Sexism linked to social ills for men and women, finds largest cross-cultural study of its kind

Feminism is facing a backlash, with women’s rights being rolled back in many countries and a significant number of people saying feminism has gone far enough or even too far. Yet women still face basic obstacles to education in some countries and are generally paid less than men. They still suffer from male violence and, in some places, face increasing restrictions to reproductive rights. There are even some places where families force midwives to kill their newborn girls. Many women are also fed up with doing both a full-time job and the lion’s share of domestic duties and unpaid caring jobs. It’s easy to wonder whether gender equality is simply impossible, especially as many men inaccurately perceive that gains for women equate losses for men. But there is hope. Our 62-nation psychological study, which is largest of its kind, suggests that gender equality benefits us all and sexism is harmful to everybody – women, men and nations in many surprising ways. As such, we all have an interest in promoting egalitarianism. As our findings show, …

Christian therapist Andrew Bauman quit sexist theology and says you can too

Christian therapist Andrew Bauman quit sexist theology and says you can too

(RNS) — Twenty years ago, Andrew Bauman was part of the problem. The son of a pastor in the Southern Baptist Convention, Bauman studied religion in college and became a pastor. But privately, his struggle with pornography had infused his spiritual beliefs. “My pornography use had mixed in with this misogynistic theology that really made women less-than,” he told RNS in a recent interview. But with that realization came transformation. Bauman traded his pastoral vocation for a career as a licensed mental health counselor and interrogated his religious beliefs until, he said, they were more reflective of Jesus. “As I look at the way Jesus engages women, the way he subverts the patriarchal culture at the time, my faith only grows,” he said. These days, Bauman co-leads the Christian Counseling Center, which specializes in sexual health and trauma, with his wife and co-founder, Christy Bauman. And in his latest book, “Safe Church: How to Guard Against Sexism and Abuse in Christian Communities,” he aims to use his position of influence to invite Christians of all …

Kate Beckinsale reveals years of abuse and sexism on set: ‘Forced to do photoshoot day after miscarriage’

In an Instagram video, the Underworld star said while she didn’t know Lively or Baldoni, she wanted to focus on the “machine that goes into effect when a woman complains about something”. “So this is not Christmassy at all and I do apologise but it is topical and I think it is very important. I’ve been following, as a lot of people have, this situation between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni and I must stress I don’t know either of them, I’ve never met either of them and I wasn’t on the set so I can’t speak to any of that,” Beckinsale said. “But what I will say is what it has highlighted is this machine that goes into effect when a …

Taking on the Tyranny of the Tech Bros

Taking on the Tyranny of the Tech Bros

The glow of the tech bros’ halo is dimming and, in 2025, the computing industry’s sheen of glamor will continue to fade, too. While other STEM fields are making strides in broadening participation in their workforces, year after year, computing, a supposedly innovative field, fails to recruit, retain, and respect women and nonbinary workers. For example, precision questioning, abstraction, aggression, sexism and a disdain for altruism—serving the social good—are a few of the core values driving culture in computing worksites. These values and the ways they are policed via bias, discrimination, and harassment in high-tech companies form the “Bro Code.” The Bro Code perpetuates high tolerance of sexual harassment. It also contributes to the field’s failure to rectify its stark segregation. Only 21 percent of computer programming positions are held by women. Of that 21 percent, only 2 percent are African American, and only 1 percent are Latina. While sorely underrepresented in the field overall, women are disproportionately affected during industry’s downsizing. For example, nearly 70 percent of those laid off in the 2022 tech …

Sexism, Inattention, and Moral Responsibility

Sexism, Inattention, and Moral Responsibility

Consider an all-too-familiar scene. John and Martha are visiting Barry—their adult son—and his family for a holiday. After a delicious dinner he played no role whatsoever in helping to prepare, John promptly seats himself comfortably in an armchair in front of the living room television and ignores what goes on around him. Martha helps clear the table while Barry’s partner Alicia starts in on the dishes. Barry begins to move the children toward bed, helping them to locate their pajamas and brush their teeth. Everyone but John seems to notice and attend to the (seemingly never-ending) work of the household. John contentedly enjoys whatever show or game he has settled on. I think many of us have experienced something like this—the confounding difficulties of navigating gendered asymmetrical expectations of the work of the household. They tend to become even more obvious and prominent when generations gather together. This post is being published at the beginning of November, and I imagine many of us are bracing for time with extended family, time we both treasure and …

Violent pornography viewers show higher rates of sexual aggression, sexism, and psychopathy

Violent pornography viewers show higher rates of sexual aggression, sexism, and psychopathy

A recent study published in Psychology of Violence has shed light on the connection between pornography consumption and sexual aggression among men in the United States. The researchers identified three distinct patterns of pornography use, with one group—those who viewed violent pornography—showing higher rates of sexual aggression, acceptance of harmful myths about rape, hostility toward women, casual sex, psychopathy, and emotional regulation difficulties. The findings help clarify the relationship between different types of pornography and sexual aggression, a topic that has sparked debate in recent years. Concerns about the potential link between pornography and sexual aggression have been a longstanding issue. The rise of internet pornography has given users easy access to violent and degrading content, which some fear may influence harmful behaviors. Previous studies have produced inconsistent results regarding the connection between pornography exposure and sexual aggression, with some research finding strong correlations and others finding only weak or no associations. The inconsistency may be due to the fact that most research has examined pornography use as a single, general category, rather than distinguishing …

5 Shady Signs You’re Being Bullied At Work Because You’re A Woman, Reveals Career Coach | GalTime Writers

By Suzanne Kleinberg Even though the Civil Rights Act (and other state legislation) protects women from workplace bullying and gender discrimination, it still happens.  Whether it’s being passed over for a promotion or getting paid less than a male co-worker in the same job, sad statistics tell us, or being demeaned in the office, it’s possible that women are being demeaned or facing discrimination in the workplace. While the aforementioned scenarios are some of the more common examples of gender discrimination, it’s important to know that this type of inequity is sometimes subtler.  Not only are covert examples of gender discrimination equally unacceptable, but they only signal even more inappropriate behavior in the future. That’s why it’s super important that you protect yourself. Here are five subtle examples of gender discrimination in the workplace you must be aware of. Saying These 3 Little Words Limits Your Self-Love

Saying These 3 Little Words Limits Your Self-Love

We’ve all uttered the phrase, “I feel fat” at some point in our lives, right? Maybe we didn’t think much of it then. After all, it’s a common phrase those around us tend to use. But putting yourself down can lead to harmful behaviors later on. So, why is this phrase so damaging, and how can we learn to connect with our emotions better? Psychologist Dr. Nicole Andreoli explains why saying, “I’m fat” is damaging in our self-love journey. Saying “I Feel Fat” Limits Your Self-Love “The phrase I hear most often is ‘I feel fat’,” says Andreoli, “But this phrase is harmful as it impacts our emotions and what we do next.” We may unconsciously begin to eat less in hopes of getting skinnier. Or we may overeat to become curvier. However, the issue with this phrase extends far beyond the actions we take. Rather, it adds emotion to a word that isn’t supposed to have emotion. “‘Feeling fat’isn’t a thing,” says Andreoli. And you’re pointing the blame in the wrong direction. What you …

Land of the dinosaurs: baseline of sexism overshadows tennis in Madrid | Tennis

Land of the dinosaurs: baseline of sexism overshadows tennis in Madrid | Tennis

When the female tennis players head back to Spain’s capital for the Madrid Open this week, they may be forgiven for letting out a collective groan. A quick glance at the tournament’s history shows a litany of gaffes, accusations of inequality and a full-blown sexism row just last year. Not exactly a highlight of the calendar. It may be a new year but those memories are still fresh. One insider says the tournament – which is a WTA 1000 event, offering one of the most prestigious titles of the year – attracts eyerolls from a number of top female players. “When something happens, and it always does, everyone will be like: ‘Classic Madrid,’” said a source close to the action. Last year was a case in point. The tournament came under fire for employing model ball girls, whose crop tops were replaced by baggier attire for the closing stages of the event. A cake controversy got people talking even more. Two top players celebrated their birthdays at the event, Spain’s golden boy and the men’s …

She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany on Marvel fan sexism, Mark Ruffalo and the trauma of child actors

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free I’m terrified of everything,” Tatiana Maslany admits. The She-Hulk star and I are on the subject of fear because, in her new animated film, Butterfly Tale, she plays a butterfly named Jennifer who is scared of heights. And just like Jennifer, the Canadian actor prefers to face her fears head-on rather than cower behind them. “I tend to push through those nerves and the fear of it, because conquering it and feeling that rush is quite exciting.” She’s at home in Los Angeles, chatting over Zoom from her sun-drenched apartment in trendy Los Feliz. Maslany is about as far away from Hulk rage as you can imagine: she is light, funny, self-deprecating. It’s noon but she looks blurry-eyed and fresh-faced; messy brown hair falls over the hood of a cosy black sweater. The 38-year-old has been acting for most of her life, beginning when she was just 11 years old on Canadian kids’ …
