Meet Rob Owen: overweight, millionaire gambler and sport’s unlikeliest coach | Squash

[ad_1] Rob Owen’s wife, Alison, sits down in the kitchen and succinctly reflects on 25 years of marriage, oblivious to the TV behind her silently showing endless horse racing replays. “Stressful,” she concludes, before laughing at the acerbity of her summary. A rare hush has briefly descended while the indefatigable Owen has his picture taken in a neighbouring room, where he can faintly be heard amiably discussing which props to include in each shot. Alarmingly forthright when he deems it necessary, Owen is also unceasingly hospitable, mystified by the photographer continually declining the offer of a hot drink in exchange for his troubles. Few houses better reflect their occupant than the one cultivated by Owen, the gregarious yet rebellious professional gambler unexpectedly tasked with resurrecting England’s squash glory for the sport’s Olympic debut in four years’ time: a beautiful West Midlands home from which he has made his millions, routinely locking himself away for 12-hour stints betting on sporting action from Wincanton, Wentworth or the Wankhede Stadium. Republicans seize on student protests, demand Biden squash pro-Palestine speech with National Guard

Republicans seize on student protests, demand Biden squash pro-Palestine speech with National Guard

[ad_1] Republican lawmakers are seeking to exploit turmoil on college campuses for political gain, some now demanding that President Joe Biden deploy soldiers to break up pro-Palestine protests. The student protest at Columbia began April 17 with an on-campus encampment, organizers associated with Columbia University Apartheid Divest accusing the university of investing in companies that do business that “profit from Israeli apartheid,” as ABC News reported. Dr. Minouche Shafik, president of Columbia University, last week called in the NYPD to clear out the students, a decision made after she was grilled by Republicans earlier this month on the school’s response to alleged antisemitism on campus. Although police made roughly a hundred arrests, an NYPD official later described the protest as “peaceful.” Students at other schools, including Yale University and New York University, have since begun protests in solidarity. At the same time, Jewish groups have been pressing the university to take more steps to protect Jewish students against antisemitism.  At a congressional hearing earlier this month, Dr. Shafik faced criticism from Republicans who maintained that …

Rustic maltagliati pasta with squash and chilli recipe

Rustic maltagliati pasta with squash and chilli recipe

[ad_1] Maltagliati is a rough-cut, squarish pasta popular in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Cipriani Food calls its version tagliardi (available online and quick to cook) and I really like using it in vegetable pasta dishes like this or with a meat ragu base.  If you can’t find this, cook lasagne sheets and cut them into irregular squares or rectangles about 2.5-3cm big. You can cut your squash to the size and shape of the pasta. Timings Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 500g butternut squash, or other sweet orange-fleshed squash variety, peeled and seeds removed (about 300g after prep) 200g maltagliati 1 medium red chilli, finely chopped, seeds and all 100ml extra-virgin olive oil 100g butter 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds, lightly toasted and roughly chopped 50g Parmesan, freshly grated, plus more to serve Method Cut the 300g squash flesh into rough 2.5-3cm squares and then into thin slices so they resemble the pieces of pasta; I use a mandoline for this.  Bring a pan of salted …

Black bean tortillas with squash salsa recipe

Black bean tortillas with squash salsa recipe

[ad_1] Beans are a common filling in tortillas, frequently slow cooked and softly textured, but delicious in salsas like this too. The beans I’ve used are known as black badger, otherwise called carlin peas or pigeon peas, but you could use any dried bean or pea here, or even tinned to reduce the cooking time. Timings Prep time: 20 minutes, plus overnight soaking Cook time: 1 hour 10 minutes Serves  4 Ingredients 150g black badger beans/carlin peas, or other dried beans, soaked in plenty of cold water for 24 hours 3 tbsp olive oil 2 small red or green chillies, finely chopped, seeds and all 3 tbsp chopped coriander, plus some sprigs to serve grated zest and juice of 1 lime 150g butternut squash flesh, cut into rough 1cm dice 4-5 spring onions, halved lengthways and finely chopped 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds, lightly toasted and chopped 4 soft flour tortillas Method Rinse the soaked beans then place in a pan with plenty of lightly salted water.  Simmer for about an hour or until the beans …

Squash goals: Minnesota man’s 2,749lb pumpkin sets world record | California

[ad_1] A Minnesota horticultural teacher set a new world record for growing the heaviest pumpkin – a gargantuan jack-o’-lantern gourd weighing 2,749lb. Travis Gienger set the record at the 50th World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California. The plump pumpkin beat the previous record, set in 2021 by Stefano Cutrupi of Italy, by 47lb. “This pumpkin is called Michael Jordan because it’s the year [20]23… and he’s the greatest basketball player of all time,” Gienger told KSTP-TV in Minnesota. (Jordan’s jersey number was 23.) It “started out basketball round, and I said this is going to be a perfectly round basketball-shaped pumpkin”, Gienger said. Michael Jordan grew into an enormous, lumpy, orange pumpkin, equivalent to about 2,110 basketballs, or about 275 jack-o’-lantern gourds. For comparison, Michael Jordan, the basketball player, weighed 216lb during his NBA career. Gienger holds his two-year-old daughter Lily while looking at his pumpkin on Monday.
