Boy Scouts’ Art Collection Heads to Auction Amid Sex Abuse Bankruptcy

The Boy Scouts of America is auctioning off the entirety of its 321-piece art collection, which includes works by Norman Rockwell, Walt Disney, and J.C. Leyendecker, and is valued at around $59 million, to fund compensation for sex-abuse survivors as part of a bankruptcy settlement, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Heritage Auctions will begin the sale in November with an initial group of 25 pieces, including five Rockwell paintings like Homecoming (1961) and To Keep Myself Physically Strong (1964) and Leyendecker’s Weapons for Liberty (1917). The Boy Scouts Of America Is Changing Its Name To Something More Gender-Neutral

The Boy Scouts Of America Is Changing Its Name To Something More Gender-Neutral

To celebrate its 115th anniversary, the infamous Boy Scouts Of America organization rebranded its name for the first time. As announced in a press release on May 7, their new name, “Scouting America,” is a gender-neutral take on their age-old phrasing that’s intended to serve as a statement of inclusivity. “Though our name will be new, our mission remains unchanged: we are committed to teaching young people to be Prepared. For Life,” Roger A. Krone, who recently took over as president and chief executive officer of Scouting America, announced in the release. “This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in Scouting.” Whether from progressive pressures or something else entirely, the Scouts’ new name has sparked inevitable controversy — from parents and advocates on both sides of the aisle. RELATED: Gender Fluidity Makes Perfect Sense To My Six-Year-Old The Boy Scouts of America have announced they’re changing their name to ‘Scouting America’ to promote inclusivity. While it’s not outwardly mentioned in the release itself, many speculate the name …

Scouting for teachers: DfE’s latest recruitment plan

Scouting for teachers: DfE’s latest recruitment plan

More from this theme Recent articles Scouts will develop “teaching skills” as part of attaining their badges under a new government scheme to boost flagging recruitment by “inspiring the next generation of teachers”. The Scout Association has won a contract worth up to £129,000 over three years to provide 40,000 ‘explorers’ – those aged 14 to 18-years-old – with the “skills and knowledge they need to consider pursuing a career in teaching”.  The Department for Education will work with the Scouts to “create age-appropriate activities that inspire young people to consider a career in teaching by linking to relevant badges and awards”. The department clarified there are currently no plans for a teaching badge. The contact will also include engaging with the organisation’s 120,000 adult volunteers to “raise awareness of teaching as a potential career choice”. ‘Elevate teaching status’ The policy is part of the department’s Get into Teaching “candidate pipeline strategy” which aims to “elevate the status” of the profession and “drive motivation and relevancy for new audiences who have not yet considered it as a career”. …

In Gaza, scouts’ community-building and survival skills are a new lifeline | Israel-Gaza war

In Gaza, scouts’ community-building and survival skills are a new lifeline | Israel-Gaza war

Sahar Abu Zeid was perhaps an unlikely member of the Gaza City branch of the Palestinian Scout Association. She first got involved in 2017, aged 25, shortly after finishing an accounting degree, and quickly fell in love with the outdoor lifestyle and sense of community the organisation provided. Before the new war between Hamas and Israel, scouting was one of the only affordable and accessible recreational outlets in the isolated Palestinian territory, she said. Now, the practical and teamwork skills Abu Zeid learned are being put to use in previously unimaginable circumstances. “Fire-starting, outdoor cooking, setting up tents, knotwork, improvisation using basic materials … these are all skills we are practising and teaching now in Gaza’s displaced communities,” she said in a phone call from Rafah, to where more than half of the strip’s population of 2.3 million has been displaced. The Palestinian Scout Association is one of several youth-oriented organisations that have stepped up to help Gaza’s desperate population cope with life in makeshift shelters in winter conditions, the collapse of the healthcare system …

Video shows man stealing cash from Girl Scouts as they sell cookies at Texas Walmart

Fort Worth Police are asking for help identifying the person they say stole cash from Girl Scouts earlier this month. According to a post on X, formerly Twitter, Fort Worth Police shared a video they said showed the theft. In the video, a man is seen walking out of the Walmart store on the 9500 block of Clifford Street at about 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, and grabbing a bag from behind the table before sprinting into the parking lot. Police said the bag contained the Girl Scout’s cash earnings for her cookie sales that day. More from NBC Dallas-Fort Worth The theft allegedly occurred at the entrance to the store with about a half dozen shoppers around including the Girl Scout and an adult chaperone. In the same thread on X, police shared a close-up photo of the man. Anyone with information about the man’s identity is asked to call Detective C. Magallon at 817-392-4837. Source link

Commentary: Stop pressuring Girl Scouts to be ‘cookie bosses’

Commentary: Stop pressuring Girl Scouts to be ‘cookie bosses’

I am not a cookie hater. Honest. Back in 2005, I even wrote an editorial defending Cookie Monster’s right to gobble as many treats as he wanted, whether or not he ate vegetables and fruits beforehand. The Girl Scouts are great, too. My girlhood memories of Troop 10 are entirely fond, and it was thrilling to see my granddaughter sign up as well a couple of years ago. That was when I learned, though, that the relationship between Girl Scouts and cookies had changed. Cookie sales were no longer the pleasant, low-key experience of my childhood, when I would ask neighbors if they would like to buy a box or two and looked forward to my family’s purchase of a couple of boxes of Thin Mints — never enough for my greedy taste buds. Like so many other kids’ activities, cookie sales have gone high-pressure. Families are encouraged to commit to taking on hundreds of boxes to sell (I called it a phenomenal year if I sold 35 boxes). They are expected to pay the …

Sea scouts and sun worshippers: summer in Southend – in pictures | Art and design

Stardust, Southend-on-Sea, 2022 ‘A lot of the photographic work I often make has an element of gaining access to make the pictures, whether I’m photographing young bullfighters in Spain, Lowriding in the US, or shooting skinheads in the UK. It’s been refreshing to be able to pick up my camera and head out of my front door any time that I fancy taking pictures’ Source link
