Health insurance giant Kaiser will notify millions of data breach after sharing patients’ data with advertisers

U.S. health conglomerate Kaiser is notifying millions of its members of a data breach after confirming it shared patients’ information with third-party advertisers, including Google, Microsoft and X (formerly Twitter). In a statement shared with TechCrunch, Kaiser said that it conducted an investigation that found “certain online technologies, previously installed on its websites and mobile applications, may have transmitted personal information to third-party vendors.” Kaiser said that the data shared with advertisers includes member names and IP addresses, as well as information that could indicate if members were signed into a Kaiser Permanente account or service and how members “interacted with and navigated through the website and mobile applications, and search terms used in the health encyclopedia.” Kaiser said it subsequently removed the tracking code from its websites and mobile apps. Grindr again sued for allegedly sharing users’ HIV status

More than 650 claimants in the United Kingdom are suing Grindr, alleging the world’s most popular LGBTQ dating app broke national privacy laws by sharing users’ most sensitive health information — including their HIV status — with third-party data brokers for advertising purposes. The app used “covert tracking technology” to do so, according to the claim lodged in London’s High Court on Monday. Grindr previously admitted to sharing users’ HIV status in 2018, and even defended the practice despite widespread outcry. As reported by the BBC, the company is accused of illegally sharing users’ HIV status, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity with data analytics companies Apptimize and Localytics — who, claimants say, may have also kept some of the data for other purposes. Despite marketing itself as a privacy-sensitive dating app for marginalized communities, claimants allege Grindr paid the two data brokers to surveil people’s usage of the app. The company is accused of sharing user data on several occasions, mainly before April 2018, but also between May 2018 and April 2020.   “Grindr owes it …

Hundreds of users of the gay dating app Grindr have alleged the company shared their private information, including their HIV status, with third parties, a law firm said on Monday.  Austen Hays said it was filing the mass data protection lawsuit at London’s High Court and claimed thousands of Grindr users in the UK may have been affected. The firm alleges users’ highly sensitive information, including HIV status and the date of their latest HIV test, was provided to third parties for commercial purposes. It said around 670 people had signed up to the lawsuit over breaches said to have taken place between 2018 and 2020, with potentially thousands more joining the case. Austen Hays’ managing director Chaya Hanoomanjee said in a statement: “Grindr owes it to the LGBTQ+ community it serves to compensate those whose data has been compromised and have suffered distress as a result, and to ensure all its users are safe while using the app, wherever they are, without fear that their data might be shared with third parties.” A Grindr …

NPR hide caption toggle caption NPR An Instagram page where the user has hidden their entire photo grid. The trend is being led by younger members increasingly concerned for their privacy. NPR Not too long ago Jacob Giancola, a music producer in Los Angeles, hid all the photos on his Instagram profile. It wasn’t exactly a revolutionary act, but his friends quickly took note. “When people asked me, ‘you’re so mysterious, why do you do that?’ I just say, ‘I like the sense of privacy, I guess,’” said 28-year-old Giancola. He’s not the only one. It’s something that has become so prevalent on Instagram that I’ve decided to call it Grid Zero. For these users, and there are a lot of them, the Instagram grid — traditionally the province of documenting life milestones and jaunts to Mallorca — has become something else: A deliberate blank slate.
