Payoneer scoops up Skuad, Robinhood’s strong Q2, and X is making progress on payments

Welcome to TechCrunch Fintech! This week, we’re looking at Payoneer’s $61 million acquisition of Skuad, Robinhood and Dave’s second-quarter results, X’s progress on its payments and more. To get a roundup of TechCrunch’s biggest and most important fintech stories delivered to your inbox every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. PT, subscribe here. The big story Last week, I got the scoop on publicly traded fintech Payoneer acquiring Singaporean startup Skuad for $61 million in cash, with the potential to pay up to $81 million. This was a pretty fast exit for Skuad founder Sundeep Sahi, who launched the company in 2019 with the aim of simplifying international hiring and had raised $19 million in venture funding. Both Payoneer and Skuad are geared toward SMBs that operate internationally, particularly in emerging markets. Notably, rather than build out the tech itself, Payoneer decided to acquire Skuad and integrate its payroll and contract management products into its own offering. Analysis of the week A couple of publicly traded fintechs posted strong results last week. Robinhood beat its second-quarter earnings …

In the latest episode of A Right Royal Podcast, aptly titled A Right Royal Scoop, and which you can listen to below, hosts Andrea Caamano and Emmy Griffiths, alongside HELLO!’s royal editor Emily Nash, talk to Sam McAlister, the trained barrister and former Newsnight producer and guest booker who played an instrumental role in making the infamous interview with the Duke of York happen back in 2019. LISTEN: Sam McAlister reveals all about Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview During the lengthy chat, Sam reveals the reason she decided to write her book, Scoops: The BBC’s most shocking interviews from Steven Seagal to Prince Andrew, in the first place, and why she never consulted the palace or sought their permission. “No, I didn’t,” she admits when asked if she reached out to the palace. “And the reason being because I’m an ex-lawyer, right? So, this was …

Bluesky scoops up the developer of popular third-party app, Graysky

Bluesky scoops up the developer of popular third-party app, Graysky

Decentralized Twitter/X rival Bluesky is adding to its ranks by scooping up a member of its developer community. London-based software engineer Samuel Newman, who built the well-received third-party Bluesky client, Graysky, is joining the startup, where he will now help develop Bluesky’s official app along with the rest of the frontend team. Given his change in position, the future of the Graysky app is uncertain. Newman says he will continue to keep the app alive and maintained for the time being, but will no longer add any “ambitious new features,” as he’ll be putting his efforts into “making the official app the best it can be.” However, he’s also accepting inquiries from other developers who may be interested in taking over the Graysky app, which could be a promising venture for someone if Bluesky ever scales to become a sizable competitor to Twitter/X, Threads, and Mastodon. Since launching publicly last month after an extended private beta, Bluesky now has 5.18 million registered users, roughly half of which are actively posting on the platform. What made …

Brits urged to check Lottery tickets now after one lucky winner scoops £15m jackpot | UK | News

Brits have been urged to check their lottery tickets after one winner scooped the jackpot but is yet to claim the prize. One lucky ticket holder scored Saturday’s ‘Must Be Won’ £15million jackpot after matching all six numbers. Two others matched five numbers and the bonus ball – making them eligible for a £1million prize. The winning Lotto numbers were: 2, 20, 34, 40, 48 and 59 as well as the bonus ball six. But the winner of the huge £15million jackpot is yet to claim their prize and has until August 29 to claim it. Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor at The National Lottery, said: “Brilliant news, one lucky ticket-holder has won tonight’s incredible £15,000,000 ‘Must Be Won’ Lotto jackpot! “What an exciting start to the month! Players are urged to check their tickets and to give us a call to claim tonight’s exciting jackpot prize. “By playing any National Lottery game, players generate £30,000,000 each week for National Lottery-funded projects. “This money helps fund projects across the nation, with over 685,000 grants – …

PagerDuty scoops up incident management startup Jeli.io

PagerDuty scoops up incident management startup Jeli.io

PagerDuty announced this afternoon that it intends to acquire Jeli.io, an early stage incident management startup. The companies did not share the price. Jeli was founded in 2019 by Nora Jones, a chaos engineering veteran, who had previously worked at Netflix and Slack. Jones went to work building a company that could help customers figure out what happened when things go wrong with an emphasis on surfacing insights to help the team learn from the incident and know how to react better in the future. The product includes an incident response bot that works inside of Slack. By answering several questions, you can begin responding to an incident, opening a Jira ticket as needed, and sending the incident report to the appropriate Slack channels to put it in front of the right people. It’s a set of tools that should come in handy for PagerDuty, which helps customers process issues including incident management, AIOps, automation and customer service. The goal is to provide a range of services from resolving an incident internally to dealing externally …

TechCrunch staff from our various coverage hubs around the world — New York, Austin, London, Los Angeles, China — descended on San Francisco this past week for Disrupt 2023. What a wild time! Startup founders were EVERYWHERE; so were investors. Even Shaquille O’Neal was there. My personal highlights included my interviews with Redwood Materials founder and CEO JB Straubel (it covered a lot of ground including maintaining a startup mentality) and Cruise co-founder and CEO Kyle Vogt. The interview with Vogt was particularly illuminating. • The company has surpassed 5 million miles of driverless rides • Vogt asked at what point does it still make sense to have human-driven cars in cities? He said Cruise would not actively lobby for …
