Iran Sentences Prominent Rapper to Death, Lawyer Says

A dissident rapper has been sentenced to death in Iran after releasing music in support of antigovernment demonstrations that rocked the country in 2022, according to his lawyer, in a case that has prompted global condemnation. The rapper, Toomaj Salehi, 33, was one of the most prominent voices among those arrested over nationwide protests against Iran’s clerical rulers after the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, 22. Human rights organizations have been calling for Mr. Salehi’s release, saying that he has been tortured in prison and warning that he could face execution. Amir Raesian, Mr. Salehi’s lawyer, told the Iranian reformist newspaper Shargh in an article published on Wednesday that a court in the central city of Isfahan had sentenced Mr. Salehi to death and that his client planned to appeal. The office of the U.S. Special Envoy for Iran condemned the sentence, calling it another example of “the regime’s brutal abuse of its own citizens, disregard for human rights, and fear of the democratic change the Iranian people seek.” Mr. Salehi was initially …

Man Gets 4 Death Sentences for Kidnapping, Rape and Murder of 5-Year-Old Georgia Girl

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) — A man who kidnapped, raped and killed a 5-year-old Georgia girl has been given four death sentences for the crime. Russell County Circuit Court Judge David Johnson handed down the sentence Monday against Jeremy Williams who murdered, raped and brutalized Kamarie Holland in 2021, news outlets reported. Holland’s mother told police that when she woke up at 5:50 a.m. on Dec. 13, 2021, her daughter was gone and the front door of their Columbus, Georgia, home was open, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told reporters. The girl’s body was found late that night at an abandoned home in nearby Phenix City, Alabama where Williams once lived. A jury found him guilty Friday of four counts of capital murder, among other charges. Living in Columbus at the time of the murder, Williams raped and strangled Holland after offering her mother $2,500 for Holland to perform oral sex on him, according to testimony given in his trial. Video evidence shown to jurors captured officers finding Holland’s body and of him sexually assaulting …

Judges to consider softer sentences for ‘deprived’ criminals who misuse alcohol and drugs | UK | News

Judges to consider softer sentences for ‘deprived’ criminals who misuse alcohol and drugs | UK | News

British Judges have been told to consider handing out more lenient sentences for convicted offenders from “deprived” or “difficult” backgrounds. The Sentencing Council, the official body charged with setting guidelines for judges and magistrates, has identified “mitigating” factors for the first time. These factors relate to various disadvantages that courts should take into account before passing sentences. The new guidelines on “difficult and/or deprived background or personal circumstance” include poverty, low educational attainment, discrimination and insecure accommodation. The council’s guidelines came into effect on Monday, despite warnings from Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, who argued the guidance was “patronising” and “inaccurate”. He added that it risked making poor schooling and poverty excuses for criminals to break the law. Concerns were also raised during the consultation phase that the new sentencing guidelines could mean better-off, middle class offenders from secure households are “unfairly disadvantaged” by being slapped with harsher penalties for the same offence. It was also noted that many people from deprived backgrounds do not become offenders. The Blue Collar Conservatives, a group …

French court sentences ‘Tinder rapist’ to 18 years in prison

French court sentences ‘Tinder rapist’ to 18 years in prison

A French court on Friday, March 29, jailed a man for 18 years for raping and sexually assaulting several women he had lured on dating apps and social media to take their pictures. Salim Berrada, a 38-year-old former photographer from Morocco, was found guilty of 12 rapes and three sexual assaults and will be obliged to leave France in the “Tinder rapist” case, named after the popular dating app. He was charged with raping or sexually assaulting 17 women, but he was acquitted of rape for two alleged victims because of a lack of evidence and the benefit of the doubt. Berrada remained emotionless as the verdict was read out while his victims were heard breathing sighs of relief as the presiding judge read out their names one by one. When the hearing was declared over, several of the women stood up to applaud, shout “thank you” and hug each other after the two-week trial. ‘Extremely dangerous’ Prosecutors had requested 19 years’ jail for Berrada, saying he invited women he met online in 2015 and …

11 Argentines Given Life Sentences for Dictatorship-Era Abuses

11 Argentines Given Life Sentences for Dictatorship-Era Abuses

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina —  Judges overseeing a high-profile human rights trial in Argentina convicted 11 former officials of crimes against humanity on Tuesday, in the first case to focus on the former military dictatorship’s overlooked practice of committing sexual violence against transgender women. The trial at the court in La Plata, a southern suburb of the capital, spanned nearly four years and added new details and insight to previously chronicled atrocities, deepening the nation’s understanding of its traumatic history. Transgender plaintiffs took the witness stand for the first time in a series of chilling hearings that put a spotlight both on the suffering of the transgender community and on the widespread tactic of sexual violence under the right-wing dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. Human rights groups estimate that 30,000 people suspected of opposing the military government were abducted, systematically tortured in clandestine detention centers and “disappeared” during the time. In the highly anticipated verdict, 10 defendants were sentenced to life in prison and one to 25 years in prison for their roles …

Brooke Kinsella calls for longer sentences for domestic killers | Politics | News

Former EastEnders star Brooke Kinsella is urging the government to close a loophole that sees shorter sentences for murderers who use a weapon that was already at the scene. Kinsella, whose brother was stabbed to death, has already succesfully campaigner for harsher prison terms for knife murderers. She is now urging the government to look at the loophole that is robbing hundreds of families of justice when their loved ones are murdered at home. The government now says it is looking into removing a ten-year discrepancy in murder sentencing that experts have referred to it as one of the most significant “remaining open sores” within our justice system. Currently, a killer who murders their victim with a knife “taken to the scene with intent” will have a minimum sentenced of 25 years. The sentence was increased following a campaign from Ben Kinsella’s family after the 16-year-old was killed in north London in 2008 by three strangers. However, “Ben’s Law” does not include domestic killers who use weapons found at the scene of their crime. Starting …

DeSantis signs bills expanding prison sentences for undocumented migrants | US immigration

Florida’s governor signed bills Friday that increase the prison and jail sentences for immigrants who are living in the United States illegally if they are convicted of driving without a license or committing felonies. Ron DeSantis is a frequent critic of the Biden administration over its handling of the Mexican border, sending Florida law enforcement agents and national guard members to Texas. The Republican governor, who ended his attempt for his party’s presidential nomination last month, has also flown immigrants who entered Texas illegally to Massachusetts and California. “We do not tolerate illegal immigration, let alone lawlessness committed by illegal aliens who shouldn’t be here in the first place. The bills I signed [on Friday] further enhance Florida’s capabilities to uphold the law,” DeSantis said. The driver’s license bill increases the maximum sentence for anyone convicted of driving without a license twice or more from 60 days in jail to a year. This also applies to US citizens and immigrants in the country legally – but in Florida, undocumented people are barred from obtaining a …

High Court sentences ex-NSF to 7 days’ jail for abusing police powers in attempt to get free sex

High Court sentences ex-NSF to 7 days’ jail for abusing police powers in attempt to get free sex

SINGAPORE: While serving his national service (NS) with the Singapore Police Force, Fahd Siddiqui showed his warrant card to a social escort and threatened to report her to the police unless she provided him with free sexual services. Fahd, who was off-duty at the time, attempted the same thing with two other escorts a few days later. For his actions, the 21-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to reformative training for at least six months last September. However, he filed an appeal seeking probation. In a turn of events, a High Court judge instead decided to sentence him to a jail term of seven days. In written grounds of decision released on Wednesday (Mar 13), Justice Tay Yong Kwang ruled that while probation was unsuitable for Fahd, he did not need to be placed in a “rigorous and structured” environment for rehabilitation. Fahd was assessed to have a low risk of reoffending, had “positive achievements” in school and NS, and had “begun serious efforts to better himself” with the help of his family, the judge said. Reformative …
