The Complete Howard Stern Interview with Kamala Harris

The Complete Howard Stern Interview with Kamala Harris

It’s hard to know where to start. This election comes down to whether we want to reward someone who tried to subvert our democracy four years ago. Whether we want to preserve the alliances that have kept the peace since World War II. Whether women want to resist losing rights they long thought secure. (It’s abortion now, and IVF and contraception next.) Whether we want two new extremists on the Supreme Court for decades to come. Whether we want basic competence in the White House, or a mentally declining chaos agent that calls the shots. Whether we want to honor basic facts, or promote conspiracy theories that erode any sense of truth. The list goes on. It’s discouraging that it’s even close, but nine years into this fever dream, we shouldn’t be surprised that we’re heading towards another razor-thin election. Above, Kamala Harris tells Howard Stern, “Let’s not throw up our hands. Let’s roll up our sleeves, because this is our country.” We’d urge you to take action and vote on November 5, or forever …

The Women Eleanor Roosevelt Left Behind | Scott W. Stern

The Women Eleanor Roosevelt Left Behind | Scott W. Stern

Early in 1938, a woman named Addie Odear in Lexington, Kentucky, wrote Eleanor Roosevelt a letter. Appealing to the first lady’s “graciousness and kindness,” she asked for advice “as to the proper way to proceed in a matter which is very close to my heart.” Two days after the letter arrived, a staff member in Roosevelt’s office considered the writer’s request: she worked at an institution that needed money to establish facilities to treat young women infected with syphilis, a prevalent and often asymptomatic sexually transmitted infection. The “fight against syphilis,” she wrote, “is the Lord’s work.” Odear sat on the board of the Kentucky branch of the Florence Crittenton Mission, which ran dozens of residential institutions for women and girls across the United States. The Crittenton Homes, which operated from the 1890s until well into the twentieth century—some were still open in the 1980s—were lauded for compassionately “uplifting” unwed mothers and sex workers. The Crittenton name, gushed one account from the 1930s, “is synonymous with mercy and love and help for unfortunate girls in …

It’s you versus machine as Stern unveils the world’s first AI pinball machine

It’s you versus machine as Stern unveils the world’s first AI pinball machine

Legendary pinball machine manufacturer Stern is back, and this time it has Artificial Intelligence on its side. If you ever felt as though pinball was a cruel game, as you watched your ball disappear down a hole with seemingly nothing you could do about it, well now you can rest easier in the knowledge that when that happens, AI is now laughing at you at the same time. The new Stern John Wick pinball machine, limited to 1,0000 machines and adorned with Keanu Reeves likenesses will feature, at first glance, nothing different from the pinball tables we have known and loved over the years. However, this is 2024 and we need AI involved so Stern has set out to mix things up by introducing Artificial Intelligence where the AI will be responsive to player behavior and actively work to alter the game as you play. Stern says: “To raise the stakes, John Wick pinball introduces Stern’s all-new dynamic AI combat system, an innovation that brings the frenetic combat of the legendary films to the game. …

The world has changed. So why do businessmen still think they can harass women at work parties? | Stefan Stern

The world has changed. So why do businessmen still think they can harass women at work parties? | Stefan Stern

An old, cruel joke claimed David Beckham wore headphones at all times so a voice could remind him to “breathe in, breathe out”. Some things that should come naturally don’t. You might think that a code of conduct for adult professionals attending a work-related social event, reminding them to “be considerate and respectful to each other” and “refrain from any unacceptable conduct” (defined elsewhere in the code), falls into the same category of advice as Beckham’s breathing tips. But apparently such things are now necessary, as codes of conduct issued by bodies such as the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA) and the International Securities Lending Association (ISLA), among others, confirm. If attenders at social events were in any doubt about the wisdom of making “unwelcome sexual advances, whether verbal or physical”, or “sexist, racist, homophobic or other discriminatory jokes, slurs, insults or comments”, now they know. Just don’t. The existence of these codes does not necessarily point to a profound moral awakening or new puritanism in the corporate world. It could simply be a case …

The cries from Britain’s struggling CEOs are growing louder – how can they survive on a mere £4.4m a year? | Stefan Stern

The cries from Britain’s struggling CEOs are growing louder – how can they survive on a mere £4.4m a year? | Stefan Stern

Every now and then, somebody lets the fat cat out of the bag. In January, it was the turn of Chris O’Shea, the chief executive of Centrica (the owners of British Gas), to say the unsayable about executive pay. His £4.5m pay package was “impossible to justify”, he said, “so there’s no point in trying to do that”. In 2016, there was a “Please, sir, I want some less” moment, when the then CEO of the Co-Op Group, Richard Pennycook, sought a 60% cut in his pay package as, he argued, his job had got simpler after a restructuring. But such episodes are unusual, and are often drowned out by the collective tutting and teeth-sucking of the top executive class. These admissions cause embarrassment and are not the story the business elite want to tell. Right now, in fact, pleas for even bigger and better pay packages are being heard in the City. Julia Hoggett, the CEO of the London Stock Exchange, has said that CEOs are getting paid at levels that are “significantly below …

Another EV startup gets stern Nasdaq warning

Another EV startup gets stern Nasdaq warning

More bad news for Californian EV startup Fisker, as it now faces a possible delisting from the Nasdaq due to low stock prices for 30 consecutive days. Fisker reports that it has received a non-compliance notice from the New York Stock Exchange as its stock had closed below around $1 for 30 straight trading days, reports Automotive News. Failure to comply can lead to a delisting, but Fisker has six months to regain compliance. The road hasn’t exactly been smooth for Fisker, which has faced a long line of issues and delays last year in getting its EVs to customers who had paid for them. Last year, Fisker cut its production forecast multiple times due to issues ranging from supply chain problems to internal issues. In response to Tesla’s price slashing last year too, Fisker reduced the price of its luxury Ocean Extreme SUV by $7,500, from $68,999 to $61,499. The company made more than 10,000 EVs last year, well below the 42,400 originally promised, but it delivered only about 4,700. Still, its stock price soared at the end …

Speaking on his SiriusXM show on Monday, Stern said: “He did the opposite of a roast. He was like a cheerleader. He didn’t say one negative thing about anybody.” After playing clips of Noah’s opening monologue, which included gushing praise of artists 21 Savage and Doja Cat, as well as Mark Ronson and his mother-in-law, Meryl Streep, Stern produced a sarcastic impersonation of the South African comedian and former Daily Show host. “21 Savage is so great. You know how great 21 Savage is? He always pays his taxes on time!” said Stern. “He’s got a great physique! He’s got a great ass! He’s 21 Savage, he’s fantastic! No one is safe, no one is off limits from my admiration, and you will hear it tonight!“ Reflecting on …

Djokovic braces for stern test against veteran slayer Etcheverry

Djokovic braces for stern test against veteran slayer Etcheverry

MELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic’s peerless pedigree and experience at the Australian Open might just make him the perfect target for Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who is fast making a habit of eliminating veterans at Melbourne Park. Argentine Etcheverry has been in terrific form this week, knocking out both Gael Monfils and Andy Murray in straight sets to set up a third-round match against Djokovic on Friday (Jan 19). Djokovic, a 24-times Grand Slam champion, has been far from his best having struggled at times in gritty wins over Dino Prizmic and Alexei Popyrin at the first major of the year. The Serbian, who along with Monfils and Murray was part of a crop of elite men’s players that broke through in the mid 2000s, said he would do his homework ahead of his clash with Etcheverry to avoid meeting the same fate as his contemporaries. “I didn’t see him playing, but he beat Monfils and Murray, quite comfortably both matches,” the 10-time Australian Open champion, who beat Etcheverry in ATP 1000 events in Paris and Rome last …

‘Jaws’ pinball table from Stern is fan service at its finest

‘Jaws’ pinball table from Stern is fan service at its finest

The thing about Jaws is it’s one of the greatest movies ever made. So, when someone decides to make a big table that does Jaws things loudly and repeatedly, I’m all in. Luckily, that’s exactly what we’re getting from pinball machine manufacturer Stern. The latest license from the folks behind Jurassic Park and Godzilla and countless other pinball classics got announced last week, and was available for hands-on play at CES 2024. After a brief hands-on session, my verdict is that Jaws is still great, and anything that reminds us of the greatness of Jaws is also cool. SEE ALSO: CES 2024: This laptop’s weird touchpad is for YouTube-obsessed users It’s a pinball shark, there has to be a twist I have to be clear about something up front: I’m more of a Jaws guy than a pinball guy. I’ll indulge in the odd game or two at a bar every blue moon, but video games are more my bag. So it’s hard for me to critically evaluate Jaws as a pinball game. My time …
