L.A. County sheriff’s deputy found not guilty of perjury in ‘sloppy’ 2019 gun case

L.A. County sheriff’s deputy found not guilty of perjury in ‘sloppy’ 2019 gun case

A Los Angeles County jury found a sheriff’s deputy not guilty of perjury this week, more than two years after prosecutors charged him with lying in court. In 2019, Deputy Kevin Honea testified that he’d personally recovered a stolen gun from the front seat of a car — but prosecutors said video showed that another deputy found the weapon inside a bag in the trunk. At the time, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials defended Honea, saying he was “sloppy” but did not lie. On Friday afternoon, following more than a week of trial, a jury agreed. Steven Alvarado, Honea’s trial attorney, called the verdict a “fantastic” outcome. “I’m ecstatic for Deputy Honea and his family,” Alvarado told The Times on Friday. “The jury got this one right and gave a good cop his life back.” In a statement Friday, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office framed it as a difficult case and said it would “continue to prioritize integrity and accountability” in law enforcement. “We recognize the challenges inherent in prosecuting cases of …

The sloppy case against Fani Willis

The sloppy case against Fani Willis

Fani Willis, the DA prosecuting Donald Trump, Michael Roman and 18 co-conspirators in Georgia’s 2020 election interference case, has filed her response to Roman’s motion to disqualify and dismiss the case on the grounds that Willis and her outside counsel are having a consensual affair. There is obviously no conflict of interest. Roman, who served as Trump’s director of election day operations, was indicted along with Trump and others on a full range of election felonies, including impersonating government officials, forgery, pressuring officials to lie, and advancing fake electors to falsify Georgia’s election results. Roman’s motion, previously scheduled for hearing on February 15, 2024, is defeated by its own attached Exhibits, which Roman apparently failed to read. Donald Trump, whose trial counsel also seems to struggle with exhibits, has joined in Roman’s motion.  Aside from defeating Roman’s motion on the face of his own exhibits, and despite all the hyped-up headlines suggesting otherwise, Willis’ response lays bare the lack of any conflict of interest created by her retention of Wade as outside counsel. A trumped-up …

‘I’m proud of my daughter but not her sloppy lifestyle: should I intervene?’ | Life and style

‘I’m proud of my daughter but not her sloppy lifestyle: should I intervene?’ | Life and style

I have a beautiful daughter who I think is marvellous. She’s in her late 30s and has just completed a master’s degree and bought her first home … on her own. She has lived overseas by herself and is very focused and capable. I’m very proud of her. I know I will probably incur the wrath of some readers for my question but my daughter does not do herself any favours with the way she dresses or the way she lives. She is a little overweight and the clothes she wears are not flattering. That’s her mother’s verdict too, not just mine. She doesn’t wear sleazy clothes, just clothing that is not suitable for a slightly plus-sized woman. At home, she is quite sloppy. Dishes stack up in the sink, clothes are strewn from room to room and the worst thing is her cat. She keeps it inside and it urinates everywhere. And I mean everywhere. When you walk into the apartment you cannot avoid the strong pungent stench of cat urine. She is either …

Care’s late heroics give sloppy England late World Cup win against Samoa | Rugby World Cup 2023

A fourth win from four matches for England but this was undoubtedly a significant step backwards for Steve Borthwick’s side, who needed Danny Care to produce a late sniping try and a last-ditch tackle to see off an inspired Samoa side. The Pacific Islanders’ head coach, Seilala Mapusua, had promised an “unapologetic Samoan” performance and that is precisely what his side produced. For England, this was a sorry showing. Samoa deserved their half-time lead after two fine tries from the veteran wing Nigel Ah Wong and were agonisingly close to sealing victory at the death when Neria Fomai just ran out of gas after yet another flowing move. Steven Luatua, Theo McFarland and Fritz Lee were their standout performers while Lima Sopoaga gave them direction at fly-half but a famous victory slipped from their grasp. England can take some credit for clawing their way back but their quarter-final opponents –most probably Fiji – will fancy their chances if they play like this. Owen Farrell became his country’s highest points scorer – overtaking Jonny Wilkinson in …

The Second GOP Debate Was Messy, Chaotic, and Sloppy

The Second GOP Debate Was Messy, Chaotic, and Sloppy

Suddenly, it just tumbled out: “Honestly, every time I hear you I feel a little bit dumber for what you say.” That was former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley’s rebuke of businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, easily the best line of Wednesday night’s messy and awkward GOP primary debate. Ramaswamy, for his part, produced his own meme-worthy quote during a heated exchange with Senator Tim Scott: “Thank you for speaking while I’m interrupting.” Such was the onstage energy at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum: Chaotic, sloppy, largely substance-free. Seven candidates desperately fought for fresh relevance; none of them came away with it. Rather than pitching themselves as the candidate who can beat former President Donald Trump, these Republicans seemed to be operating most of the time in an alternate universe, in which Trump was absent not just from the stage, but from the race. Eight years ago, so many candidates were vying for the Republican nomination that the party took to splitting primary debates into two sessions: the main event and the undercard. The latter …

England cannot afford sloppy mistakes in World Cup semi-final against Australia | Women’s World Cup 2023

England might not be hitting the performance heights of their triumphant European Championship campaign but have instead relied on a strong World Cup mentality on their journey to the semi-finals. The quarter-final victory against Colombia was the third single‑goal win of the tournament for England, in addition to the penalty shootout triumph against Nigeria. It is a sign that despite not being at their free-flowing best these new-look Lionesses have the fortitude to get through tough situations. England did not play particularly well against Colombia and do not look like a side that will blow an opponent away, which makes the defence even more important than usual. The adaptability of the England squad has been crucial throughout the tournament. Sarina Wiegman has selected a 3-5-2 formation in recent games after starting the tournament with a back four. England have been solid throughout, conceding only twice in their five fixtures. I think England deserve a lot of credit for putting their bodies on the line in a unified performance to defeat Colombia. We have not needed …
