The Download: Greener steel, and what 2025 holds for climate tech

As of 2023, nearly 2 billion metric tons of steel were being produced annually, enough to cover Manhattan in a layer more than 13 feet thick. Making this metal produces a huge amount of carbon dioxide. Overall, steelmaking accounts for around 8% of the world’s carbon emissions—one of the largest industrial emitters and far more than such sources as aviation.A handful of groups and companies are now making serious progress toward low- or zero-emission steel. Among them, the Swedish company Stegra stands out. The startup is currently building the first industrial-scale plant in the world to make green steel. But can it deliver on its promises? The world’s first industrial-scale plant for green steel promises a cleaner future

The world’s first industrial-scale plant for green steel promises a cleaner future

Some of these automakers—including Volvo, which will buy from Stegra and rival SSAB—are marketing cars made with the green steel as “fossil-free.” And since cars and trucks also have many parts that are much more expensive than the steel they use, steel that costs the automakers a bit more adds only a little to the cost of a vehicle—perhaps a couple of hundred dollars or less, according to some estimates. Many companies have also set internal targets to reduce emissions, and buying green steel can get them closer to those goals. Stegra’s business model is made possible in part by the unique economic conditions within the European Union. In December 2022, the European Parliament approved a tariff on imported carbon-intensive products such as steel, known as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). As of 2024, this law requires those who import iron, steel, and other commodities to report the materials’ associated carbon emissions.  Starting in 2026, companies will have to begin paying fees designed to be proportional to the materials’ carbon footprint. Some companies are already …

5 Best Carbon Steel Pans For Every Budget (2024)

5 Best Carbon Steel Pans For Every Budget (2024)

Sometimes in this wild life you stumble upon a rabbit hole that ends up being more like a vast chasm. Such is the state of interest and appreciation for the world of carbon steel pans. One might think this humble node of cookery might be overlooked in favor of heritage-credited cast iron, utilitarian nonstick, or trending hexagon hybrid pan technologies. You would be wrong; carbon steel is no also-ran, no runner-up. There is an intense, rabid fandom for this style of cookware that shocked even me, and I write about, like, mineral water influencers. From a busy subreddit to a secret world of obsessive home and professional chefs to in-demand artisan carbon steel craftsmen who sell their wares by raffle ticket, the dedication and appreciation to carbon steel runs deep. It is a roaring American foodways subculture that has gone largely uninvestigated by the wider press, and I can only hope to scratch the surface of doing it justice with this guide (after the surface is scratched, of course, I advise reseasoning the pan with …

Construction worker dies after being struck by steel gate frame in Yishun

SINGAPORE: A construction worker died on Monday (Oct 21) after he was hit by a steel gate frame at a Yishun work site. The incident happened at around 6.50pm at Block 413 Yishun Ring Road. The worker, a 55-year-old Chinese national, was pushing a steel gate frame when it struck him, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). He was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Photos shared with CNA showed a construction worker lying on the ground. Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force were seen evacuating him from the scene on a stretcher.   “As a general safety measure, sliding gates must be properly designed and installed with appropriate stoppers to prevent them from being derailed when in use,” said MOM. The ministry said it is investigating the incident and has instructed the employer, Jin Shan Construction, to stop all work activity at the site. It added that Nee Soon Town Council is the project developer. Source link

5 Best French Presses (2024): Plastic, Glass, Stainless Steel, Travel

5 Best French Presses (2024): Plastic, Glass, Stainless Steel, Travel

The French press is a humble piece of coffee-making equipment. It doesn’t require electricity, yet experts agree that it can brew a richer and more full-bodied cup of joe in comparison to its more technologically advanced peers. For example, natural oils that would otherwise be filtered out in a drip coffee maker remain fully intact, making the coffee aromatic and robust. The French press method of making coffee is straightforward, cost-effective, easy to use, and hard to mess up. It also doesn’t take up too much counter space. Once you have your measurements down, it’s a quick process of steeping coarse coffee grounds in near-boiling water. We tested these models using the James Hoffman French press technique, in which he uses 30 grams of coffee to 500 grams of water, waits for four minutes, and stirs through the crust. Whether you end up choosing a French press made from glass or stainless steel, a few factors make a difference based on your personal coffee needs. Want to make the process even easier? Take a look …

Steel giant ArcelorMittal warns Gove over Kent planning verdict | Business News

The world’s second-largest steel company has warned the government that a planning verdict due this week could lead to a key division quitting the UK. Sky News has seen a letter sent by ArcelorMittal to Michael Gove, the levelling-up secretary, in which it says that a decision to allow the closure and redevelopment of part of Chatham Docks would have “seismic adverse consequences… [for] the British economy and multiple strategic industries”. In the letter from Matthew Brooks, who runs ArcelorMittal’s construction solutions arm in the UK, the company urges Mr Gove to issue an urgent order to allow fuller government scrutiny of the redevelopment proposals ahead of Wednesday’s decision by Medway Council. “This is highly time-sensitive – calling in the application after next Wednesday will not be possible,” Mr Brooks wrote. He warned that if the proposals were approved, ArcelorMittal would “regrettably be left with no alternative but to leave Chatham Docks and, more than likely, cease operations in Britain, given the lack of suitable alternative sites”. “This, too, would likely be the case for …

The best frying pans you can buy, from cast iron to non-stick and stainless steel

The best frying pans you can buy, from cast iron to non-stick and stainless steel

What are iron frying pans good for? Iron pans are formed by various different processes – forged, spun, or cast – but all tend to be expensive and require maintenance (although you can find decent affordable options). On the plus side, they are incredibly versatile, durable, and fun pieces of equipment. The experts I spoke to unanimously agreed that, whilst an iron frying pan isn’t a one-size-fits-all option, it’s unbeatable for certain tasks.  How should you use an iron frying pan? For frying meat and vegetables, for example, iron frying pans are top dollar, and, for many chefs, years of seasoning (generally washing with only hot water and wiping a layer of oil after it’s dried) mean they develop special flavour from years of use.  Iron pans are great for gas hobs and can withstand high temperatures – which means they can be bunged in the oven at full whack or used on barbecues. They are usually compatible with induction hobs, too.  Are iron frying pans non-stick? Yes. You can expose iron to high …

Rethinking EU restrictive measures     – POLITICO

Rethinking EU restrictive measures     – POLITICO

Are there unintended consequences to European Union sanctions against Russia? While rocked initially by the restrictions, Russia’s economy has shown remarkable resilience. Europe, on the other hand, is facing a year of glacial growth. There are also growing concerns around the legitimacy of some of the embargoes being issued by Brussels, the adverse impact on European businesses and the wider humanitarian ramifications, both at general and individual levels. As the fighting enters a third year, it is clear that a rethink may be required. A strong, united stance from the European Union is necessary — but so too is a clear, consistent and compliance-friendly sanctions regime that looks to minimize collateral damage wherever possible. The diminishing impact of sanctions With Europe’s 13th package of economic measures being introduced, Russia remains the world’s most sanctioned country by a considerable margin. Almost 2,000 Russian individuals and organizations have been hit with restrictions, and bans have been placed on a wide range of import and export goods, from luxury watches to crude oil. Embargoes on the latter proved …
