In a press release issued Tuesday (December 24), the company announced a recall of its 2-pound Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after a house cat in Oregon died and subsequent testing revealed the product contained H5N1 bird flu. “Consumption of raw or uncooked pet food contaminated with HPAI [highly pathogenic avian influenza] can cause illness in animals,” the company said in a statement. “To date, one case of illness in a domestic cat has been reported in connection with this issue.” Northwest Natural urged customers to immediately discard any recalled cat …

The Guardian newspaper reported Saturday (9 November) that the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation had condemned Billy And The Epic Escape, which was published earlier this year. The group criticised one of the subplots of the book, which tells the story of a First Nations girl living in foster care, for contributing to the “erasure, trivialisation, and stereotyping of First Nations peoples and experiences”. In a statement, Oliver, 49, said he was “devastated” to have caused offence and apologised “wholeheartedly”. “It was never my intention to misinterpret this deeply painful issue,” he said. “Together with my publishers we have decided to withdraw the book from sale.” First Nation campaigners were particularly …

Pint-size wine to be allowed on shelves from September – as doubts raised over demand | UK News

Pint-sized bottles of wine will be allowed on UK shelves from autumn under new post-Brexit trade rules – but doubts have been raised over their demand. Business minister Kevin Hollinrake said seven changes to pre-packaged wine sizes are due to come into force on 19 September. Announcing the date in the House of Commons, he said the measure will support the “thriving” UK wine sector by providing opportunities for “innovation and greater choice”. But the SNP’s Patrick Grady said the government should admit there is “little to no demand or interest for this supposedly glorious Brexit benefit”. Follow Sky News on WhatsApp Keep up with all the latest news from the UK and around the world by following Sky News Tap here The move to introduce the 568ml size of wine, to sit alongside 200ml and 500ml measures already available, was announced in December and hailed by ministers as a Brexit “freedom”. Pint bottles of Champagne were sold in the UK before Britain joined the European Common Market and were on shelves until 1973. But …

This new-in M&S £40 summer dress is flying off the shelves and I can totally see why

This new-in M&S £40 summer dress is flying off the shelves and I can totally see why

Everyone seems to be talking about M&S right now. From designer-looking accessories going viral on TikTok to high-quality wardrobe staples, the retailer is leading the way with its summer fashion must-haves, and one new-in dress is a particular hit with shoppers.  As a shopping writer, I spend a lot of time scrolling through the new-in section, and was quick to grab my attention. It wasn’t just the gorgeous green shade that caught my eye, but the airy skirt paired with the flattering shirred bodice is ticking all the boxes for the ultimate summer dress.  Floaty midi dresses are so easy to wear during the spring and summer months. The relaxed style stays so comfortable throughout the day, and they can be easily teamed with trainers or sandals for just about any occasion.  The bright green colour is already giving something to your outfit that a neutral shade wouldn’t, so I would keep it simple when styling the M&S number. Gold jewellery would pair perfectly with the dress, and I’d probably also opt for gold sandals …

‘Healthier’ white bread could soon be on the shelves, scientists say | UK News

‘Healthier’ white bread could soon be on the shelves, scientists say | UK News

UK supermarkets could soon see a “healthier” version of white bread, according to scientists. A team of researchers at Aberystwyth University will be studying the milling and blending process for white flour. Peas, beans and oats could be added to wheat flour to boost its nutritional value. The research project has been funded by Innovate UK, the UK’s national innovation agency. The agency’s Better Food For All initiative has backed 47 projects to improve food quality, boost nutrition and extend the shelf-life of foods. White bread has less fibre than wholegrain, wholemeal or brown bread, according to the NHS website. Its advice for those who prefer white bread is to look for higher-fibre options. ‘Exciting opportunity’ Dr Catherine Howarth from Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences said the project was a “very exciting opportunity to improve people’s diets”. Dr Howarth said the work was especially good news for “those who favour the look and sensory attributes of white bread”. “The project underlines how our leading plant research here in Wales can make …

Ukrainian libraries clean out shelves

Ukrainian libraries clean out shelves

For several months now, Olga Matiukhina has been reliving the same scene as she wanders around the shelves of the municipal library where she is the director in Dnipro, a city of one million inhabitants in south-eastern Ukraine. She picks up a book, flips through it, and suddenly becomes overwhelmed by emotion. The headmistress remembers the first time she had read it: During the Soviet era, when young people’s sentimental education came from devouring the ball scenes in Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Quickly, however, she feels beset by questions that brutally disperse her memories. Does this text glorify the Russian Empire? Or its army? She ponders. Like all the country’s libraries, hers received official recommendations to remove authors who support the invasion or Russian supremacy from its shelves in the name of martial law. “For any educated person, removing a book from a library is a difficult thing to do,” argued the sexagenarian, whose commitment to her country is beyond doubt. Yet she feels like the entire world is watching her. No other war …

Rivian Shelves New Georgia Factory In Latest Cost-Cutting Measures

Rivian Shelves New Georgia Factory In Latest Cost-Cutting Measures

Two weeks after Rivian Automotive Inc. announced a disappointing production forecast and another round of job cuts, the company’s CEO revealed that the construction of a $5 billion factory in Georgia would be put on hold to reduce costs.  CEO RJ Scaringe unveiled a crossover EV called the R3. The new model will be priced lower than the R2 to increase affordability and boost sales.  Scaringe also surprised investors by announcing its new factory at the Georgia site east of Atlanta would be shelved. “Rivian’s Georgia plant remains an extremely important part of its strategy to scale production of R2 and R3. The timing for resuming construction is expected to be later to focus its teams on the capital-efficient launch of R2 in Normal, Illinois,” the filing said.  The filing noted that the decision reduced capital expenditures for the automaker by $2.25 billion and “improved cash visibility.” “Our Georgia site remains really important to us,” Scaringe said, adding, “It’s core to the scaling across all these vehicles, between R2, R3 and R3X. And we’re so appreciative of …

I Tried the Viral ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail.’ Here’s Why Tart Cherry Juice is Flying Off Your Grocery Store’s Shelves.

I Tried the Viral ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail.’ Here’s Why Tart Cherry Juice is Flying Off Your Grocery Store’s Shelves.

By now, you’ve probably heard of the new TikTok health craze, the “Sleepy Girl Mocktail.” This drink recipe has gone viral for its claim to help you fall asleep without the use of sleep aids.  A week before I sat down to write this article, I went to the store in search of the ingredients. Down the juice aisle at my local Publix, I studied each shelf passing by stocked rows of cranberry, apple, beet, tomato, various V8 and prune juice. But when I got to the organic juice shelf, there was an entire section completely empty. The tart cherry juice was gone.  Caroline Igo/CNET This isn’t a one-off experience. This seems to happen whenever there’s a new viral TikTok trend. Whether it’s fashion or an intriguing skin care trend, TikTok drives people in waves to new products. However, not all TikTok trends are safe — take the Nyquil Chicken videos, for example. So, is the “sleepy girl mocktail” even a good idea? I’ve been writing about all things sleep for years now. Here’s a …

Ignitable cakes, sweatshirts and more: Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift gear fly off store shelves

Ignitable cakes, sweatshirts and more: Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift gear fly off store shelves

The ring’s maker, Emily Bordner, from eb & Company, suspects that Donna Kelce bought the ring for her son’s star-studded sweetheart. The Kansas City store also gave the superstar of NFL mums (her oldest son, Jason Kelce, is a center for the Philadelphia Eagles) a pair of sold-out earrings bearing her youngest’s number on a Chiefs jersey. Swift has since been spotted wearing those, too. It’s been all hands on deck ever since, with Bordner’s husband, mother and all her friends enlisted to help out. “Bananas,” she said. “It’s been absolutely bananas. I don’t think I’ve ever worked this hard in my entire life, hands down. Absolutely not.” At Westside Storey, it all started when Swift placed an order last fall. She later was spotted wearing a hat and sweatshirt the Kansas City boutique sent her, recalled Chris Harrington, the store’s owner. He said he initially thought the flood of business would be short-lived, just a fun story to share when the mania ebbed. “People talk about the Taylor Swift effect, and you hear about …

Lightyear shelves solar EV plans, pivots to systems for other OEMs

Lightyear shelves solar EV plans, pivots to systems for other OEMs

Star-crossed startup Lightyear has finally thrown in the towel on attempting to bring its long-promised solar EVs to market – at least one donning its own badge and design language. The startup’s founding CEO, Lex Hoefsfloot, has been replaced as the born-again startup pivots toward solar panel development to be implemented on other companies’ vehicles. That, frankly, is just not as sexy. It’s been an exciting yet disappointing seven-year journey for Lightyear. Like many startups, the solar EV company demonstrated some inspiring and potential industry-changing technology, only to fall short due to a lack of funds. We at Electrek have covered much of that journey, including the evolution of Lightyear’s original solar EV concept into the Lightyear 0, and were even present for that seemingly pivotal, now less-relevant milestone in Finland, when the flagship SEV began production… briefly. We were also there behind closed doors at CES 2023, and got an up-close look at the company’s true holy grail, the $40,000 Lightyear 2 SEV. Unbeknownst to us, Lightyear would announce it was filing for bankruptcy …
