Graham Potter: Premier League breaks record for most sackings in a single season

Graham Potter: Premier League breaks record for most sackings in a single season

CNN  —  It was just six months ago that Graham Potter was deemed the man to usher in a fresh, exciting era at Chelsea. The club’s new ownership group, led by American businessman Todd Boehly, had enticed Potter away from Brighton with the promise of managing one of the most lucrative teams in world soccer. More than $600 million was spent on bringing big-name players to the club and Potter, one of the most exciting young managers in the Premier League, was to mold them into a winning machine. But, on Sunday, the club announced that it had sacked its manager after an underwhelming spell in charge. Potter managed to win just 10 of the 28 league matches this season and leaves the team 11th in the Premier League table. In recent weeks, players had looked a shadow of their former selves and many fans had lost confidence that Potter’s plan for the club could ever work. Eventually, after previously sticking by its manager, Blues ownership agreed. “On behalf of everyone at the club, we …

Lionel Messi: Some fans whistle as Messi’s name is announced as Paris Saint-Germain’s season hits new low

CNN  —  Paris Saint-Germain’s miserable season went from bad to worse on Sunday as the team suffered a second straight home defeat with a 1-0 loss to Lyon. Even before the game kicked off, Lionel Messi bore the brunt of the frustrations of some PSG fans who whistled when his name appeared on the big screen during the announcement of the starting lineup. After Alexadre Lacazette missed a first-half penalty, Bradley Barcola’s goal 10 minutes into the second period was enough to earn Lyon the three points on a night that PSG rarely looked like threatening the visiting goal. Lens’ 1-0 victory over Rennes and Marseille’s 1-1 draw with Montepellier means both teams are now just six points behind PSG at the top of Ligue 1, and even the domestic title may slip from the team’s grasp. The reaction of some fans on Sunday must have felt a world away from the adulation and worship Messi received during his recent return to Argentina for friendlies against Panama and Curaçao as the country continued its World …

The haunting Masters meltdown that changed Rory McIlroy’s career

The haunting Masters meltdown that changed Rory McIlroy’s career

CNN  —  Slumped on his club, head buried in his arm, Rory McIlroy looked on the verge of tears. The then-21-year-old had just watched his ball sink into the waters of Rae’s Creek at Augusta National and with it, his dream of winning The Masters, a dream that had looked so tantalizingly close mere hours earlier. As a four-time major winner and one of the most decorated names in the sport’s history, few players would turn down the chance to swap places with McIlroy heading into Augusta this week. Yet on Sunday afternoon of April 10, 2011, not a golfer in the world would have wished to be in the Northern Irishman’s shoes. A fresh-faced, mop-headed McIlroy had touched down in Georgia for the first major of the season with a reputation as the leading light of the next generation of stars. An excellent 2010 had marked his best season since turning pro three years earlier, highlighted by a first PGA Tour win at the Quail Hollow Championship and a crucial contribution to Team Europe’s …

Flying a sports car with wings

Story highlights The intuitive amphibious ICON A5 looks like a sports car It does require a sports pilot license to fly it Tampa, Florida CNN  —  When it comes to piloting a plane, I have zero experience. In fact, I’ve never even considered attempting it. Nevertheless, as we swoop over Florida’s Tampa Bay on a gorgeous November morning, I enthusiastically take over the controls of the ICON A5, a two-seater amphibious plane that looks like a sports car, maneuvers like a jet ski and is so intuitive, the company says that even a novice can learn to fly it in less than 30 hours. At 23 feet long and weighing in a 1,510 pounds, it’s known as a sea light-sport aircraft. Designed to help you focus on the freedom of flying without worrying if the plane will react unpredictably, there’s nothing else quite like it on the market. Now that I’m in control, my whole body tenses for a good five minutes. Am I really ready to pilot this shiny new machine all by myself? …
