The killing of at least 45 Palestinians in a humanitarian zone near Rafah has caused anger that reaches far beyond the Middle East. And yet Israel’s offensive is expected to continue, with several Israeli tanks spotted in the centre of Rafah on Tuesday, witnesses told Reuters news agency. It comes after the international criminal court sought arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and defence minister Yoav Gallant, along with three senior Hamas leaders – all for alleged war crimes. Separately, the international court of justice demanded that Israel cease its assault on Rafah, and, for a few days last week, there seemed to be signs that Israel was refraining from an all-out assault. The US-based Institute for the Study of War had reported that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were using “less airpower and artillery, and fewer, smaller bombs”, with soldiers clearing “urban areas on foot”. The Las Culturistas Culture Awards, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, is moving to the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn for its third annual show satirizing and celebrating moments in culture that could only be dreamt up on their podcast. The ceremony, which will take place June 15, typically consists of 100 categories brainstormed by Yang and Rogers, with some mainstays including record of the year and the Cate Blanchett award for good acting. The “fake awards show” is meant to poke fun at the big awards shows of the year and has included musical performances, celebrity appearances and video acceptance speeches from the likes of Blanchett (a winner in her own category) and Taylor Swift (a two-time winner including in the category of Best Taylor Swift).  As for whether Swift could be a participant in this year’s ceremony, Rogers and Yang are leaving the option open.   “If she wants to send in a video that would be great. Despite the pressure coming from the Biden administration, there is little sign of the Netanyahu government changing its plan to destroy Hamas – whatever the cost in death and destruction in Gaza. The immediate risk is to the city of Rafah, where Israel is launching intensive airstrikes and planning a full ground offensive. Rafah and its immediate surroundings are sheltering about 1.5 million people, many of them in flimsy tents, while food and clean water are scarce and medical support is minimal. Warning of a ground assault, the UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, described it as “terrifying, given the prospect that an extremely high number of civilians, again mostly children and women, will likely be killed and injured”. On Monday, at least 67 Palestinians were killed in airstrikes on Rafah, which coincided with an Israeli mission to free two hostages. Jazz pianist and com­pos­er Charles Cor­nell is not alone in his con­tempt for the sort of dumb­ed down musi­cal fare typ­i­cal of children’s pro­gram­ming. The late John­ny Cos­ta, Mis­ter Rogers’ Neigh­bor­hood’s long-time musi­cal direc­tor and a self-described “real jazzer,” was of like mind: Chil­dren have ears, and they’re peo­ple, and they can hear good music as well as any­body else. So I start­ed right from the begin­ning play­ing for them as I would for any adults. The show not only hooked many young view­ers on jazz, it may have plant­ed a sub­lim­i­nal pref­er­ence for live jazz. None of the show’s music was pre­re­cord­ed. Instead, Cos­ta attend­ed every tap­ing, pro­vid­ing live accom­pa­ni­ment just off cam­era with per­cus­sion­ist Bob­by Raw­sthorne and bassist Carl McVick­er. Allan Rogers, the former Labour MP for Rhondda who has died aged 91, had, through the circumstances of his childhood, a passionate understanding of the difficult lives of many of his constituents in the valleys of south Wales. The youngest of 12 children of a disabled former miner who was unable to find work for over a decade after he was injured in a colliery accident, Rogers sought ways to improve the prospects for those he represented throughout his life – first as a councillor in local government, then as a member of the European parliament for five years and subsequently, from 1983 until 2001, in the House of Commons. There, Rogers made an impact as a lively, enterprising and assertive MP. He was genial and popular on the Labour benches, but he was too much of a straight-talking class warrior for many in other parties.
