Here are the 30+ startups showcasing at HAX’s May 1 Demo Day

A few weeks back, TechCrunch ventured out to New Jersey to pay an early visit to HAX’s Newark offices. As much as I complained about the 90-minute commute in from Queens, it’s nothing compared to the last time I paid a visit to the SOSV-run hardware accelerator’s Shenzhen space. HAX’s China operations have shrunk considerably since then, courtesy of a global pandemic and all of the ensuing lockdowns. That space had remarkable proximity to the global supply chain. One simply had to walk downstairs into mall-like spaces, filled wall to wall with component vendors. In some ways, the Newark space is a reflection of the Shenzhen offices. There’s a faint sense of déjà vu, entering through the doors and spotting the familiar stadium seating where company and startup meetings are held. The China offices were far more lived-in by the time I visited. As the first news organization to visit the HAX space, we were greeted with walls of boxes awaiting the recycling truck — a familiar sight to anyone who’s ever moved office or …

Macron visits Brazil, showcasing much-improved relations with Lula

Macron visits Brazil, showcasing much-improved relations with Lula

Emmanuel Macron receives Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the Elysée Palace, June 23, 2023. LUDOVIC MARIN/AFP The gesture is rare enough to be worth a mention: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will travel to meet with Emmanuel Macron in Belém, the capital of the Amazonian state of Para, on the first day of the French president’s three-day state visit to Brazil, Tuesday, March 26. Even at 78, the left-wing leader did not hesitate to make the 1,600-kilometer journey to personally welcome his guest. It is a sign of the importance of Macron’s visit, and of the warming relations between the two countries. You’d have to go back eight long years, to 2016 and François Hollande’s term in office, to find the last visit by a French president to Brazil (and even to 2013 for a state visit, also by Hollande). This is mostly due to the tumultuous presidency of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), who had copiously insulted Macron and his wife during an unprecedented diplomatic crisis in 2019, as fires were …

‘I felt like a movie star’: how showcasing my work at the Brit Awards helped boost my fledgling career | Blazing a trail for the talent of tomorrow

Mahari-Rae Ogilvie has always had a passion for the visual arts. From primary school, when her classmates would ask her to do bubble writing for them, through to secondary school, where she excelled in graphic design, Ogilvie always knew she wanted to carve out a creative career. And now, at just 17, she is enjoying her first taste of professional success thanks to the Mastercard creative challenge. “My mum can’t stop talking about it,” says Ogilvie. “Sometimes it’s hard to explain what we do on my course, but now my family gets it and they think it’s amazing.” The creative challenge was led and set by Mastercard and was open to all students at the Brit School, one of the UK’s leading performing and creative arts schools, and it’s here that south-Londoner Ogilvie is studying interactive digital design. Having entered the challenge without success last year, Ogilvie jumped at the chance to have another go, with students asked to reimagine the Mastercard sonic logo in any art form of their choice. (Wondering what a sonic …

India celebrates Republic Day showcasing military might, cultural heritage | In Pictures News

Thousands of people lined a ceremonial boulevard in the heart of India’s capital to watch a colourful parade showcasing the country’s military power and cultural heritage to mark its 75th Republic Day. French President Emmanuel Macron attended the parade on Friday as the chief guest at the celebration of the adoption of the country’s Constitution on January 26, 1950, following India’s independence from British colonial rule. Indian President Draupadi Murmu escorted Macron in a ceremonial British-era horse-drawn carriage from the nearby president’s palace to the viewing stand. It was the first time the carriage has been used at the parade since it was abandoned by the government 40 years ago in favour of a car. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing a saffron-and-yellow turban, greeted Macron at the viewing stand. India traditionally invites foreign leaders to witness the spectacle. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was the guest of honour last year, former French President Francois Hollande in 2016 and former US President Barack Obama in 2015. Ten Southeast Asian leaders watched the parade in 2018. Tanks, …
