John Mulaney’s ‘Field of Dreams’ Oscars bit proves he should’ve hosted

[ad_1] Before presenting the award for Best Sound at the 2024 Oscars comedian John Mulaney explained, in rapid-fire detail, the nonsensical plot of Field of Dreams. For those who don’t remember the iconic film, in Mulaney’s words, “He mows done corn and then there is a field and then he’s like, ‘I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.’ And the bank is like, ‘You want to pay your mortgage?’ And he’s like, ‘Nah, I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.’ And then he finds James Earl Jones who wrote The Boat Rocker which I thought was a real book late into my 20s.” SEE ALSO: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt bring their Barbenheimer beef to the Oscars stage Then he explains what’s weird about it: “Timothy Busfield pushes little Gabby Hoffman off the bleachers and she falls down and she’s unconscious. Then Bush Lancaster is moonlight graham and he comes up and pats her on the back a couple times and he’s like, ‘Hot dog in the throat.’ And then he can’t go back in …

Nikki Haley appears on ‘SNL’, says she should’ve previously stated slavery caused Civil War

[ad_1] Studio 8H at New York City’s Rockefeller Center may be as close as Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley is going to get to a debate venue for a bout with former President Donald Trump. The former South Carolina governor, who pulled out of a scheduled Republican candidate debate in New Hampshire last month after it was clear Trump would not attend, appeared as herself in a CNN election-year town hall sketch during the “Saturday Night Live” cold open Saturday. The appearance not only got Haley some face time with a version of the frontrunner and her former boss when she was ambassador to the United Nations, it allowed her to correct perhaps her biggest flub on the campaign trail. Host Ayo Edebiri of television’s “The Bear” appeared as an audience member during the fictitious town hall. She aimed a question at Haley: “I was just curious what would you say was the main cause of the Civil War?” she said. “Um, and do you think it starts with an ‘s’ and ends with a ‘lavery’?” …

Royal Family LIVE: King Charles ‘should’ve been firmer’ with Prince Harry | Royal | News

[ad_1] King Charles “should’ve been firmer” with Prince Harry in his younger years, claims one royal expert. The Duke of Sussex has been called out for not being able to take “responsibility” and for always being allowed to “play the fool”. The 39-year-old has issued a number of attacks on the Royal Family – particularly over the past year. In his highly-controversal memoir Spare, which was released in January 2023, Harry discussed the breakdown of his relationship with his elder brother and claimed that his father, the now-King Charles, previously made several jokes at his expense. Royal expert Ingrid Seward now claims that he would have been given “a bit more early discipline”. In an extract from her new book My Mother and I, which was shared by the Daily Mail, Ms Seward explained: “As the spare, Harry had always been allowed greater licence than his elder brother. He’d play the fool and get away with childish pranks.” Although amusing his father and late mother in his early years, the expert added: “Later events suggest, however, …

A Biopic That Should’ve Been a Documentary

A Biopic That Should’ve Been a Documentary

[ad_1] Annette Bening’s portrayal of a legendary swimmer in Nyad ultimately succumbs to narrative cliché. Liz Parkinson / Netflix November 1, 2023, 8 AM ET For years, the filmmaking team of Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi has specialized in making documentaries about athletes and adventurers who push the very limits of human survival. The directors’ critical peak came with the 2018 documentary Free Solo, but in works such as Meru and The Rescue they painted portraits of mountaineers and cave divers who exist to perform nigh-impossible feats of endurance. So it’s no surprise that their first foray into making a narrative feature closely resembles that kind of documentary: Nyad, a biopic about the distance swimmer Diana Nyad, whose athletic goals were challenging to the point of being absurd. Nyad (played by Annette Bening) is an open-ocean swimmer who set various records in her 20s, including swimming from the Bahamas to Florida in record time back in 1979. But she never completed a more ambitious, more dangerous trip from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, some …

The Israel-War Email That College Presidents Should’ve Sent

[ad_1] Welcome to Up for Debate. Each week, Conor Friedersdorf rounds up timely conversations and solicits reader responses to one thought-provoking question. Later, he publishes some thoughtful replies. Sign up for the newsletter here. Question of the Week Two friends, Petra and Rodrigo, are having an argument. Petra thinks the world is best if people stay in their lane and do their job as best they can, narrowly construed. CEOs should try to maximize profits within the law. Emergency-room doctors should do their best to save the life of every patient. Lawyers should represent every client to the utmost of their ability. Scholars should publish their findings as accurately as possible. And parking-meter attendants should write citations without regard for who is getting them. Rodrigo thinks the world is best if everyone is not only doing their job, but taking a broader view in an attempt to improve society. CEOs should feel a social responsibility to donate some corporate profits to good causes. Emergency-room doctors should triage in a way that treats shooting victims before …

At Virgin Orbit, it never should’ve come to a staff furlough

At Virgin Orbit, it never should’ve come to a staff furlough

[ad_1] Last night, CNBC broke the bombshell news that Virgin Orbit was pausing operations for at least a week while it looked for funding to support the business. As part of that pause, company executives reportedly told staff in an all-hands meeting that they were being furloughed – and that it would be unpaid. The news isn’t exactly a surprise. Virgin Orbit’s financial woes have been discussed and dissected by the media for months – including here at TechCrunch – with many wondering how the company could sustainably continue operations. The first misstep came during the company’s entrance on the public markets via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). That transaction, which Virgin Orbit said would yield as much as $383 million in SPAC proceeds, turned out to yield just $68 million from the SPAC (and $228 million overall). Since then, the company’s continued to rapidly burn through cash. In the most recent quarterly financial report, filed at the end of the third quarter of last year, Virgin Orbit reported having around …
