Sevilla condemn ‘racist insults’ against Acuna and coaching staff

Sevilla’s Argentina defender Marcos Acuna and coaching staff were the target of “racist and xenophobic insults” from fans in the 1-0 LaLiga win at Getafe on Saturday, the club said. Referee Iglesias Villanueva stopped the match in the 68th minute as part of LaLiga’s protocol against racism. “We condemn the racist and xenophobic insults suffered by Marcos Acuna and our coaching staff,” Sevilla said in a statement published on the social media platform X. LaLiga added in a statement: “There is no place for racist or hateful behaviour in sport. LaLiga vehemently condemns any racist act and will continue to work to eradicate this inexcusable behaviour from our sport.” Sevilla coach Quique Sanchez Flores said he had also received xenophobic insults against him as fans called him a “gypsy” in a derogatory manner. “First, I want to say that I am proud of every pore in my veins that can breathe gypsy. But it’s one thing to be a gypsy and another to use it as a racist insult. I find it abhorrent,” said Sanchez. …

Arsenal on verge of Champions League knockout stage after sinking Sevilla | Champions League

Bukayo Saka still had plenty to do. But this was another night when you knew that he would do it. The Arsenal winger was gliding up the right, his team 1-0 up, 64 minutes on the clock and, when he sliced inside, the sudden shift was so explosive that he appeared to slip. Yet almost in the same movement, he caught himself and simply eased away from the Sevilla defender, Adrià Pedrosa. The shot was steered home with the minimum of fuss and Arsenal planted one foot in the last 16 of the Champions League. With the minimum of fuss. Arsenal’s superiority over a desperately poor Sevilla was pronounced. It was clear from a pretty early juncture as to why the Spanish club had won only three matches all season. And the only frustration for Mikel Arteta was that Saka’s half-lap of appreciation came after he was forced off with an injury towards the end. Saka, who had laid on the opening goal for Leandro Trossard, felt something twang and, having tried to play on, …

Just book him, mate. 12 mins: Martinelli rinses the right full-back and gets into the box, he pulls it back to Trossard and/or Rice but neither can get a shot away in a crowded area, allowing Sevilla to clear. 10 mins: Gudelj cleans out Saka for a second time. Key events Show key events only Please turn on JavaScript to use this feature Bayern are so bayern. Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala have put them 3-1 up at Gala, so that one’s over, while in Milan, Inter lead Salzburg 3-1. Email! “I was lucky enough to be in the Éstadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán the other week,” writes Justin Kavanagh, “with the Tartan Army in full voice. The chants were as entertaining as the football. But as Arsenal’s only Scotsman is out on loan (in Spain!) at the moment, I fear the Gunners have no chance of following through on the Scots’ threat to ‘Deep fry your tapas, we’re gonna deep fry your tapas’.” Heh, that would definitely be an improvement. I’m sorry Guardianistas, but it is what it is. It’s not hard to understand why Arteta has done what he’s done: he wants solidity not creativity. And given Lukebakio, Sevilla’s right-winger is left-footed, he’ll be coming inside on Tomiyasu’s stronger side. Otherwise, David Raya remains the favourite keeper despite his weekend error – by …

Ramos gets his moment against Real Madrid but final flourish goes begging | Sevilla

At the end of Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw at Sevilla on Saturday evening, the battle finally over and all the better for the bruises, Sergio Ramos turned to the camera following him across the grass as he hugged old friends and waved to even older ones, and smiled. For the first time since he had left the Santiago Bernabéu, the most successful captain in the history of the most successful club, he had faced his former team, a 37-year-old still playing back where it had all begun, and he had come this close to doing the most Sergio Ramos thing of all. “I had it,” he said. “I had it, just there. And it got away.” The clock had showed 93.52, Ramos Time on Ramos Day, when Suso curled a ball into the area and from somewhere in the crowd, he rose again. Here it was: another story as unbelievable as it was inevitable, another comic strip made for the comeback of a cartoon character, this absurd action hero of a thousand tall tales, running …

Montiel edges Sevilla to seventh Europa League triumph with win over Roma | Europa League

Sevilla’s empire just will not fall, not even to the Romans. After three long, exhausting hours, the match that seemed to never end, just like their extraordinary dominance of this competition, came down to a single kick. Or so it seemed: instead, at midnight in Budapest it came down to two of them. Gonzalo Montiel, the man who scored the penalty that won his country the World Cup was entrusted with taking the penalty that would win his club their seventh, yes seventh, Europa League. This time he did not score, his shot saved by Roma’s Rui Patrício. But Anthony Taylor, the referee who had given and taken away a penalty for Sevilla during the actual game, which had lasted 147 minutes, was advised by the VAR of an encroachment. And so he gave Montiel another chance, and this time the Argentinian found the net, supporters stream down the stands and onto the pitch. At long last, it was all over. At times it had felt like this would never, ever end. But it did, …
