Labour’s Wes Streeting sparks furious backlash for ‘shameful’ Susan Hall attack | Politics | News

Labour’s Wes Streeting was facing a furious backlash over an attack on Susan Hall on the eve of the London mayoral election. The shadow health secretary took to social media platform X to claim a vote for the Tory candidate would be a “win for racists, white supremacists and Islamophobes the world over”. The Labour frontbencher said: “A win for Susan Hall and the Conservatives is a win for racists, white supremacists and Islamophobes the world over. “Susan Hall’s campaign has been fought from the gutter with dangerous and divisive politics. London, we cannot let her win. Vote Sadiq.” But Mr Streeting’s post prompted a fierce backlash from Conservative MPs. Former home secretary Suella Braverman said: “London deserves better than this sort of casual hate. “And no one believes that he’s telling the truth now about women and single-sex spaces anyway.” Tory deputy chairman Jonathan Gullis added: “Labour was served with an unlawful act notice by the EHRC after it found Labour responsible for unlawful acts of harassment & discrimination (antisemitism). “Labour, which you served …

Legal experts: “Shameful” Supreme Court puts US one vote away from “the end of democracy”

It’s not a hard question, or at least it hasn’t been before: Does the United States have a king – one empowered to do as they please without even the pretext of being governed by a law higher than their own word – or does it have a president? Since Donald Trump began claiming he enjoys absolute immunity from prosecution for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, two courts have issued rulings striking down this purported right, recognizing that one can have a democracy or a dictatorship, but not both. “We cannot accept former President Trump’s claim that a President has unbounded authority to commit crimes that would neutralize the most fundamental check on executive power – the recognition and implementation of election results,” states the unanimous opinion of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, issued this past February, upholding a lower court’s take on the question. “Nor can we sanction his apparent contention that the Executive has carte blanche to violate the rights of individual citizens to vote and have their …

The shameful tragedy of Miriam Rivera, reality TV’s first trans star

Widely described as the first trans celebrity to emerge from British reality TV, Rivera, a trans woman from Mexico, rose to fame as the star and premise of There’s Something About Miriam, a dating show that aired on (the now-defunct channel) Sky One in 2004. In the series, six twentysomething lads spent three weeks trying to win the affections of the glamorous woman, while unaware that she was trans. They discover this only at the end of the series, in a reveal that provoked widespread tabloid fascination, a lawsuit and, later, abject condemnation. In 2019, Rivera was found dead, having apparently taken her own life. Her story, explored in the new three-part Channel 4 documentary Miriam: Death of a Reality Star, is less well known than that of some other reality TV tragedies, …

‘She was tough, but it broke her’: why There’s Something About Miriam was reality TV’s most shameful low | Television

It was the very definition of “different times”. In summer 2003, a TV dating series saw men compete for the affections of a 21-year-old Mexican model named Miriam Rivera. What her suitors didn’t realise was that the glamorous star of the show had a secret. In the climactic episode, Rivera announced that she was a transgender woman. All hell broke loose. Contestants sued the show in an attempt to ensure it never aired. There’s Something About Miriam would go down in the showbiz hall of shame as one of the most controversial reality shows ever. Now, a Channel 4 docuseries revisits the making of the show 20 years since it aired – and five years since Rivera died at the age of 38. It’s a story of belief-beggaring insensitivity and its tragic aftermath. In the new investigation, Miriam’s family tell the story of her turbulent childhood before transitioning. Named Hugo Cesar, she was assigned male at birth but always felt different to her three brothers, playing with dolls while they preferred baseball. When she was …

Mob descends on pervert’s home after ‘shameful and disgusting’ messages | UK | News

Kevin Wilkes, who engaged in lewd conversations with the supposed teenager (Image: Child Online Safety Team) An irate crowd gathered at the home of a man after he was exposed for sending “shameful and disgusting” messages to what he believed was a 13-year-old girl on Facebook and WhatsApp. Kevin Wilkes, who engaged in lewd conversations with the supposed teenager, sent her images of himself in compromising positions. However, he was actually interacting with a decoy profile managed by paedophile hunters. Liverpool Crown Court heard on Thursday that 58-year-old Wilkes, currently of no fixed abode but previously from Johnson Avenue in Prescot, had been caught in explicit exchanges on the social media platforms with an account created by the Child Online Safety Team. The court heard how Wilkes shared photos of himself in his boxers and dressing gown and solicited pictures of the girl in her underwear and school uniform. Prosecutor Christopher Taylor recounted how the sex offender made crude references to his anatomy and expressed sexual arousal, referring to adult videos as “sexy videos”. He …

Sydney Sweeney responds to ‘sad and shameful’ producer who said she ‘can’t act’ and ‘isn’t pretty’ | Ents & Arts News

Sydney Sweeney has hit back at a Hollywood producer who said she “can’t act” and is “not pretty”, calling her comments “sad” and “shameful”. The 26-year-old actress, who’s starred in hits including White Lotus and Euphoria, is hot property in LA right now, most recently producing and starring in independent horror film Immaculate – just one of three feature films she’s had out in the last six months. Why is she so hot?” Baum, who has produced over 30 movies including Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Father Of The Bride, was speaking in front of a live audience with New York Times film critic Janet Maslin at an event in Pleasantville, New York, following a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers, staring Jeremy Irons. Responding to the comments, a representative …

The shameful abandonment of seafarers – POLITICO

The shameful abandonment of seafarers – POLITICO

This is a drama less visually dramatic than the Houthis’ attacks — but it too involves shocking rule-breaking, as an increasing number of sailors are being abandoned by their vessels’ owners, left stuck on board sometimes for months or even years.  And a leading culprit behind this growing abandonment appears to be the similarly growing shadow fleet. On Dec. 18, for example, 11 Indonesian seafarers working on the Sierra Leone-flagged cargo ship Grand Sunny realized the vessel’s owner could no longer be reached, and were left stranded in the Chinese port of Nansha. “We are trying to get food and water to the vessel urgently,” the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) logged on Dec. 19. These sailors have been stuck ever since. Moreover, the ship’s owner, Thousand Star International Ltd., is so tiny, there’s virtually no information about the company. These abandoned Indonesians aren’t the only seafarers trapped on their ships either. In the French port of Lorient, three Georgian seafarers have been stranded on their Tanzania-flagged icebreaker since Dec. 7. “The crew is in …

Patrick Stewart’s ex criticises ‘shameful’ Star Trek actor for diminishing’ relationship in memoir

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Actor Lisa Dillon has hit out at “shameful” Patrick Stewart for “diminishing” their five-year relationship in his recent autobiography. Dillon, who is best known for her role in the BBC series Cranford, had a relationship with the Star Trek actor from 2003 to 2007 after starring in a production of The Master Builder. When Stewart met the 23-year-old Dillon, he was 62 and married to Wendy Neuss. In the memoir, Stewart, who recently said he “grieves” his “non-existent” relationship with his two children, wrote of his time with Dillon: “And so, another divorce. I felt stupid and responsible … I had cheated on my wife with a younger woman – again. “And just like my affair with Jenny Hetrick, my time with Lisa Dillon would also prove to be relatively short … In a life chockablock with joy and success, my two failed marriages are my greatest regret.” Dillon, who …

I’ve done some shameful things to sell my books. But there’s a line even I can’t cross | Nell Frizzell

Some days I would rather get my bikini line waxed in the window of Dunelm than walk into another bookshop. Not that bookshops aren’t wonderful places. Of course they are. Bookshops are seething with joy and knowledge and comfort and diversion. They are hideously beautiful to look at, full of like-minded people and ripe with the excitement of discovery. But that, you see, is the problem. Like a stranger holding your childhood toy in one hand and a claw hammer in the other, bookshops have the power to break your heart into tiny shards and then throw the splinters in your eyes. This week, I watched American Fiction at my local independent cinema. I was with my friend Miranda – also an author – and as well as an audible gasp at the scene where Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, played by Jeffrey Wright, is offered a $750,000 (£600,000) advance for a book he has written under a pseudonym (I’d classify a $750,000 book advance as science fiction rather than comedy), we also shared a wincing moment …

It Took Me 20 Years To Reveal My Most Shameful Secret

It Took Me 20 Years To Reveal My Most Shameful Secret

For many years, I was silent about what had happened to me. I felt shame as if something was wrong with me because of what was done to me. I hid in the shadows, disconnected from life and myself. Instead of asking for help, I would lash out in anger, pushing away anyone who tried to get to know me. I was carrying a huge secret and the weight of it was crushing me. I was molested for four years of my childhood. While it was going on, the intimidation and threats from the abuser kept me silent. I was afraid that if I asked for help, the people I cared about would get hurt. So I stayed silent. I continued to be silent for many years after it finally stopped.  The burden of carrying this secret weighed heavily on my heart and soul for years.  I was in my early 20s when it all came rushing back to me, flooding my mind with the memories. I was reliving it all over again, and again, and again, often waking up in the middle of the …
