Affordable Third-Party Mac Studio Storage Upgrades Coming in 2025

Affordable Third-Party Mac Studio Storage Upgrades Coming in 2025

French company Polysoft has successfully reverse-engineered Apple’s proprietary storage modules for the Mac Studio and plans to offer more affordable upgrade options starting in January 2025, following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The company’s “Studio Drive” modules will be available in 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities, with pricing starting at €399 ($420) for 2TB, €799 ($843) for 4TB, and €1,099 ($1,158) for 8TB – roughly half of what Apple charges for comparable storage upgrades at the time of purchase. Unlike traditional SSDs used in PCs, Apple’s storage modules require specialized engineering because the actual storage controller is built into the M1 and M2 chips rather than being part of the removable module. To develop compatible modules, Polysoft conducted extensive reverse engineering, sacrificing an original Apple module for detailed analysis. The company removed all its small components one by one using a laser station, inventoried them and measured their characteristics, then scanned every layer with a flatbed scanner. From this work, the company then made its own schematics and designed different boards, using the same Kioxia and …

Artist Jean Charles Blais Finds Roman Artifact Behind Studio Walls

Artist Jean Charles Blais Finds Roman Artifact Behind Studio Walls

After 35 years of use, Jean Charles Blais’ art studio in Vence, France, sprung a leak. As the painter tells it, a contractor removed a bit of the wall’s plaster coating in search of water, only to find a ghost of ancient Rome. Cradling the studio’s walls was a mosaic from the first or second century CE, when the Romans called this land Vintium. Vintium was a provincial but notable city in Roman Gaul; its legacy endures largely in the architecture of its old town—if you know what to look for—and a modest collection of artifacts, which has just increased in number by one (large bound). Related Articles During the summer maintenance, Blais and the contractor first spotted a Latin inscription. Chipping away the rest of the pale plaster revealed a hidden design, a series of faded, looping florets. “I would see this as the central part of a funerary inscription, probably carved on three of these stones one above the other,” Professor Roger Tomlin of Oxford University said in a statement emailed to ARTnews. Tomlin …

Appcharge raises M as studio demand for DTC platform increases

Appcharge raises $26M as studio demand for DTC platform increases

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) platform Appcharge revealed today that it has raised $26 million in its Series A round. The platform, which offers solutions in mobile games, has grown in popularity as a partner, especially as DTC becomes a viable revenue stream. According to Appcharge, it plans to use the funding to “hyper-scale [its] custom white-label offerings” to support increasing demand for an all-in-one payment solution that increases revenue and engages players. Appcharge allows studios to sell items and currency to players, by way of branded web stores, global payment systems and SDKs for in-app payments. According to the company, its solutions help studios scale paid user growth, increase user retention and maximize profits; Appcharge supports 500 payment methods and 80 currencies. Companies like Appcharge make for appealing partners to mobile game developers as their services spare the studio itself from having to create DTC solutions in-house. Creandum led the round, with Supercell, BITKRAFT Ventures, and Moneta Ventures participating with existing investors Play Ventures, Glilot Capital and angels. Carl Fritjofsson, Creandum general partner, said of the investment, …

Horror Studio Blumhouse Partners With Meta to Use Its AI Video Generator

Blumhouse goes AI. Speak No Evil A major horror movie studio seems to be turning into a bit of an industry horror show. As Variety reports, Blumhouse Productions, best known for franchises like “Halloween” and “The Purge,” has announced a partnership with Meta that grants it access to an early version of the tech company’s recently-unveiled video generation AI model Movie Gen. “Artists are, and forever will be, the lifeblood of our industry,” Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum said in a statement, as quoted by Variety. “Innovation and tools that can help those artists better tell their stories is something we are always keen to explore, and we welcomed the chance for some of them to test this cutting-edge technology and give their notes on its pros and cons while it’s still in development.” Given the major rifts between artists and AI companies, though, the fact that yet another movie studio is promoting the technology will undoubtedly prove controversial. Happy Death Day Blumhouse, which is also behind acclaimed features like “Get Out” and “Split,” …

HHKB Studio Review: The Programmer’s Mechanical Keyboard

HHKB Studio Review: The Programmer’s Mechanical Keyboard

It’s not often that something as well known as the Happy Hacking Keyboard gets reworked from the ground up. And when it does happen, those changes usually draw criticism from longtime fans. Look at Porsche’s switch from air-cooled to water-cooled engines in the 911, or Microsoft’s transition to a more tablet-like interface for Windows 8. If people are used to something, they won’t appreciate seeing it change drastically, regardless of whether these changes are ultimately good or bad. The latest iteration of the Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHKB) makes large changes to the model’s nearly 30-year-old legacy, and it can easily be seen in the same light. Besides the layout, almost every aspect of this keyboard has been altered. Thankfully, quite a few of these changes do feel like improvements. The HHKB Studio is a hot-swappable 60 percent mechanical keyboard with Bluetooth connectivity, integrated touchpads, a built-in trackpoint, and a unique programmer-oriented layout. The Studio has a PBT plastic case and keycaps, multidevice connectivity, and key map customization through the company’s proprietary Keymap Tool software. But …

Tesla’s Oct 10 Robotaxi event will be at Warner Bros studio in LA

Tesla’s Oct 10 Robotaxi event will be at Warner Bros studio in LA

Tesla will unveil its Robotaxi product at Warner Bros. studio in Burbank, CA, on October 10th, according to a report by Bloomberg. Tesla has been using its Giga Texas facility for its unveilings in recent years, after many years of doing them in Calfornia, where the company was founded and where its design and engineering departments remain. Many of these happened in or around Hawthorne, California, where the Tesla Design Studio is – so it makes sense that nonpublic concepts would be housed in the same area. But Tesla will branch out to another company’s facility for it’s October 10th unveiling, choosing to stage it at a large movie set in nearby Burbank, on the north end of the LA area. Tesla may have chosen the location due to its simulation of a suburban neighborhood. There are several houses and a simulation of a small-town downtown area. The idea could be to demonstrate to attendees what it might be like to get picked up by a robotaxi outside your home, and taken downtown for a …
