dome in Japan – where Buster Douglas shocked Mike Tyson in 1990 – when barely two minutes into the fight he floored Inoue with a swinging left hook. However, Nery had to pick himself up from the canvas in the second after the Japanese fighter caught him with a short left. Inoue scored heavily with the straight right in an impressive third-round display and began to showboat in the fourth as a frustrated Nery repeatedly missed the target with his big punches and was peppered with his opponent’s jab and body shots. The 29-year-old’s work …

Doja Cat Shops for Diamonds While Wearing Bed Sheet Look and Thong, Suffers Wardrobe Malfunction

Doja Cat seems to be taking the “Sleeping Beauties” theme of this week’s 2024 Met Gala very seriously.  The 28-year-old rapper, whose real name is Amala Raina Zandile Dlamini, shared photos and video of herself and fashion designer Guram Gvasalia shopping for jewelry ahead of the annual fashion event.  In one clip, Doja Cat is holding what appears to be a white bedsheet around her with black Christian Louboutin heels. She drops one part of the sheet, exposing a black G-string thong.  In one photo, Doja Cat hugs Gvasalia, showing off a diamond teardrop necklace hanging on her bare back.  It appears that the bedsheet look is actually a dress designed by the fashion label Vetements, as one of the photo features a tag from the brand attached to the white fabric.  Doja Cat even wore the look out on the rainy New York streets, sharing photos of herself and Gvasalia walking out of the store as assistants covered them with umbrellas.  On Sunday night, Doja Cat and Gvasalia were spotted attending Anna Wintour’s pre-Met …

Sunak urges Tories to stick with his leadership after party suffers shock election losses | Politics News

Labour’s shock victory in the West Midlands mayoral election was a further dagger to Tory hearts after a dire few days of local election results. Sir Keir Starmer called it a “phenomenal result” which was “beyond our expectations” as Labour’s Richard Parker ousted Tory incumbent Andy Street, who had held the role for seven years. The margin of victory was a cruelly tight 1,508 votes, and compounded Conservative disappointment as it followed another loss to Sadiq Khan in London, who secured a record-breaking third term as the capital’s mayor.
