Up on the roof: the homespun art of rural Punjab – in pictures | Art and design

When Mumbai-based photographer Rajesh Vora travelled to Punjab state in 2014, he was struck by the enormous cartoonish sculptures that adorned rooftops across the region’s rural villages. Known as “showpieces”, the artworks double as water tanks and are part of a custom beginning in the 1970s, wherein Punjabi citizens who had immigrated to other parts of the world erected them on top of the homes they’d kept in their native country as a symbol of prosperity. “I was in awe of their grandiosity, elaborate ornamentation and emotional exuberance,” says Vora, who has spent the past few years travelling to more than 150 villages to capture rooftops embellished with everything from aeroplanes to footballers. Everyday Baroque, a collection of these images on display at the Arles festival of photography, tells the story of how “these icons of aspiration are often entwined with the personal histories of their owners”. ‘On every roof something is possible’: how sponge cities could change the way we handle rain | Environment

You might visit Amsterdam for its canals, and who could blame you, really. But the truly interesting waterways aren’t under your feet – they’re above your head. Beautiful green roofs have popped up all over the world: specially selected plants growing on structures designed to manage the extra weight of biomass. Amsterdam has taken that one step further with blue-green roofs, specially designed to capture rainwater. One project, the resilience network of smart, innovative, climate-adaptive rooftops (Resilio), has covered more than 9,000 sq metres (100,000 sq ft) of Amsterdam’s roofs, including 8,000 sq metres on social housing complexes. Citywide, the blue-green roof coverage is even bigger, estimated at more than 45,000 sq metres. The “sponge city” concept is becoming increasingly popular. Planners deploy more green spaces that soak up downpours that are getting heavier as the world warms. That simultaneously reduces flooding and recharges the underlying layer of absorbent rock, which can then be tapped into in times of need. Whereas cities used to be designed to divert rainwater away as quickly as possible, increasingly, …

NASA hide caption toggle caption NASA In March 2021, mission controllers in Houston used the Canadarm2 robotic arm to release an external pallet packed with old nickel-hydrogen batteries from the International Space Station. Three years later, part of that assembly struck a house in Naples, Fla. NASA Alejandro Otero was out of town on vacation last month when his son called from their house in Naples, Fla., to tell him something shocking and incredible. His son, 19, had been home alone when he heard an extremely loud crash — and realized it came from inside the house. “When he called me to give me the news, he asked us to make sure we were sitting down to hear when he had to tell us,” Otero told NPR. “He wasn’t even sure how to tell me …

NASA Admits Space Station Junk Crashed Through Man’s Roof

Oops. Space Dump Last month, a mysterious, two pound object crashed through the roof of Alejandro Otero’s home in Naples, Florida — narrowly missing his son, who was sleeping two rooms away. While experts suspected at the time that the piece may have originated from the International Space Station, NASA has now officially confirmed that the cylindrical piece of metal alloy once belonged to the aging orbital outpost. The space agency said that the object was part of a support barrier that was used to mount batteries onto a cargo pallet, which was eventually dumped by the ISS. “The hardware was expected to fully burn up during entry through Earth’s atmosphere on March 8, 2024,” NASA said in a statement. “However, a piece of hardware survived and impacted a home in Naples, Florida.” Bullseye The incident highlights a growing problem with space junk, ranging from nuts and bolts to used-up rocket boosters and cluttering the Earth’s orbit. Many of these objects eventually reenter the Earth’s atmosphere, with some of them partially surviving the blistering journey. In …

‘A roof over our people’s heads’: the Indigenous US tribe building hempcrete homes | US news

‘A roof over our people’s heads’: the Indigenous US tribe building hempcrete homes | US news

When Earl Pendleton first heard about building houses out of hemp more than a decade ago, it seemed like a far-fetched idea. To start, it was still illegal to grow hemp – the non-psychoactive strain of Cannabis sativa – in the US. Importing it from overseas was prohibitively expensive. But Pendleton, a member of the Lower Sioux Indian Community, was intrigued by early research that showed hemp could be transformed into non-toxic construction materials that allow for faster build times and result in low-carbon, energy-efficient houses. Which was exactly what he saw his tribe needed at the time. Roughly half of the tribal nation’s enrolled members – about 1,120 people – are currently in need of housing. With his encouragement, the community started experimenting with hemp as a housing construction material – also known as hempcrete – back in 2016, even before it was decriminalized in the US. This month, the tribal nation is set to open the first vertically integrated hempcrete facility in the nation, complete with its own growing operation. When the Lower …

NASA Recovers Debris That Crashed Through Florida Man’s Roof

“It almost hit my son. He was two rooms over and heard it all.” Space Junkie A sizable cylindrical object crashed through the roof of Alexandro Otero’s home in Naples, Florida — and experts believe it may have originated from the International Space Station. While NASA scientists have since recovered the debris and are currently analyzing it, Ars Technica reports, we still don’t have confirmation that the 2-pound object came from space. But given the evidence, there’s a decent chance it once belonged to the aging orbital outpost. Pictures shared by Otero on X-formerly-Twitter show the carnage, with the object punching through wood and drywall with ease. “It was a tremendous sound,” Otero recalled in an interview with local CBS-affiliated news station WINK. “It almost hit my son. He was two rooms over and heard it all.” Hello. Looks like one of those pieces missed Ft Myers and landed in my house in Naples. Tore through the roof and went thru 2 floors. Almost his my son. Can you please assist with getting NASA to …

Passenger says fellow flyers ‘bounced off the roof’ when plane dove during flight to New Zealand

A passenger aboard a flight from Australia and New Zealand described fellow passengers being thrown from their seats hitting the roof when the plane suddenly plunged, before safely landing at Auckland Airport. At least 50 people were injured Monday after the LATAM Airlines plane experienced a “strong shake,” according to the Chilean airline. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landed as scheduled and was set to continue to Santiago, Chile, The Associated Press reported. “The plane, unannounced, just dropped. I mean it dropped unlike anything I’ve ever experienced on any kind of minor turbulence, and people were thrown out of their seats, hit the top of the roof of the plane, thrown down the aisles,” Brian Jokat, a passenger, told ABC News in Australia. “Some of the roof panels were broken from people being thrown up and knocking through the plastic roof panels in the aisle ways. And there was blood coming from several people’s heads,” he said. A number of passengers weren’t wearing seatbelts when the flight suddenly dropped. Jokat said he was one of the …

Owner of famous house with 25ft shark sticking out of the roof booted off Airbnb

The owner of a world-famous house with a 25ft shark sticking out of the roof has been banned from renting it out on Airbnb. The quirky property – widely known as the Headington Shark House – has been available as a short-term let on the booking site for the last five years – going for as much as £1k a night during peak times. But its owner Magnus Hanson-Heine, who inherited it from his father and its creator Bill Heine, has now been ordered to remove it – as he doesn’t have the right planning permission. Bill installed the shark statue on top of his property in secret without official permission in 1986 – beginning a six-year planning row with Oxford City Council. Oxford City Council refused retrospective planning permission two years later before the then Secretary of State for the Environment, Michael Heseltine, intervened to allow it to stay. Source link

My libido has shot through the roof since I stopped breastfeeding | Life and style

My libido has shot through the roof since I stopped breastfeeding | Life and style

Since I stopped breastfeeding four months ago, I have been aroused to the point where it is distracting me from parenting. I am happily married with three preschoolers. My husband and I have a trusting and adventurous sex life, but I find myself having to masturbate at least twice a day so that I can think about something other than sex for a few hours. The scenarios can be uncomfortable: for example, I’ve begun fantasising about women and other men. I am hoping that this problem is not uncommon and perhaps it is due to my hormones readjusting. You are correct, this is not uncommon and such a libido surge is normal as hormones readjust. You may have to plan your day to allow for it, but I hope you will try not to feel ashamed of these natural feelings. On the contrary, perhaps you could start to enjoy them. And this may be the time to remind your husband of the lusty woman you really are; the chances are that he will be delighted. …
