Harlow Collinge: Childminder Karen Foster jailed for 12 years and seven months for killing baby boy with ‘forceful shaking’ | UK News

A childminder has been jailed for 12 years and seven months for killing a nine-month-old boy by shaking him to death in frustration. Karen Foster, who was due to go on trial for the murder of nine-month-old Harlow Collinge, pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter last Friday after discussions with the child’s family. The basis of the 62-year-old’s plea was that “forceful shaking” of Harlow caused his death after he had toppled over out of his high chair, started crying and she shook him in frustration, Preston Crown Court heard. Mr Justice Barry Cotter said in court that Harlow was a “happy, healthy, much-loved” boy, but said Foster chose to continue childminding despite ill health and pain in her hip. He noted she worked more than she should have under Ofsted rules and said this contributed to her “loss of temper”, before adding: “You should have been a safe pair of hands to which Gemma Collinge could ensure her precious child. “I have no doubt you snapped on the 1 March 2022, in part …

“Shaking his head”: Trump “in disbelief” as lawyer admits he went out of his way to bash witnesses

“Shaking his head”: Trump “in disbelief” as lawyer admits he went out of his way to bash witnesses

A lawyer for former President Donald Trump insisted at a contempt hearing Thursday that his client’s comments on jurors and witnesses do not run afoul of a gag order, even as he conceded that the Republican candidate is not merely responding to attacks but actively seeking out opportunities to spout off on his trial. Prosecutors accuse Trump of violating the gag order in his Manhattan criminal case an additional four times, citing his praise of David Pecker, former publisher of the National Enquirer, as a “nice guy” and his attack on jurors as being “95 percent Democrats” rapidly picked from “a purely Democrat area.” Following a hearing last month, Trump also exited the courtroom, where he’s being tried on charges of falsifying business records to cover up hush payments, and approached reporters to share an attack on Michael Cohen, his former fixer. “When are they going to look at all the lies Cohen did in the last trial,” Trump said. Judge Juan Merchan, who fined the former president $9,000 earlier in the week for previous …

Artists are shaking up Hollywood’s exclusive poker scene

Artists are shaking up Hollywood’s exclusive poker scene

Artist Sarah Kim belongs to a poker group of up-and-coming art-world denizens. Part poker group, part art collective, they’re an equal mix of men and women, newbies and grinders, at varying levels of their creative careers. Painter Sarah Kim realized soon after her move from New York to Los Angeles that learning Texas Hold ’Em would pay off. She’d heard whispers of an ultra-exclusive, high-stakes “art game” involving L.A.’s major artists, dealers and collectors going back decades. Trailing casino chip crumbs at gallery exhibits and artist studios, “It was clear to me that poker was a huge part of the art world in L.A.,” she said. She tried her first hand at a game artist Isabelle Brourman hosted at Murmurs Gallery and soon fell in with an eclectic poker-playing group of local artists and curators. For Kim, whose landscape motifs tackle the anxiety of belonging, the felt-topped table became her social life raft and dealt her a newfound clarity and confidence. “Being a woman in the art world, it’s like I’m playing the same game,” …

Women Are Shaking Up the Vatican + Claire Giangravé

Women Are Shaking Up the Vatican + Claire Giangravé

A synod on synodality? Sign us up! For the past three years, the global Catholic Church has been undergoing a period of discernment. One of the main issues of contention? Women’s ordination. Given our interest in women’s leadership in Protestant churches, we’ve been very curious how that conversation happens on the Catholic side. And now that we seem to have some clarity on where the Church will land on the issue, at least in the near term, we wanted to have RNS’s Vatican reporter, Claire Giangravé, give us the inside scoop. Plus, some popcorn with the pope. GUEST:

‘The time is here’: the ex-government insider shaking up Hungarian politics | Hungary

It is a chaotic political saga that Hungarians are following like a soap opera. A former government insider has become the talk of the country after he publicly broke with Hungary’s powerful leadership and declared he would launch a new political party. Until a few weeks ago, Péter Magyar was virtually unknown. Now, he is dominating conversations and headlines – and making the government of Hungary’s longtime prime minister, Viktor Orbán, deeply uncomfortable. A lawyer by profession, Magyar once belonged to an elite circle around Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party. He served as a Hungarian diplomat. He held senior positions in state entities. And he was married to Judit Varga, a former justice minister who was slated to lead the Fidesz party list in the June European election. The couple, who have three children, were often portrayed as the perfect, model conservative family. Supporters of Peter Magyar look on as he speaks at an opposition rally on Hungary’s National Day on 15 March on Andrassy Avenue in Budapest. Photograph: János Kummer/Getty Images But one day in …

Yungblud announces Bludfest – his own festival aimed at ‘shaking up’ the ‘too expensive’ industry | Ents & Arts News

British star Yungblud has announced his own music festival – saying the industry is too expensive and needs to be “shaken up”. The genre-bending singer-songwriter will headline Bludfest, a one-day festival at Milton Keynes Bowl which will also feature acts including rapper and singer Little Yachty, punk duo Soft Play, and singer-songwriters Nessa Barrett, Lola Young and Jazmin Bean, plus The Damned in an “icons” slot. Yungblud, whose real name is Dom Harrison, announced the event at a secret gig in Camden, north London, attended by about 500 fans. Image: The star pictured on stage at Coachella last year. Pic: Amy Harris/Invision/AP Speaking to Sky News before sharing the announcement, the singer said he was fed up with gigs and festivals being too expensive. “I think like it all needs shaking up a little bit,” he says. “I believe that the festivals, gigs and plans that are in motion aren’t representative of the people out there. “I believe that gigs are too expensive, festivals are too expensive, and I just wanted to work to create …

‘After four hours, I was tired, thirsty and shaking’: the women taking photography to extremes | Art

‘What’s great about my age,” says Hannah Starkey, “and going through the menopause, is that you leave the male gaze behind. And it’s really liberating. You can’t really sell me anything. And I’m dangerous – because I can tell you the truth!” A piercing, perilous honesty and a fully emancipated female gaze are characteristics that rebound in Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and The Art of Protest, a major show at South London Gallery, organised with the V&A. Crossing continents and generations, this galvanising group show seeks to join up ideas about image-making and dissent, offering a visual manifesto for a fourth wave of feminism. When Katayama worked as a jazz singer, a customer once shouted: ‘A woman who doesn’t wear high heels is not a woman’ Belfast-born Starkey, 53, presents a trio of prismatic, large-scale “abstract portraits”. The works belong to a wider series commissioned to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement last year. The photographs pay homage to a generation of dovish activists, women who were instrumental in Northern Ireland’s …

‘I get looks of disbelief’: the visionary women shaking up architecture worldwide | Architecture

It is unusual for authors to announce that they can’t wait for the day when their book is rendered obsolete. But then the researchers behind 100 Women: Architects in Practice hope that its title will ultimately sound as strange as a book about 100 left-handed architects, or 100 who happen to have ginger hair. We’re not there yet. In an industry where the gender pay gap has widened in recent years, where all-male panels at conferences are not unusual, and where macho culture still prevails on building sites, a book like this, sadly, still has a place. It serves several purposes. First, recalling Mitt Romney’s unfortunate phrase, it is a literal “binder full of women” – a bulging 300-page directory of female architects from all around the world. The hope is that it will be used by the conveners of competition shortlists, selection panels, awards juries, hiring committees and biennales – to diversify their male-dominated lists. It is for the headhunters who claim women never apply, for the clients who say they just can’t find …
