The 50-year-old, who played Pam Beesly on the much-loved NBC sitcom The Office, said publicly earlier this month that she was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. During an appearance on Today, Fischer said she was diagnosed last October and first spoke to her husband, Lee Kirk, about the news. One of the first friends she told was Applegate. Fischer explained: “I called her, and she answered the phone, and she said, ‘Which one is it?’ And I said, ‘It’s breast cancer.’ And she said, ‘I effing knew it.’ “She’s salty. That’s because the ocean surrounding his ship is too salty. Our bodies can’t process the salt in seawater, and drinking it would actually dehydrate you further. You could drink the whole ocean and still be thirsty. All of Earth’s oceans, and all bodies of water connected to them, are salty — the result of millions of years of mineral runoff carried by rivers to the sea. However, this map shows a considerable and consistent variation in salinity levels across the world’s marine domains. Why the variation? Evaporation makes oceans and seas saltier, adding fresh water has the reverse effect. Salty foods are making people sick − in part by poisoning their microbiomes

People have been using salt since the dawn of civilization to process, preserve and enhance foods. In ancient Rome, salt was so central to commerce that soldiers were paid their “salarium,” or salaries, in salt, for instance. Salt’s value was in part as a food preservative, keeping unwanted microbes at bay while allowing desired ones to grow. It was this remarkable ability to regulate bacterial growth that likely helped spark the development of fermented foods ranging from sauerkraut to salami, olives to bread, cheese to kimchi. Today, salt has become ubiquitous and highly concentrated in increasingly processed diets. The evidence has mounted that too much salt – specifically the sodium chloride added to preserve and enhance the flavor of many highly processed foods – is making people sick. It can cause high blood pressure and contribute to heart attacks and stroke. It is also associated with an increased risk of developing stomach and colon cancer, Ménière’s disease, osteoporosis and obesity. How might a substance previously thought worth its weight in gold have transformed into something …

‘The air tasted of salty joy, fat seals basking nearby’: readers’ favourite coastal walks in UK and Europe | Walking holidays

Winning tip: Walks, wildlife and wine in Portugal The Fisherman’s Trail in south Portugal is magical. We started from Porto Covo and ended in Lagos, walking 140 miles in 12 days, staying overnight in rustic villages, cobblestoned towns and surfer spots. Those short of time can walk a smaller section of the trail. The walk has breathtaking views, rugged cliffs, wild beaches with crystal-clear waters, pine forests, vineyards, and meadows of wild flowers. Lots of wildlife can be spotted – lizards, storks, cormorants and countless other birds – and the wine and seafood in the restaurants along the way is a treat.Miana Golden dunes, north Wales Dyfi Estuary, Aberdovey. Amble along the sand or scramble up into the dunes to the sight of wheeling kites and the song of the skylark. Enjoy the views across the water to …
