Extreme Events”: US Cancer Deaths Spiked In 2021 And 2022 In “Large Excess Over Trend

[ad_1] Cancer deaths in the United States spiked in 2021 and 2022 among 15-44 year-olds “in large excess over trend,” marking jumps of 5.6% and 7.9% respectively vs. a rise of 1.7% in 2020, according to a new preprint study from deep-dive research firm, Phinance Technologies. Algeria, Carlos et. al “US -Death Trends for Neoplasms ICD codes: C00-D48, Ages 15-44”, ResearchGate, March. 2024 P. 7 Extreme Events The report, which relies on data from the CDC, paints a troubling picture. “We show a rise in excess mortality from neoplasms reported as underlying cause of death, which started in 2020 (1.7%) and accelerated substantially in 2021 (5.6%) and 2022 (7.9%). The increase in excess mortality in both 2021 (Z-score of 11.8) and 2022 (Z-score of 16.5) are highly statistically significant (extreme events),” according to the authors. That said, co-author, David Wiseman, PhD (who has 86 publications to his name), leaves the cause an open question – suggesting it could either be a “novel phenomenon,” Covid-19, or the Covid-19 vaccine. Oregon man spiked smoothies for daughter’s 12-year-old friends with sedatives, affidavit says

[ad_1] An Oregon man accused of spiking smoothies with sedatives and giving them to his daughter’s pre-teen friends has been charged with multiple felonies, according to court documents.  Michael Meyden, 57, of Lake Oswego, allegedly drugged three of his daughter’s friends while they slept over on the night of Aug. 25, 2023, according to court documents and a probable cause affidavit filed this week in Clackamas County. The girls, all 12 years old, were hospitalized and tested positive for benzodiazepine, described in the affidavit as a drug typically prescribed for anxiety, with common prescriptions under the names Valium, Xanax and Klonopin. Benzodiazepines are a depressant that produces sedation, sleepiness and a relaxed mood, the affidavit said. The affidavit, which was written by a Lake Oswego police detective, did not specify why Meyden allegedly served the children spiked smoothies. Meyden is charged with three felony counts of causing another person to ingest a controlled substance, three felony counts of applying a schedule IV controlled substance to the body of a minor and three misdemeanor counts of …

Sgt. Mike Ernster, the department’s public information officer, says enforcement is important, but “we won’t be able to arrest our way out of this.” Stephen Maturen/Getty Images In the past two years, car thefts have skyrocketed in many U.S. cities, driven by a trend targeting Kias and Hyundais. In Chicago, 80 cars on average were stolen every day last year. In Minneapolis, a woman’s car was reportedly targeted three times in six months. But just across the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minn., a very different story is playing out. Although the smaller Twin City also saw a surge, car thefts there …

‘I had my drink spiked and was raped – the crime needs its own law to protect victims like me’

‘I had my drink spiked and was raped – the crime needs its own law to protect victims like me’

[ad_1] Updating existing laws on drinks spiking is a long overdue step in the right direction I knew I was cutting it fine – trying to squeeze in a last afternoon with old friends ahead of a final night with my family, before leaving for home. “A couple of hours,” I said to my parents, who were planning a takeaway pizza send-off for me. The crowd at the pub was much larger than I’d anticipated (“you’re hardly ever here! Why wouldn’t everyone come?” my best friend said, delightedly) and it was hard to make my way around everybody. I became anxious, knowing that my family was expecting me home; more so when I saw how low my phone battery was. Not wanting to rely on its dwindling strength to get an Uber, I said goodbye to everyone and told them I was going to head out onto the street and hail a taxi. After one last bathroom trip and a final flurry of farewells, one of the crowd – an old acquaintance, but never one …

Web3 developer activity spiked in Q4 2022 despite market volatility

Web3 developer activity spiked in Q4 2022 despite market volatility

[ad_1] Web3 developer activity still grew in the last quarter of 2022, according to a new report, despite crypto market volatility and stacks of negative headlines. Ethereum, one of the largest layer-1 (L1) blockchains in the crypto ecosystem, had a 453% increase in mainnet smart contract deployments in the fourth quarter of 2022, signaling high developer momentum amid crypto market volatility, according to Alchemy’s Web3 Development Report. “As we saw in Q3 as well, web3 devs are long-term committed to building out this ecosystem because they believe in the technology,” Jason Shah, head of growth at Alchemy, said to TechCrunch. “That durable belief, paired with more reliable infrastructure, better tooling and increasing consumer adoption every quarter, is compelling devs to dig their heels in despite unfavorable market conditions.” The global market capitalization of the crypto market has fallen from over $2 trillion at the beginning of 2022 to about $800 billion by the end of the year, according to CoinMarketCap data. The two biggest cryptocurrencies, bitcoin and ether, fell 14% and 8.77%, respectively, from the …
