5 Best French Presses (2024): Plastic, Glass, Stainless Steel, Travel

The French press is a humble piece of coffee-making equipment. It doesn’t require electricity, yet experts agree that it can brew a richer and more full-bodied cup of joe in comparison to its more technologically advanced peers. For example, natural oils that would otherwise be filtered out in a drip coffee maker remain fully intact, making the coffee aromatic and robust. The French press method of making coffee is straightforward, cost-effective, easy to use, and hard to mess up. It also doesn’t take up too much counter space. Once you have your measurements down, it’s a quick process of steeping coarse coffee grounds in near-boiling water. We tested these models using the James Hoffman French press technique, in which he uses 30 grams of coffee to 500 grams of water, waits for four minutes, and stirs through the crust. Whether you end up choosing a French press made from glass or stainless steel, a few factors make a difference based on your personal coffee needs. Want to make the process even easier? Take a look …

The best frying pans you can buy, from cast iron to non-stick and stainless steel

The best frying pans you can buy, from cast iron to non-stick and stainless steel

What are iron frying pans good for? Iron pans are formed by various different processes – forged, spun, or cast – but all tend to be expensive and require maintenance (although you can find decent affordable options). On the plus side, they are incredibly versatile, durable, and fun pieces of equipment. The experts I spoke to unanimously agreed that, whilst an iron frying pan isn’t a one-size-fits-all option, it’s unbeatable for certain tasks.  How should you use an iron frying pan? For frying meat and vegetables, for example, iron frying pans are top dollar, and, for many chefs, years of seasoning (generally washing with only hot water and wiping a layer of oil after it’s dried) mean they develop special flavour from years of use.  Iron pans are great for gas hobs and can withstand high temperatures – which means they can be bunged in the oven at full whack or used on barbecues. They are usually compatible with induction hobs, too.  Are iron frying pans non-stick? Yes. You can expose iron to high …

3 Best Stainless Steel Frying Pans in 2024

3 Best Stainless Steel Frying Pans in 2024

Tramontina: It came down to a photo finish for the best budget skillet between the Calphalon and this Tramontina pan. The Calphalon edged out Tramontina’s capable 10-inch skillet, which costs under $60, with a bit more even heat distribution in the tests I ran. Material: Material’s $125 10-inch sauté pan is a great option if you’re looking for a more robust (read, heavier) pan with a lid. It’s technically a sauté pan and not a skillet since it has straight sides, and it performed well across the board.  De Buyer: This legacy French producer makes an excellent 11-inch skillet, but it might be better suited for a professional kitchen. It’s heavier than most and costs an impressive $200. This all makes it hard to recommend to the casual home cook.  Demeyere: This Belgian-made seven-ply skillet was the heaviest of all the pans I tested, despite being just 9 inches across. The 4-pound frying pan heated evenly and seared food well, but that weight coupled with a bloated $250 price tag means it’s probably not a …

This Is Why Tesla’s Stainless Steel Cybertrucks May Be Rusting

This Is Why Tesla’s Stainless Steel Cybertrucks May Be Rusting

Tesla says it uses proprietary stainless steel (possibly from Outokumpu of Finland, Europe’s largest producer, which runs a plant in Calvert, Alabama). However, even proprietary stainless steels can stain, especially if any cheaper steel fittings beneath the Cybertruck’s panels react with the stainless product. There are five basic families of “stainless steel”: austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation hardened. Some containing chromium among other constituents, such as nickel and molybdenum, are more corrosion-resistant than others, forming an impervious and protective molecular-scale surface barrier of chromium oxide. The Cybertruck manual includes some startling care instructions for those who have bought the SUV, including when washing it is advised not to use hot water or clean the electric truck in direct sunlight. Stainless steel discoloration usually takes the form of small, dark brown pits on the steel’s surface. Exposure to sea salt and high temperatures can be one cause of such pitting. Some parts of California, a hot state with a 1,264-mile coastline, might, therefore, be worse than others for causing the orange flecks reported by Raxar …
